Breast cancer is the most frequent malignant neoplasia worldwide. In emergent countries as Mexico, an increase has been shown in frequency and mortality, unfortunately, most cases in advanced loco-regional stages developed in young women. The success of breast screening in mortality reduction has been observed since 1995 in Western Europe and the United States, where as many as 40% mortality reduction has been achieved. Most countries guidelines recommends an annual or biannual mammography for all women >40 years of age. In 2005, FUCAM, a nonlucrative civil foundation in Mexico join with Mexic

Lymphomas involving the nasal and nasopharyngeal region mainly include CD56-positive natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphomas, CD56-negative peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTL), and B-cell lymphomas. Among these, the CD56-positive lymphoma, presumably of an NK/T-cell nature, is frequently seen in Asian, Mexican, and South American patients. NK cells are proposed to be closer developmentally to T cells than to other lymphoid cells, because bipotential common progenitor cells of NK/T-cell lineage have been isolated. In this study, we collected 47 cases of nasal lymphoma and investigated the phenotypic

BACKGROUND: Since the 2018 Food and Drug Administration approval of immunotherapy (IO) for consolidative therapy in stage III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), real-world uptake across racial and socioeconomic groups remains poorly characterized. This study evaluated IO utilization patterns after definitive chemoradiation (CRT) in a diverse national cohort.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out using the National Cancer Database for patients aged ≥18 years diagnosed with stage III NSCLC from 2018 to 2021. Inclusion criteria included receipt of ≥60 Gy of radiation i

BACKGROUND: Racial/ethnic disparities in sleep outcomes may compound cardiovascular health (CVH) risks, particularly among adults with hypertension (HTN). This study examines differences in sleep health across racial/ethnic groups, with a primary focus on adults with HTN.
METHODS: We analyzed NHANES data (2011-2023) for adults aged ≥20 years. Sleep outcomes included daytime sleepiness (2015-2020), sleep duration (2011-2023), and sleep quality (2011-2020). HTN was defined as blood pressure ≥130/80 mmHg, self-reported diagnosis, or antihypertensive use. Regression models assessed associations b

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) emergence in the Americas was driven by Asian-lineage strains, whereas African lineages represent the ancestral form of the virus and remain understudied in terms of transmission potential. Whether genetic differences between viral strains influence their ability to infect and be transmitted by American Aedes aegypti mosquitoes remains unclear. We investigated strain-specific differences in vector competence, host transcriptional responses, and viral genomic variation.
METHODS: Zika virus strains representing Neotropical (Honduras) and Old-World (Senegal) lineage

INTRODUCTION: Pleural mesothelioma (PM) is a rare and aggressive cancer where prognostic assessment is crucial. Traditional prognostic scores such as the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) have limitations, particularly in reflecting contemporary treatments and demographic diversities, while more recent scores often include novel biomarkers, not widely available and validated. Our goal was to create an effective prognostic score for PM using readily available baseline data.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study at two

OBJECTIVE: n-6 and n-3 long-chain PUFA play opposing roles in inflammation, anxiety and nociception, all of which are closely associated with chronic pain. We hypothesised that diets high in n-6 arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6, AA) and low in combined n-3 EPA (C20:5n-3, EPA) and DHA (C22:6n-3, DHA) would be associated with higher odds of painful temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
DESIGN: We analysed baseline data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). Two 24-h dietary recall surveys quantified intake of long-chain n-6 and n-3 PUFA along with their precursors, linoleic

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) remains the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, with early detection crucial for preventing vision loss. However, current risk assessment methods have limited predictive power. Here, we present a multi-trait polygenic probability risk score (PPRS) approach that integrates multiple glaucoma-related traits and leverages functional genomic annotations to enhance POAG prediction across diverse ancestries. We constructed PRSs for POAG, intraocular pressure (IOP), vertical cup-to-disc ratio (VCDR), and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness using

OBJECTIVE: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza virus, and SARS-CoV-2 cause significant morbidity and mortality. Understanding the prevalence of underlying conditions associated with higher risk for severe RSV, influenza, or COVID-19, and demographic trends in multi-morbidity prevalence, may help inform effective interventional strategies against these respiratory infections in high-risk populations.
METHODS: This study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (2017-2018) from a representative sample of US adults (≥20 years).

BACKGROUND: Infertility has emerged as a significant public health concern with implications for population development. Despite its relevance, there has been limited research addressing the association between infertility and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index-derived indicators. This study examined the relationship between infertility and three TyG-related composite indices: TyG-BMI (TyG index combined with body mass index), TyG-WC (TyG index combined with waist circumference), and TyG-WHtR (TyG index combined with waist-to-height ratio).
METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2013-2020 Nationa

UNLABELLED: Approximately 12% of the U.S. population is Hispanic, with the majority residing in urban centers such as Los Angeles. The prevalence of BRCA mutations among high-risk Hispanic families is unknown.
METHODS: One hundred and ten unrelated probands of Hispanic origin, with a personal or family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer, presented for genetic cancer risk assessment, were enrolled in an Institutional Review Board-approved registry and underwent BRCA testing. Haplotype analyses were done if BRCA mutations were observed in two or more unrelated probands.
RESULTS: Mean age

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. Genetic factors contribute to the development of diabetes. Some forms such as the condition called maturity-onset diabetes of the young(MODY) result from mutations in a single gene. Other forms such as type 1 or type 2 diabetes are multifactorial in origin with different combinations of genes together with non-genetic factors contributing to the development of hyperglycemia. MODY has been a good model for studying the genetics and pathophysiolo

A theory-based program that used peer modeling and a network of peer communicators to promote breast and cervical cancer screening was designed and implemented in a barrio of San Antonio with a population of approximately 25,000 adult women. The implementation process was evaluated and documented through field notes, archival documents, content analyses, interviews, surveys, etc. Over a 21-month period, a total of 156 new stories and a network for distribution of more than 80,000 print pieces carried messages about positive role models who were receiving Pap smears and mammograms. A group of 8
