Symptoms, Audiometric and Vestibular Laboratory Findings, and Imaging in a Concurrent Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome and Vestibular Schwannoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Dizziness is a common complaint that can arise from multiple systems in the body. Objective vestibular tests are used to understand the underlying function of the vestibular system and whether or not it may be contributing to the dizziness symptoms experienced by the patient. Even when comprehensive case history is consistent with an otologic etiology, audiometric and vestibular tests are ordered to objectively characterize inner ear function to help further refine the differential diagnoses and aid in guiding treatment options. Few reports in the literature describe audiometric an

Sleep in Different Types of Dizziness.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances and dizziness are frequently comorbid, yet the specific sleep profiles across different vestibular disorders remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to investigate distinct sleep signatures in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular migraine (VM), and persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) compared to healthy controls. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 90 participants: 24 healthy controls, 21 with BPPV, 23 with PPPD, and 22 with VM. Sleep was assessed using a multimodal approach: 14-day actigraphy, a s

Does peripheral vestibular disorder increase the risk of attempted suicide: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the risk of attempted suicide in the population of patients diagnosed with peripheral vestibular disorders (PVD). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study. We extracted data on patients diagnosed with PVD (72,569 study patients) and a 3:1 ratio of propensity-score matched comparison patients without PVD (217,707 patients) from Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2010. The claims records of sampled patients were tracked for a one-year period from their index date to identify claims showing a diagnosis of suicide attempt. Cox pro

Complications in sinus lifting procedures: Classification and management.

Open and closed sinus lifting procedures are predictable methods to augment the bone needed for appropriate implant placement in the posterior maxilla in cases where available bone is limited. However, these techniques may give rise to complications and associated comorbidities. In the case of open sinus lifting, perforation of the Schneiderian membrane during osteotomy is the most common complication, with an incidence rate of around 20%-25%. Apart from those complications associated with oral surgery in general (such as swelling or hematoma), there are specific complications of open sinus li

Bone Mineral Density in Patients Suffering from Ménière's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have reported an association between reduced bone mineral density and the occurrence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, balance impairment, and saccular dysfunction. Furthermore, the results of recent animal studies have raised the possibility that vestibular dysfunction could affect bone remodeling and bone mass. The goal of the study was to compare bone mineral density of patients suffering from definite Ménière's disease to that of a matched control group. METHODS: We conducted a case-control cross-sectional study in a tertiary referral center. The stud

Dizziness and Imbalance in the Elderly: Age-related Decline in the Vestibular System.

Dizziness and imbalance are amongst the most common complaints in older people, and are a growing public health concern since they put older people at a significantly higher risk of falling. Although the causes of dizziness in older people are multifactorial, peripheral vestibular dysfunction is one of the most frequent causes. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most frequent form of vestibular dysfunction in the elderly, followed by Meniere's disease. Every factor associated with the maintenance of postural stability deteriorates during aging. Age-related deterioration of peripheral

Ultrastructural changes in otoconia of osteoporotic rats.

The etiology of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) remains obscure in many cases and women are affected more often than men. A recent prospective study, performed in women >50 years of age suffering from recurrent BPPV, showed associated osteopenia or osteoporosis in a large percentage of these patients. These results suggested the possible relationship between recurrent BPPV and a decreased fixation of calcium in bone in women >50 years. To test this hypothesis, an experimental study was performed in adult female rats. Utricular otoconia of female rats in which osteopenia/osteoporosi

Blood Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Peripheral Causes of Vestibular Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral vestibular syndromes (PVS) encompass disorders such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular neuritis, and Ménière's disease, presenting with vertiginous symptoms. Existing diagnostic approaches rely on clinical and vestibular function tests but have overlapping presentations and invasive investigations. Blood-based biomarkers may offer a minimally invasive diagnostic alternative. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize current evidence on blood-based biomarkers to identify PVS compared with controls. METHODS: A literature sea

Long-term course and relapses of vestibular and balance disorders.

The long-term course and the frequency of relapses for various peripheral vestibular disorders and somatoform phobic postural vertigo are discussed with respect to the clinically most important questions for thus afflicted patients. This review is mainly based on our own long-term follow-up studies and takes into consideration the most relevant literature. The following syndromes are discussed in detail. Vestibular neuritis: the recovery rate of peripheral vestibular function lies between 40-63% depending on early-onset treatment with corticosteroids; the recurrence rate within 10 years is 2%.

Dysautonomia and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) in the ENT Clinic: Differentiating Orthostatic Dizziness From Vestibular Migraine and Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD).

One of the most common complaints in ENT clinics is dizziness. Although most cases are caused by vestibular neuritis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a significant number of patients experience non-vestibular dizziness. One non-vestibular cause is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which presents with symptoms similar to vestibular migraine (VM) and persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD). Dizziness from POTS is related to dysautonomia rather than the vestibular system. In otolaryngology, understanding the autonomic nature of non-vestibular dizziness is i
