White matter microstructure and atypical visual orienting in 7-month-olds at risk for autism.

OBJECTIVE The authors sought to determine whether specific patterns of oculomotor functioning and visual orienting characterize 7-month-old infants who later meet criteria for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and to identify the neural correlates of these behaviors. METHOD Data were collected from 97 infants, of whom 16 were high-familial-risk infants later classified as having an ASD, 40 were high-familial-risk infants who did not later meet ASD criteria (high-risk negative), and 41 were low-risk infants. All infants underwent an eye-tracking task at a mean age of 7 months and a clinical ass

Symptomatic Carotid Artery Thrombosis in a Patient Recently Recovered From a COVID-19 Infection.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was initially discovered in December 2019 in China and rapidly spread all over the world to become a pandemic. The most common symptoms of a disease are fever, cough, generalized body ache, weakness, dyspnoea, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Among vascular complications of COVID-19, the venous thrombotic complications, like pulmonary embolism and lower limb deep veins thrombosis, are not uncommon. But data about arterial thrombotic complications of COVID-19, especially carotid thrombosi

A Japanese case of Kindler syndrome.

A 25-year-old Japanese woman presented with contracture of the fingers and toes, and difficulty in opening her mouth. Her grandparents are first cousins, but none of the other members of the family are affected. Bulla formation started at birth on areas of the skin that received pressure, and in infancy and early childhood the lesions were limited only to the acral areas. She also had bilateral, incomplete syndactylies involving all web spaces (Fig. 1a). The formation of blisters ceased after the age of 15 years, but a generalized progressive poikiloderma then appeared with accompanying cutane

Graphene oxide scaffolds promote functional improvements mediated by scaffold-invading axons in thoracic transected rats.

Millions of patients and their caretakers live and deal with the devastating consequences of spinal cord injury (SCI) worldwide. Despite outstanding advances in the field to both understand and tackle these pathologies, a cure for SCI patients, with their peculiar characteristics, is still a mirage. One of the most promising therapeutic strategies to date for these patients involves the use of epidural electrical stimulation. In this context, electrically active materials such as graphene and its derivates become particularly interesting. Indeed, solid evidence of their capacity to closely int

Central Pathology in Spasmodic Dysphonia.

INTRODUCTION: Spasmodic dysphonia a voice disorder characterized by loss of voluntary control of vocal fold movements during speech production. The pathophysiology is not well understood, but there have been proposed connections to areas within the brain such as the reticular formation surrounding the tractus solitarius, spinal trigeminal and ambiguus nuclei, inferior olive, and pyramids. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are differences on brain Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with and without gadolinium in patients affected by spasmodic dysphonia compared with those without to determin

The Rostral Zona Incerta: A Subcortical Integrative Hub and Potential Deep Brain Stimulation Target for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The zona incerta (ZI) is involved in mediating survival behaviors and is connected to a wide range of cortical and subcortical structures, including key basal ganglia nuclei. Based on these connections and their links to behavioral modulation, we propose that the ZI is a connectional hub for mediating between top-down and bottom-up control and a possible target for deep brain stimulation for obsessive-compulsive disorder. METHODS: We analyzed the trajectory of cortical fibers to the ZI in nonhuman and human primates based on tracer injections in monkeys and high-resolution diffusi

The ΦCPG1 chlamydiaphage can infect Chlamydia trachomatis and significantly reduce its infectivity.

Recent years have seen a significant increase in rates of persistent, antibiotic-resistant infection of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infections, representing an increasingly serious public health threat. At present there are no effective vaccines or antibodies available to treat CT, prompting the need for novel treatment strategies. One potential solution to this issue is the use of ΦCPG1, a chlamydia-specific lytic phage which has over 90% nucleotide sequence identity with other chlamydiaphages. Previous work has shown the Vp1 capsid protein of ΦCPG1 to exhibit broad inhibitory activity against

Primary Cutaneous Osteosarcoma.

Primary cutaneous osteosarcoma is an exceedingly rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm of the skin which produces bone, osteoid, or chondroid material and does not involve the underlying bone. The most common site for extraskeletal osteosarcoma is in the deep soft tissues of the thigh, upper extremities, and retroperitoneum; however, it may occur anywhere in the body. Involvement of the skin is rare and when it does occur it is more commonly due to metastatic disease rather than a primary malignancy. Only 16 cases of primary cutaneous osteosarcoma have been described in the literature. We report

Processing of vestibular inputs by the medullary lateral tegmental field of conscious cats: implications for generation of motion sickness.

The dorsolateral reticular formation of the caudal medulla, the lateral tegmental field (LTF), participates in generating vomiting. LTF neurons exhibited complex responses to vestibular stimulation in decerebrate cats, indicating that they received converging inputs from a variety of labyrinthine receptors. Such a convergence pattern of vestibular inputs is appropriate for a brain region that participates in generating motion sickness. Since responses of brainstem neurons to vestibular stimulation can differ between decerebrate and conscious animals, the current study examined the effects of w

[Familial hyperekplexia: startle disease. Clinical, electrophysiological and genetic study of a family].

The major form of familial hyperekplexia, a rare autosomal dominant disorder, is characterized by an abnormal startle reaction elicited by auditory and somatosensory stimuli, with transitory stiffness during the neontam period, followed later by falling attacks accompanied by momentary generalized muscular stiffness. Affected neonates occasionally have fatal hypertonia. The minor form is characterized only by an inconstant excessive startle response. We encountered a family in which three females presented with a partial or complete major form of the disease. All our patients were hyperreflexi

Wolff Award 1992. Exteroceptive suppression of temporalis muscle activity in patients with chronic headache and in normal volunteers: methodology, clinical and pathophysiological relevance.

