Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) variations in relationship with childhood maltreatment in patients with anorexia nervosa: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious mental illness. It is frequently accompanied by a history of childhood maltreatment (CM) that may constitute a specific ecophenotype in patients with eating disorders necessitating special assessment and management. This retrospective study tested whether in patients with AN, CM-related chronic stress may manifest through low-grade inflammation reflected by an increase in white blood cell ratios (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, NLR, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio). METHODS: Participants (N = 206) were enrolled at an e

Central correlates of placebo effects in nausea differ between men and women.

INTRODUCTION: Despite growing evidence validating placebo effects in nausea, little is known about the underlying cortical mechanisms in women and men. Therefore, the present study examined sex differences and electroencephalography (EEG) characteristics of the placebo effect on nausea. METHODS: On 2 consecutive days, 90 healthy subjects (45 females) were exposed to a nauseating visual stimulus. Nausea was continuously rated on an 11-point numeric rating scale, and 32 EEG channels were recorded. On day 2, subjects were randomly allocated to either placebo treatment or no treatment: the placeb

Localised increase in regional cerebral perfusion in patients with visual snow syndrome: a pseudo-continuous arterial spin labelling study.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using arterial spin labelling (ASL) in patients with visual snow syndrome (VSS), in order to understand more about the underlying neurobiology of the condition, which remains mostly unknown. METHODS: We performed an MRI study in which whole-brain maps of rCBF were obtained using pseudo-continuous ASL. Twenty-four patients with VSS and an equal number of gender and age-matched healthy volunteers took part in the study. All subjects were examined with both a visual paradigm consisting of a visual-snow like stimul

Assessment of the abuse potential of methamnetamine in rodents: a behavioral pharmacology study.

RATIONALE: Methamnetamine (MNA; PAL-1046) is a new psychoactive substance that acts as a full biogenic amine transporter (BAT) substrate. BAT substrates promote neurotransmitter release from the nerve terminal and can be abused as stimulants. However, scientific information on the abuse potential of methamnetamine is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the abuse liability of methamnetamine. METHODS: The effective dose range of methamnetamine was determined using a climbing behavior test. The rewarding effect and reinforcing effect of the test compound were evaluated in mice by conditioned place

Resting-state functional connectivity predicts recovery from visually induced motion sickness.

Movies depicting certain types of motion often provoke uncomfortable symptoms similar to motion sickness, termed visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). VIMS generally evolves slowly during the viewing of a motion stimulus and, when the stimulus is removed, the recovery proceeds over time. Recent human neuroimaging studies have provided new insights into the neural bases of the evolution of VIMS. In contrast, no study has investigated the neural correlates of the recovery from VIMS. Study of the recovery process is critical for the development of a way to promote recovery and could provide fu

Forebrain projection neurons target functionally diverse respiratory control areas in the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata.

Eupnea is generated by neural circuits located in the ponto-medullary brainstem, but can be modulated by higher brain inputs which contribute to volitional control of breathing and the expression of orofacial behaviors, such as vocalization, sniffing, coughing, and swallowing. Surprisingly, the anatomical organization of descending inputs that connect the forebrain with the brainstem respiratory network remains poorly defined. We hypothesized that descending forebrain projections target multiple distributed respiratory control nuclei across the neuroaxis. To test our hypothesis, we made discre

Synergistic but separable sensory changes in postural tachycardia syndrome and chronic migraine.

PURPOSE: Up to 90% of patients with postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) report headaches, and comorbid migraine headaches are common. Given this, pathophysiological interaction is possible, which may reveal key aspects of disease expression and treatment opportunities. We hypothesized that PoTS subjects-both with and without migraine-would show features of central sensitization, including allodynia and photophobia. METHODS: Eighty participants were evaluated, including 30 PoTS, 30 chronic migraine (CM), and 20 non-headache healthy controls (NH), using tilt table testing, psychophysical asses

Comparative Analysis of Dorsal Root, Nodose and Sympathetic Ganglia for the Development of New Analgesics.

Interoceptive and exteroceptive signals, and the corresponding coordinated control of internal organs and sensory functions, including pain, are received and orchestrated by multiple neurons within the peripheral, central and autonomic nervous systems. A central aim of the present report is to obtain a molecularly informed basis for analgesic drug development aimed at peripheral rather than central targets. We compare three key peripheral ganglia: nodose, sympathetic (superior cervical), and dorsal root ganglia in the rat, and focus on their molecular composition using next-gen RNA-Seq, as wel

The role of the vestibular system in value attribution to positive and negative reinforcers.

Somatic inputs originating from bioregulatory processes can guide cognition and behavior. One such bodily signal, mostly overlooked so far, is represented by visuo-vestibular coupling and its alteration, which in extreme cases may result in motion sickness. We argued that the inherently perturbed interoceptive state that follows can be a powerful determinant of human motivated behavior, resulting in a blunted response to appetitive stimuli and an exaggerated response to noxious ones. We sought to assess such differential impact of visuo-vestibular mismatches on value through a task involving c

Altered cerebellar-insular-parietal-cingular subnetwork in adolescents in the earliest stages of anorexia nervosa: a network-based statistic analysis.

To date, few functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have explored resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) in long-lasting anorexia nervosa (AN) patients via graph analysis. The aim of the present study is to investigate, via a graph approach (i.e., the network-based statistic), RSFC in a sample of adolescents at the earliest stages of AN (i.e., AN duration less than 6 months). Resting-state fMRI data was obtained from 15 treatment-naive female adolescents with AN restrictive type (AN-r) in its earliest stages and 15 age-matched healthy female controls. A network-based statis

Group Qigong for Adolescent Inpatients with Anorexia Nervosa: Incentives and Barriers.

