[Can curcumin prevent the formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofi lm on the surface of tympanostomy tubes?].

Formation of bacterial biofilm on the surface of tympanostomy tubes are held responsible in the pathogenesis of post-tympanostomy tube otorrhea. To prevent the formation of biofilm, various methods were employed and varying degrees of success have been achieved. In some recent studies curcumin, which is the fenolic form of Curcuma longa (turmeric), has been pointed out to have inhibitory effects on virulence factors of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the administration of curcumin is able to prevent the formation of P.aeruginosa biofilm on the surface o

Menopause: a review on the role of oxygen stress and favorable effects of dietary antioxidants.

Menopause is often accompanied by hot flashes and degenerative processes such as arteriosclerosis and atrophic changes of the skin that suggest an acceleration of aging triggered by estrogen lack. Therefore, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been considered the most suitable treatment for the above symptoms and processes. However, because of the possible serious side effects of HRT (especially the increased risk of thrombo-embolic accidents and breast cancer) there is a growing demand for alternative treatments of the symptoms and pathological processes associated with menopause. In agreem

Toxic Feedback Loop Involving Iron, Reactive Oxygen Species, α-Synuclein and Neuromelanin in Parkinson's Disease and Intervention with Turmeric.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a movement disorder associated with severe loss of mainly dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Pathological hallmarks include Lewy bodies, and loss of neuromelanin, due to degeneration of neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons. Despite being described over 200 years ago, the etiology of PD remains unknown. Here, we highlight the roles of reactive oxygen species (ROS), iron, alpha synuclein (α-syn) and neuromelanin in a toxic feedback loop culminating in neuronal death and spread of the disease. Dopaminergic neurons are particularly vulnerable due to d

Curcumin, a polyphenolic antioxidant, attenuates chronic fatigue syndrome in murine water immersion stress model.

Chronic fatigue syndrome, infection and oxidative stress are interrelated in epidemiological case studies. However, data demonstrating scientific validation of epidemiological claims regarding effectiveness of nutritional supplements for chronic fatigue syndrome are lacking. This study is designed to evaluate the effect of natural polyphenol, curcumin, in a mouse model of immunologically induced fatigue, where purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and Brucella abortus (BA) antigens were used as immunogens. The assessment of chronic fatigue syndrome was based on chronic water-immersion stress test

Engineered Turmeric-Derived Nanovesicles for Ulcerative Colitis Therapy by Attenuating Oxidative Stress and Alleviating Inflammation.

Inflammation and oxidative stress are important features of traumatic ulcerative colitis (UC). Turmeric has been used as a dietary and functional ingredient for its potent anti-inflammatory effects in UC therapy. However, its practical effectiveness is hindered by limited reactive oxygen species (ROS) elimination properties. To address this, we constructed a unique treatment agent by growing cerium oxide (CeO2) nanocrystals on the membranes of turmeric-derived nanovesicles (TNVs), named as TNV-Ce. The resulted TNV-Ce could suppress inflammation and exhibit exceptional ROS-scavenging activity,

Outbreak of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis associated with Aeromonas hydrophila in Pangasianodon hypophthalmus: The role of turmeric oil in enhancing immunity and inducing resistance against co-infection.

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a ciliated parasite causing ichthyophthiriasis (white spot disease) in freshwater fishes, results in significant economic loss to the aquaculture sector. One of the important predisposing factors for ichthyophthiriasis is low water temperature (i.e., below 20°C), which affects the health and makes freshwater fishes more susceptible to parasitic infections. During ichthyophthiriasis, fishes are stressed and acute immune reactions are compromised, which enables the aquatic bacterial pathogens to simultaneously infect the host and increase the severity of disease.
