Irrigants for non-surgical root canal treatment in mature permanent teeth.

BACKGROUND: Root canal treatment is carried out on teeth in which irreversible pulpitis has led to necrosis of the dental pulp. As a treatment option it is an alternative to dental extraction. Mechanical preparation and irrigation with antiseptic or antibacterial solutions destroys bacteria and cleans the infected root canal. Irrigants should be effective in deactivating bacteria in the entire root canal space without causing any adverse tissue reactions. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine are commonly used but there is uncertainty as to which solution, concentration or combination

Impact of plasma of argon cleaning treatment on implant abutments in patients with a history of periodontal disease and thin biotype: radiographic results at 24-month follow-up of a RCT.

BACKGROUND: A lack of evidence is present in literature regarding the clinical relevance of micropollution and bacterial contamination present on customized titanium abutments following laboratory stages and steaming cleaning procedures. To preserve abutments from such pollutants, plasma of argon cleaning of customized abutments was advocated. AIM: The aim of this prospective, randomized, match-paired, triple-blinded, controlled, clinical trial is to longitudinally assess radiographical marginal bone-level changes around implants restored according to the platform switching and "one-abutment-

Prevention of infective endocarditis: a review of the American Heart Association guidelines.

Ever since the last American Heart Association (AHA) publication on prevention of infective endocarditis (IE) many medical societies and physicians have questioned the efficacy of prophylaxis in patients that undergo a dental, genitourinary (GU) or gastrointestinal (GI) procedures. In 1997 AHA recognize that most cases of IE were not related to invasive procedures but as a result of arbitrarily occurring bacteremia from routine daily activities as well as recognition of the possibility of IE prophylaxis failure. This assumptions as well as review of numerous published studies over the past two

Evaluation of periapical injection of Ketorolac for management of endodontic pain.

Effective pain management of the endodontic emergency patient is often a problem. Ketorolac tromethamine is the first nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug available for intramuscular injection in the United States. Although its analgesic efficacy is comparable with opiates after intramuscular injection, to date no study has evaluated its efficacy after intraoral periapical injection. Fifty-two endodontic emergency patients were injected (injection routes = intraoral infiltration/intramuscular deltoid) on a double-blind basis with either: (i) placebo/placebo, (ii) 30 mg ketorolac/placebo, (iii)

Incidence of mandibular nutrient canals in hypertensive patients: a radiographic study.

Hypertension, also called a 'silent killer,' is one of the most common medical problems seen in our profession. A prospective study was conducted in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology to determine the incidence of the appearance of nutrient canals in the periapical radiographs of the mandibular anterior region of patients with high blood pressure. A total of 100 patients, between 10-80 years, were examined. After taking a proper history, systemic and oral examinations were done and the findings were recorded under two categories, hypertensive patients and normotensive patients. They

Treatment of endodontic perforations by guided tissue regeneration.

Case reports of mandibular molars with iatrogenic perforations are presented. Such perforations have been treated with internal amalgam repair or by surgical intervention. However, the potential exists for tissue migration and pocket formation. The use of guided tissue regeneration as a barrier for apical migration is beneficial in surgical treatment of perforations. Follow-up examination of perforated teeth treated with resorbable barriers showed successful repair. Results obtained with this technique offer the possibility of a successful repair for an otherwise hopeless complication of endod

Relationship of oral complications to peripheral blood leukocyte and platelet counts in patients receiving cancer chemotherapy.

Patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy often suffer from oral complications as a result of their disease and its treatment. The effects of the chemotherapy on the bone marrow and oral mucosa, coupled with the patient's immunosuppressed state and altered oral microbial flora, predispose these patients to oral mucositis, infection, and hemorrhage. The oral mucosa appears to mirror the effects of the chemotherapy on the bone marrow, as there appears to be a direct relationship between the changing peripheral blood counts and the status of the oral mucosa.
