Pulpitis in primary teeth, a condition caused by presence of bacteria, is highly prevalent worldwide. The use of biocompatibility materials with anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and regenerative properties is critical for prognosis of this endodontic disease. This study aimed to identify expression of human β defensin 4 (HBD4) in stem cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) and characterize the effects of HBD4 on SHED. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to detect HBD4 expression in SHED and the effect of HBD4 on inflammatory factors in lipopolysaccharid

BACKGROUND: Patients with ruptured saccular intracranial aneurysms have excess long-term mortality due to cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases compared with general population. Chronic inflammation is detected in ruptured intracranial aneurysms, abdominal aortic aneurysms and coronary artery plaques. Bacterial infections have been suggested to have a role in the aetiology of atherosclerosis. Bacteria have been detected both in abdominal and coronary arteries but their presence in intracranial aneurysms has not yet been properly studied.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this preliminary study was

BACKGROUND: A fat-enriched diet favors the development of gram negative bacteria in the intestine which is linked to the occurrence of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Interestingly, some pathogenic gram negative bacteria are commonly associated with the development of periodontitis which, like T2D, is characterized by a chronic low-grade inflammation. Moreover, estrogens have been shown to regulate glucose homeostasis via an LPS receptor dependent immune-modulation. In this study, we evaluated whether diet-induced metabolic disease would favor the development of periodontitis in mice. In addition, the

Intra-amniotic infection and inflammation are major causes of preterm birth (PTB). However, intra-amniotic inflammation is often detected in the absence of infection. This may partly be due to the culturing methods employed in hospital laboratories, which are unable to detect the uncultivated species. In this study, intra-amniotic microbial infections associated with PTB were examined by both culture and 16S rRNA-based culture-independent methods and were corroborated by the presence of intra-amniotic inflammation. Amniotic fluid (AF) specimens from 46 pregnancies complicated by PTB and 16 asy

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease in Down's syndrome (DS) is generally characterized by a high degree of bone loss. Bone loss of 5 mm or more is observed in 70% of these subjects. Among DS subjects, considerable differences in disease progression occur. So far, no studies have been conducted in which specific properties of the subgingival microflora have been related to the condition observed.
AIMS: To investigate (1) the subgingival microflora in DS subjects and other mentally retarded (control) individuals which were matched to the utmost and (2) to investigate the subgingival microflora of a

Oral focal infection, a concept neglected for several decades, is a subject of controversy. Recent progress in classification and identification of oral microorganisms has renewed interest in focal infection. The aim of this study was to use phenotypic and genetic methods to trace microorganisms released into the bloodstream during and after endodontic treatment back to their presumed source--the root canal. Microbiological samples were taken from the root canals of 26 patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis of single-rooted teeth. The blood of the patients was drawn during and 10 minu

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with outcomes critically dependent on timely diagnosis, accurate risk stratification, and individualized treatment. Traditional markers such as CEA, KRAS/NRAS, BRAF, and MSI status, while foundational, are insufficient to address the full complexity of CRC biology. Over the past decade, a new generation of biomarkers has emerged spanning liquid biopsy, stool-based methylation, genomics, epigenomics, immune profiling, microbiome analysis, radiomics, patient-derived organoids, and multiomics integrat

BACKGROUND: The Western diet contributes to the onset and progression of gingivitis. In contrast, an anti-inflammatory low-carbohydrate diet (AILCD) has been proposed as a dietary recommendation to improve gingival health. Although a few published studies have investigated the influence of an anti-inflammatory diet on gingivitis in individuals of normal weight, this study aimed to evaluate the association between an AILCD and gingivitis in women with obesity.
METHODS: Twenty-three women with obesity and gingivitis participated in the 2-month study. Clinical parameters, including plaque index

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), comprising ~90% of oral malignancies, remains a major global health burden with rising incidence despite declining tobacco use. While tobacco and alcohol are classic dominant risk factors, a distinct subgroup of nonsmoking, nondrinking (NSND) patients is increasingly recognized, accounting for 15-35% of OSCC cases in many cohorts, particularly in developed countries. This emerging epidemic shows striking demographic patterns: strong female predominance (often 65-77% of cases), bimodal age distribution with peaks in young adults (<45 years) and elderly indiv

Originating in the mucosal lining of the mouth, oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy of the head and neck regions. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial, involving environmental exposures, genetic susceptibility, and lifestyle-related risk factors. Increasing evidence indicates that oral microbial dysbiosis contributes to the initiation and progression of OSCC. Under healthy conditions, the oral cavity harbors a diverse and functionally balanced microbial ecosystem that maintains mucosal integrity, supports immune homeostasis, and prevents colonization by pathogenic species.

BACKGROUND: Oncogenic intracellular bacteria, including Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Fusobacterium nucleatum, have emerged as significant contributors to cervical carcinogenesis. Despite growing interest in microbial oncology, the molecular epidemiological landscape and phylogeographic distribution of these pathogens in Northern China remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, co-infection patterns, genotypic diversity, and spatial phylogeographic clustering of oncogenic intracellular bacteria among cervical cancer patients across five provi

Background/Objectives: Periodontal disease (PD) is a chronic inflammatory condition caused by dysbiosis of the oral microbiome. PD is linked to systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, which associate it with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This systematic review explores the molecular and microbial mechanisms through which periodontal pathogens, including "Red Complex" bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola) and Fusobacterium nucleatum, influence cardiovascular health via inflammatory pathways, immune modulation, and microbial dissemination. Background: Periodontitis and oral dysbiosis have been linked to systemic inflammation and carcinogenesis. Among oral pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) are biologically plausible contributors to colorectal cancer (CRC) via inflammatory and immunomodulatory pathways. However, the magnitude and consistency of these associations remain uncertain. Objective: To evaluate whether periodontitis and key oral pathogens are associated with CRC risk and prognosis through a systematic review, meta-analysis, and trial sequential analysis (TSA). Methods: We searched P
