Evaluation of corneal morphology, pupillometry, and ocular surface parameters in Fabry disease patients: correlation with plasma Lyso-Gb3 levels.

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder characterized by systemic glycosphingolipid accumulation that may disrupt endothelial and neuronal integrity, leading to autonomic and ocular involvement. Non-invasive ocular imaging may offer early diagnostic biomarkers reflecting systemic disease activity. This study aimed to evaluate autonomic, ocular surface, and corneal morphological parameters in patients with Fabry disease (FD) and explore their correlations with plasma Lyso-Gb3 concentrations. METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional study, 25 eyes of genetically

Young age at school entry and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder-related symptoms during primary school: results of a prospective cohort study conducted at German Rudolf Steiner Schools.

OBJECTIVES: Young age at school entry (ASE) for students has been related to their impaired mental health in higher grades. To avoid the negative health consequences of young ASE, preschool examinations and individual school entry deferral for young children are routinely performed by some school authorities. We aimed to investigate whether ASE was associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-related symptoms in pupils attending schools using a selective school enrolment procedure. DESIGN: Prospective open cohort study with baseline assessments at school entry and two follo

[School Entrance Examination for Lateral Entrants - What Can and What Should They be Able to Do? A Discussion Contribution Based on the Data from the Health Authority Frankfurt am Main 2006-2016].

QUESTION: The medical investigation of school beginners is one of the essential tasks of the child and youth services of the health authorities. While in all federal states in Germany, the examination of all school beginners is legally clearly stipulated, the situation for "lateral entry", that is, children of school age, who are moving from a foreign country to a local German community and attending school there, is not clearly regulated in the respective school laws. This article presents the experiences of the lateral entry investigations in Frankfurt am Main. METHOD: All children of schoo

[The revised newest IC³D classification of corneal dystrophies].

PURPOSE: This report suggests how corneal dystrophies (CDs) should be diagnosed at the slit lamp and specifies the new IC(3)D classification of CDs in 2015 which incorporates new information. METHODS: IC(3)D reviewed all peer-reviewed articles on CDs 2008 to 6/2014. Corneal dystrophy templates and anatomic classifications were updated. RESULTS: To detect landmarks for correct classification of CDs, opacity patterns and opacity units are determined at the slit lamp. Opacity patterns are described as (1) horizontal extension, (2) vertical extension ("depth") and clarity of the (3) cornea in be

Phenotyping Neurodisability in Hospital Records in England: A National Birth Cohort Using Linked Administrative Data.

BACKGROUND: Children with neurodisability often have complex healthcare and educational needs. Evidence from linked administrative health and education data could improve joint working between services. OBJECTIVE: To develop a diagnostic code list to identify neurodisability in hospital admission records; to assess the representativeness of this phenotype by characterising children with hospital-recorded neurodisability and their outcomes. METHODS: We developed a national cohort of singletons born in England between 2003 and 2009, including a nested cohort of children enrolled in primary sch

Endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in eyes with small pupils managed by sector iridectomy and polypropylene suture closure.

Two patients with small pupils developed endophthalmitis following cataract surgery during which the small pupils were managed by sector iridectomy and closed with a polypropylene suture. Prior studies have reported that implantation of intraocular lenses (IOLs) with haptics made of polypropylene is associated with a higher risk of postoperative endophthalmitis than the use of IOLs with polymethylmethacrylate haptics. Endophthalmitis in the two patients reported herein was managed successfully without removal of the polypropylene suture; vision returned to 20/60 in one patient and 20/30 in the

Clinical, Radiologic, and Legal Significance of "Extensor Response" in Posttraumatic Coma.

OBJECTIVE: The timely detection of neurologic deterioration can be critical for the survival of a neurosurgical patient following head injury. Because little reliable evidence is available on the prognostic value of the clinical sign "extensor response" in comatose posttraumatic patients, we investigated the correlation of this clinical sign with outcome and with early radiologic findings from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: This retrospective analysis of prospectively obtained data included 157 patients who had remained in a coma for a minimum of 24 hours after traumatic brain inj
