AIM: Apical periodontitis (AP) is the chronic inflammation of the periradicular tissues in response to root canal infection. Whilst AP has been linked with systemic inflammation and noncommunicable diseases, its potential association with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is unknown. We aimed to evaluate the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels as surrogate markers of hepatic injury, and the systemic inflammatory burden in otherwise healthy individuals with and without AP diagnosis.
METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional study. Individuals with AP (n =

BACKGROUND: Early implant placement with simultaneous contour augmentation is documented with short- and medium-term studies. The long-term stability of contour augmentation is uncertain.
METHODS: In this prospective, cross-sectional study, 41 patients with an implant-borne single crown were examined twice, in 2006 and 2010. Clinical, radiologic, and esthetic parameters were assessed at both examinations. In addition, a cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) image was obtained during the second examination to assess the dimensions of the facial bone wall.
RESULTS: All 41 implants demonstrated

Heat shock protein (HSP) 27 is a member of the small HSP family that plays a part in the regulation of epithelial cell growth and differentiation, wound healing, apoptosis and cell protection against inflammatory cytotoxicity mediators. Thus the expression of HSP27 was investigated immunohistochemically in periapical granulomas with epithelial rests of Malassez and in radicular cysts. Anti-HSP27 mouse monoclonal antibody and peroxidase-labeled streptavidin-biotin standard technique were used to study the expression of HSP27. Proliferating epithelial cell rests, and islands of epithelium and ep

INTRODUCTION: Biodentine is a new bioactive cement that is similar to the widely used mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). It has dentin-like mechanical properties, which may be considered a suitable material for clinical indications of dentin-pulp complex regeneration such as direct pulp capping. The purpose of the present study was to compare the response of the pulp-dentin complex in human teeth after direct capping with this new tricalcium silicate-based cement with that of MTA.
METHODS: Pulps in 28 caries-free maxillary and mandibular permanent intact human molars scheduled for extraction f

Close root proximity between the maxillary central incisors presents a problem in the surgical management of a maxillary palatal expansion. During the surgical fracture of this interdental area, the possibility exists for a separation to occur between the root surface and the bone. If this does occur, it is paramount that the gingival attachment remain intact. Asymmetric separation places more stress on the mesial gingival attachment because of the anatomy of the gingival fiber apparatus. Gingival detachment results in epithelial downgrowth in an apical direction, which in turn prevents bone a

This study was conducted to determine the biological effects on the periradicular tissues of Nd:YAG laser endodontic treatment in dogs. Twelve vital teeth (24 roots) of two mongrel dogs were randomly selected to receive conventional or Nd:YAG laser endodontic treatment. Endodontic therapy was performed on the second, third, or fourth, right or left, mandibular premolars. The teeth were evaluated radiographically and histologically at 1, 15, and 30 days after endodontic treatment. The remaining teeth served as untreated controls. The results of this study revealed laser treatment causes cell ne

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a rare hereditary connective tissue disorder. This pathology is characterized by disruption of biosynthesis of Type I collagen, and production of limited amount of defective and imperfect collagens. This causes decrease in bone mass of human body, bones become fragile and brittle, resulting in unreasonable multiple fractures. Reportedly, number of patients with OI ranges between 32-38 in Georgia. However, exact number of patients, including children and their parents, is unknown. Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI; DGI) and skeletal malocclusion occupy special place

Tooth-bearing structures are commonly involved in the spread of various odontogenic lesions. Radicular and dentigerous cysts are among the most common odontogenic cysts, exhibiting significant variations in size and morphology within the jawbones. On the other hand, the influence of dental caries, periodontal diseases, and periapical lesions extends beyond tooth-bearing bone and also affects adjacent anatomical structures, especially the maxillary sinuses. In addition to untreated odontogenic lesions, treatment-related complications in the posterior maxilla may also disturb the sinus environme

AIM: In this study, we investigated the systemic implications of chronic apical periodontitis (CAP). CAP may contribute to the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) progression through the gut microbiota and its metabolites, which are related to the degree of fibrosis.
METHODOLOGY: Sixteen 7-week-old male apolipoprotein E knockout (apoE-/-) mice were randomly divided into two groups: the CAP and Con groups. A CAP model was established by sealing the first- and second-maxillary molars with bacterium-containing cotton balls. Apical lesions were evaluated by micro-CT. Histological evaluations

This paper is a report on 25 autotransplantations of third molars with complete root formations. The study consists of 23 patients in whom 25 third molars were transplanted. The mean age was 29.6 years (range 20-54). In nine cases third molars were directly transplanted into the new socket. In 11 cases the sockets were widened and made deeper with a bur. In five cases the recipient beds were made by splitting osteotomy of the alveolar region. The transplanted third molars were stabilized with silk sutures, resin, wire splint or circumferential wiring for 1-6 weeks. Two-three weeks after transp

BACKGROUND: Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FLCOD) is a begin fibro-osseous lesion occurring in the tooth-bearing regions of the jaws and is characterized by replacement of normal bone with fibrous connective tissue and cementum-like mineralized material. Most patients are asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally during radiographic examinations, and the condition may be misdiagnosed because of overlapping imaging features with other jaw lesions. Because the disease is usually asymptomatic and exhibits imaging features that overlap with those of several odontogenic and inflammatory lesion

BACKGROUND: Furcation defects in periodontitis present treatment challenges due to complex anatomy. While guided tissue regeneration aids regeneration, periosteal isolation limits osteoblast contribution. The marginal periosteal membrane (MPM) serves as a biological barrier, potentially enhancing regeneration. Hence, the study aims to evaluate the application of a vascularized MPM in the treatment of mandibular Grade II furcation defects with and without bone graft in terms of defect depth reduction.

INTRODUCTION: Biological characterization of root canal sealers is important as it assesses the ability of the root canal sealer to exert antimicrobial properties thus avoiding treatment failures caused by microbial challenge and also assess the cytotoxic effect on the periapical tissues. Assessment of the biological testing of root canal sealers necessitates the sterilisation of the materials prior to evaluation. This study aims to analyse the influence of various sterilisation techniques conducted prior to biological testing on the microstructure and surface properties of endodontic sealers.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic infection is one of the common infectious diseases in oral and maxillofacial head and neck regions. Clinically, if early odontogenic infections such as acute periapical periodontitis, alveolar abscess, and pericoronitis of wisdom teeth are not treated timely, effectively and correctly, the infected tissue may spread up to the skull and brain, down to the thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity and other areas through the natural potential fascial space in the oral and maxillofacial head and neck. Severe multi-space infections are formed and can eventually lead to life-threate