BACKGROUND: Qigong is a mind-body intervention focusing on interoceptive awareness that appears to be a promising approach in anorexia nervosa (AN). In 2008, as part of our multidimensional treatment program for adolescent inpatients with AN, we began a weekly qigong workshop that turned out to be popular among our adolescent patients. Moreover psychiatrists perceived clinical benefits that deserved further exploration. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A qualitative study therefore sought to obtain a deeper understanding of how young patients with severe AN experience qigong and to determine the incenti

Heightened brain response to pain anticipation in high-functioning adults with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is marked by both socio-communicative difficulties and abnormalities in sensory processing. Much of the work on sensory deficits in ASD has focused on tactile sensations and the perceptual aspects of somatosensation, such as encoding of stimulus intensity and location. Although aberrant pain processing has often been noted in clinical observations of patients with ASD, it remains largely uninvestigated. Importantly, the neural mechanism underlying higher order cognitive aspects of pain processing such as pain anticipation also remains unknown. Here we examined bo

Contribution of Group Therapeutic Factors to the Outcome of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Patients with Panic Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Investigating the contribution of therapeutic factors arising from the collective nature or group therapy to treat mental disorders may help therapists maximize the outcome of therapy. Studies about the role of therapeutic factors in cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for panic disorder (PD) patients are still scarce. OBJECTIVES: To identify the therapeutic factors rated as the most useful by patients during CBGT. Also, we aimed to investigate the relationship between patient rating of therapeutic factors and specific stages of CBGT. DESIGN: Non-controlled clinical trial.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for residual depressive symptoms and relapse prophylaxis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The article reviews the recent evidence for mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) for patients with residual depressive symptoms or in remitted patients at increased risk for relapse. RECENT FINDINGS: Randomized controlled trials have shifted focus from comparing MBCT with treatment-as-usual to comparing MBCT against interventions. These studies have provided evidence for the efficacy of MBCT on par with maintenance antidepressant pharmacotherapy and leading to a relative reduction of risk on the order of 30-40%. Perhaps fuelled by these data, recent efforts have focus

Eating disorders and sense of self: a learning theory conceptualization.

The learning theory view of sense of self is that problems in one's knowledge about the self arise when: (1) caregivers fail to recognize indicators of a child's private emotional and visceral experiences and (2) subsequently fail to offer appropriate labels that discriminate among those experiences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of the process believed to build a sense of self to level of interoceptive awareness (IA) and to risk for eating disorders. One hundred twenty seven undergraduate and graduate students (112 women) completed the Eating Disorders Inventory-3

Eating Disorder Inventory-3, validation in Swedish patients with eating disorders, psychiatric outpatients and a normal control sample.

BACKGROUND: The Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3) is designed to assess eating disorder psychopathology and the associated psychological symptoms. The instrument has been revised and has not yet been validated for Swedish conditions in its current form. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of this inventory and present national norms for Swedish females. METHODS: Data from patients with eating disorders (n = 292), psychiatric outpatients (n = 140) and normal controls (n = 648), all females, were used to study the internal consistency, the discriminati

Abnormal spontaneous neural activity in the anterior insular and anterior cingulate cortices in anxious depression.

OBJECTIVE: Anxious depression is a distinct clinical subtype of major depressive disorder (MDD) characterized by palpitations, somatic complaints, altered interoceptive awareness, high risk of suicide, and poor response to pharmacotherapy. However, the neural mechanisms of anxious depression are still not well understood. In this study we investigated changes in neural oscillation during the resting-state of patients with anxious depression by measuring differences in the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF). METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was acquired i

Development and psychometric evaluation of a brief version of the hyperventilation questionnaire: the HVQ-B.

The fear of arousal sensations characterizes some anxiety disorders and is a core feature of an established risk factor for anxiety and related disorders (i.e. anxiety sensitivity; Taylor, 1999). Anxiety sensitivity (AS) refers to a fear of anxiety-related bodily sensations stemming from beliefs that these have catastrophic consequences. Interoceptive exposure (IE; repeated exposure to feared arousal sensations) has been shown to decrease AS. The 33-item Hyperventilation Questionnaire (HVQ; Rapee & Medoro, 1994) measures state levels of cognitive, affective, and somatic responses to IE and aro

Changes of meningeal excitability mediated by corticotrigeminal networks: a link for the endogenous modulation of migraine pain.

Alterations in cortical excitability are implicated in the pathophysiology of migraine. However, the relationship between cortical spreading depression (CSD) and headache has not been fully elucidated. We aimed to identify the corticofugal networks that directly influence meningeal nociception in the brainstem trigeminocervical complex (Sp5C) of the rat. Cortical areas projecting to the brainstem were first identified by retrograde tracing from Sp5C areas that receive direct meningeal inputs. Anterograde tracers were then injected into these cortical areas to determine the precise pattern of d

The contribution(s) of the insula to speech production: a review of the clinical and functional imaging literature.

Skilled spoken language production requires fast and accurate coordination of up to 100 muscles. A long-standing concept--tracing ultimately back to Paul Broca--assumes posterior parts of the inferior frontal gyrus to support the orchestration of the respective movement sequences prior to innervation of the vocal tract. At variance with this tradition, the insula has more recently been declared the relevant "region for coordinating speech articulation", based upon clinico-neuroradiological correlation studies. However, these findings have been criticized on methodological grounds. A survey of
