A comparative study of patient and provider priorities for cesarean delivery anesthesia care.

INTRODUCTION: Patient priorities for anesthesia during a cesarean delivery are not well defined. Previous studies have explored patient preferences for cesarean delivery anesthesia but have not evaluated patient-centered endpoints unrelated to the physical experience which are known to be important to patients' birth experiences, such as being treated with respect, communication, and emotional support. The purpose of this study was to compare patients' and providers' priorities for cesarean delivery anesthesia care. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional quantitative survey study included

Not All Temperature Control Is Equal: High-Quality Temperature Control Is Associated With Improved Outcomes Following Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Temperature control for survivors of cardiac arrest is a complex bundled intervention with poorly defined optimal parameters. We defined high-quality temperature control initiation and evaluated the association between quality and clinical outcomes. METHODS: In this retrospective single academic center study between January 1, 2014, and July 19, 2024, consecutive out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients treated with temperature control were identified. Patients were assigned a temperature control quality score (range 0 to 6) based on the time from hospital arrival to temperat

Mild hypothermia increases survival from severe pressure-controlled hemorrhagic shock in rats.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies, mild hypothermia (34 degrees C) during uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock (HS) increased survival. Hypothermia also increased mean arterial pressure (MAP), which may have contributed to its beneficial effect. We hypothesized that hypothermia would improve survival in a pressure-controlled HS model and that prolonged hypothermia would further improve survival. METHODS: Thirty rats were prepared under light nitrous oxide/halothane anesthesia with spontaneous breathing. The rats underwent HS with an initial blood withdrawal of 2 mL/100 g over 10 minutes and pressure-

Development and implementation of a therapeutic hypothermia protocol.

Two randomized controlled trials published in 2002 demonstrated that mild hypothermia induced after resuscitation from cardiac arrest decreased mortality and improved neurologic outcomes. Although therapeutic hypothermia is relatively easy to implement, side effects and special nursing considerations are associated with this therapy. This article discusses the process of developing and implementing a therapeutic hypothermia protocol. Patients resuscitated after cardiac arrest are cooled to 32 degrees C-34 degrees C for 12-24 hrs. Discussion highlights include patient selection, physiologic eff

[Investigation of Molecular Differences in Plasmodium spp. Isolates Obtained from Malaria Patients].

Malaria continues to pose a serious threat to more than half of the world’s population each year. The Plasmodium parasites that cause disease are not limited to humans alone; they have a wide range of infections that extend to reptiles, birds, mammals and other vertebrates. Plasmodium species have extraordinary genetic flexibility that allows them to adapt to changes in the environment, giving them the potential to rapidly develop resistance to therapeutics such as antimalarials and to change host specificity. Parasites multiply dynamically in the erythrocytes of vertebrate hosts and during th

Physiology of exercise in the cold.

Recreational and job requirements have increased the incidence in which humans exercise in cold environment. Understanding the physiological responses while exposed to cold entails knowledge of how exercise and cold interact on metabolic, cardiopulmonary, muscle and thermal aspects of human performance. Where possible, distinction are made between responses in cold air and cold water. While there is no consensus for diets most appropriate for working cold exposures, the evidence is strong that adequate amounts of carbohydrate are necessary. Carbohydrate loading appears to be efficacious, as it

Appearance of 5-hydroxytryptamine and an unidentified pharmacologically active lipid acid in effluent from perfused cerebral ventricles.

1. In cats anaesthetized with intraperitoneal pentobarbitone sodium, three regions of the cerebral ventricles, the third ventricle, the inferior or the anterior horn, were perfused with artificial c.s.f. and the effluent was tested on the fundus strip of the rat's stomach.2. Effluent from all three regions contracted the fundus strip. The contractions were due to at least two substances as revealed by treatment of the strip with 2-bromolysergic acid diethylamide (BOL). The contractions that were sensitive to BOL are attributed to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) whereas the BOL resistant contraction

[Non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae Bacteremia: First Case in Türkiye].

Vibrio cholerae is a gastrointestinal pathogen that causes waterborne epidemics. More than 200 serogroups of V.cholerae have been identified to date. In general, 01 or 0139 strains of V.cholerae that produce cholera toxin cause acute, rapidly progressive watery diarrhea while non-O1/non-O139 strains that do not produce cholera toxin (non-toxigenic) can cause sporadic gastroenteritis, wound infection and septicemia. Although V.cholerae non-O1/O139 (NOVC) strains are not considered to have sufficient clinical significance due to their lack of toxin production and failure to cause epidemics, an i

[Miliary Pulmonary Tuberculosis After Intravesical BCG Instillation in a Patient with High-Grade Bladder Cancer].

Intravesical administration of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine is used in the treatment of superficial bladder cancer. In clinical practice, intravesical BCG immunotherapy after transurethral tumor resection is a highly effective treatment option in preventing tumor recurrence and progression in medium and high risk superficial bladder tumors. Since patients are given live tuberculosis (TB) bacillus, serious side effects such as pneumonia, sepsis and even death can be seen. Lung involvement occurs in less than 1% of patients and most commonly presents as interstitial pneumonia or miliar
