Pharmacology of appetite suppression.

Despite a rising worldwide epidemic of obesity there is currently only a very small number of anti-obesity drugs available to manage the problem. Large numbers of differing pharmacological agents reliably produce a reduction in food intake when administered acutely to animals, and when administered chronically they result in a significant decrease in body mass. Behavioural analysis of drug-induced anorexia in animals demonstrates that various compounds profoundly effect feeding behaviour in differing ways. This indicates the variety of mechanisms by which pharmacological agents can induce chan

Learning the Capacity to Feel Better Through Experiment in a Box (XB): Qualitative Interpretive Description and Prototheory Development of Tuning.

BACKGROUND: Experiment in a Box (XB) is a guided, time-limited framework designed to help individuals test and adapt simple eating and movement heuristics within the context of everyday life. Rather than emphasizing external performance metrics alone, XB invites participants to evaluate practices through felt experience, including whether a practice helps them feel better, worse, or the same. Although prior XB studies have shown promise for supporting health behavior change, less is known about the experiential and interpretive processes through which participants use XB to connect felt experi

A Web-Based Intervention (Germ Defence) to Increase Handwashing During a Pandemic: Process Evaluations of a Randomized Controlled Trial and Public Dissemination.

BACKGROUND: Washing hands helps prevent transmission of seasonal and pandemic respiratory viruses. In a randomized controlled trial (RCT) during the swine flu outbreak, participants with access to a fully automated, digital intervention promoting handwashing reported washing their hands more often and experienced fewer respiratory tract infections than those without access to the intervention. Based on these findings, the intervention was adapted, renamed as "Germ Defence," and a study was designed to assess the preliminary dissemination of the intervention to the general public to help preven

Effect of decreasing afferent vagal activity with ondansetron on symptoms of bulimia nervosa: a randomised, double-blind trial.

BACKGROUND: Several lines of evidence have led us to postulate that afferent vagal hyperactivity could be an important factor in the pathophysiology of the eating disorder bulimia nervosa. Ondansetron is a peripherally active antagonist of the serotonin receptor 5-HT3, and is marketed for prevention of vagally-mediated emesis caused by cancer chemotherapeutic agents. We investigated the effects of ondansetron on bulimic behaviours in patients with severe and chronic bulimia nervosa in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. METHODS: We enrolled patients with severe bulimia nervo

Oral Health of Children and Adolescents in the United Arab Emirates: A Systematic Review of the Past Decade.

Oral diseases are a universal public health problem with serious health and economic burdens. These diseases are a major concern in the pediatric population specifically. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), among all the diseases that affect children, oral diseases, particularly early childhood caries, are the most common despite improvement in the provision of oral health services. Enhancing oral health status is one of the key public health goals in the country. This current systematic review aims to summarize the available data on oral health among children and adolescents in the UAE over th

Food acculturation and nutrient intake among international students in India: an exploratory cross-cultural study.

INTRODUCTION: Food acculturation and dietary transitions among international students (IS) in Western countries have been reported to result in undesirable changes in eating behaviors and dietary patterns, which may negatively affect nutritional status and health after migration. These dietary changes may be influenced by various factors specific to the host country. Given the recent increase in IS enrollment in culturally diverse Asian countries such as India, there is a need to investigate food acculturation in the Indian context. Therefore, this study explored food acculturation, changes in

Comparison of a low carbohydrate intake and standard carbohydrate intake on refeeding hypophosphatemia in children and adolescents with anorexia nervosa: a pilot randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional rehabilitation for patients with anorexia nervosa involves balancing the need for weight gain whilst mitigating the risk of refeeding syndrome. Graded caloric increases and restriction of calories from carbohydrate have been used to minimise the risk of developing refeeding hypophosphatemia. There is little evidence to support the recommended nutrient composition, specifically the recommended carbohydrate intake that is safe in this population. The aim of this pilot study was to compare the effect of a low and a standard carbohydrate feeding protocol on serum phosphate

Rethinking the Prevention of Cognitive Decline in Healthy Older Adults: The Motor-Cognitive Active Gamified Immersive Cultural (MAGIC) Exergames.

Though exergames attract considerable research interest as tools for preserving cognitive function in older adults, a decade of meta-analytic evidence reveals a persistent gap between theoretical promise and empirical demonstration: exergames rarely outperform conventional motor-cognitive training and do not generate the sustained engagement that preventive benefit requires. These results reflect limitations that are structural: the field focused predominantly on clinical populations rather than primary prevention; training concepts borrowed from rehabilitation protocols rather than grounded i

Development of the Screening Tool for Autism in Two-Year-Olds-Brief Form: Accuracy in Detecting Autism in Toddlers.

Early diagnosis of autism is crucial for timely intervention, yet existing screening tools are often limited by administration time in clinical settings. This study developed and evaluated the Screening Tool for Autism in Two-Year-Olds-Brief Form (STAT-BF) for detecting autism in toddlers aged less than 36 months. In Study 1, two independent samples of 40 toddlers each (20 autistic and 20 with developmental delays [DDs]) were analyzed using chi-square tests to identify discriminative items. Five items (Turn-taking, Bubbles, Snack, Balloon, and Bag of Toys) were retained, with a cutoff score of

Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Testing of Golden Rice Cookies With Piper Crocatum Active Extract for Preventing Foot Ulcers in Patients With Diabetes: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) present a formidable challenge to both patients and health care systems. DFUs significantly reduce the quality of life for patients, prolong hospital stays, and are the cause of approximately 70,000 lower limb amputations across the globe annually. Prevention of DFUs primarily involves the optimization of blood sugar levels and the effective management of complications, particularly peripheral neuropathy. Golden Rice has been proven to lower blood sugar levels due to its beta-carotene content, and Piper crocatum (P. crocatum) has been found to be effecti