Exteroceptive suppression of temporalis muscle activity was studied in patients with chronic headache and in healthy controls. Among different methods of recording, averaging 10 full-wave rectified EMG responses produces results with acceptable variability and discomfort. The late temporalis exteroceptive suppression period (ES2) is reduced on average in patients with chronic tension-type headache; this finding has been reproduced by several independent laboratories. Mean duration of temporalis ES2 is also diminished, but to a lesser degree, in daily drug abuse headache and, as shown by others

Distribution and partial characterization of immunoreactive prolactin in the rat brain.

Immunoreactive (IR) prolactin was localized immunocytochemically in cell bodies in the mediobasal hypothalamus and in fibers in many regions of the rat brain. The cell bodies were found in the arcuate nuclei and the adjacent areas ventral to the ventromedial nuclei. Fiber projections extended rostrally to and/or through the anterior hypothalamus, preoptic area, nucleus accumbens, septum, diagonal bands of Broca, caudate-putamen, frontal cortex and accessory olfactory bulb; laterally to the amygdala, especially the central nucleus and some parts of the medial nucleus; caudally to and/or through

Differential mossy fiber projections to the dorsal and ventral uvula in the cat.

The brainstem afferents to the uvula were studied by using retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase in the cat. Findings indicate differential afferent projections to the ventral and dorsal uvula. Major sources projecting to the ventral uvula include the caudal parts of the medial and inferior vestibular nuclei, the x- and f-groups of the vestibular nuclei, the dorsal and central parts of the superior vestibular nucleus, the rostral dorsomedial part of the paramedian nucleus of the pontine nuclei, the caudal part of the prepositus hypoglossal nucleus, and the infratrigeminal nucle

Distribution of acetylcholine and catecholamine neurons in the cat brainstem: a choline acetyltransferase and tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemical study.

The distribution of acetylcholine neurons in the brainstem of the cat was studied by choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunohistochemistry and compared to that of catecholamine neurons examined in the same or adjacent sections by tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry. The largest group of ChAT-positive (+) neurons was located in the lateral pontomesencephalic tegmentum within the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus and the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus rostrally and within the parabrachial nuclei and locus coeruleus nucleus more caudally. TH+ neurons were found to be coextensive and i

[Influence of hemisphere lesions on the contralateral blink reflex].

Electrically elicited blink reflexes were investigated in 28 patients with unilateral hemispheral lesion. The reflex evoked by electrical stimulation of the supraorbital nerve contralateral to the side of the hemispheral lesion was absent or depressed in 14 out of 28 cases. The abnormal patterns of the blink reflexes were devided into four different types (Type AB, Type AD, Type EB, and Type AB-EB). The Type AB, recorded in 4 cases, consisted of bilateral absence of late component (R2) when the supraorbital nerve on the non-lesion side was stimulated. In contrast, the reflex responses were alm

Efferent connections of the prelimbic (area 32) and the infralimbic (area 25) cortices: an anterograde tracing study in the cat.

The projections from the caudal part of the medial frontal cortex, encompassing the prelimbic area (PL) and the infralimbic area (IL) (Brodmann's areas 32 and 25, respectively), were studied in the cat with the anterograde autoradiographic tracing technique. The results indicate that the projection fields of IL, in contrast to those of PL, are restricted almost exclusively to limbic structures. Whereas the major thalamic projections from PL reach the mediodorsal, anteromedial, and ventromedial nuclei, the medial part of the lateral posterior nucleus, and the parataenial and reticular nuclei, a

[Clinicophysiological studies of orbicularis oculi reflex in brain stem diseases].

Orbicularis oculi reflex is consisted of two components; one is early reflex response (R1) which is 14.1 +/- 2.2 msec in latency, and the other is late reflex response (R2) that is 35.0 +/- 8.6 msec in latency (mean +/- 2SD). R1 is observed on the ipsilateral side of stimulation and R2 is visible bilaterally on ipsiand contralateral sides of stimulation. Clinically orbicularis oculi reflex can be recorded easily, however, its clinical and physiological significance has not been clearly solved. Orbicularis oculi reflex was tested on patients with the brain stem lesions of various kinds, and the

Altered structural connectivity in epilepsy with myoclonic atonic seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy with myoclonic-atonic seizure (EMAS) is a rare generalized epilepsy in young children associated with various neurodevelopmental and epileptic outcomes. Although conventional brain imaging is usually normal, we previously identified morphometric alterations in the frontal lobes and cerebellum. We here investigated structural connectivity differences between EMAS patients and healthy subjects several years after epilepsy onset and explored their associations with epilepsy severity and cognitive performance. METHODS: Thirteen EMAS patients (4 females, 5-14 years) and 14 matc

Cerebellar projections to the macaque midbrain tegmentum: Possible near response connections.

Since most gaze shifts are to targets that lie at a different distance from the viewer than the current target, gaze changes commonly require a change in the angle between the eyes. As part of this response, lens curvature must also be adjusted with respect to target distance by the ciliary muscle. It has been suggested that projections by the cerebellar fastigial and posterior interposed nuclei to the supraoculomotor area (SOA), which lies immediately dorsal to the oculomotor nucleus and contains near response neurons, support this behavior. However, the SOA also contains motoneurons that sup
