Delivering the Thinking Healthy Programme as a universal group intervention integrated into routine antenatal care: a randomized-controlled pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Women with perinatal depression and their children are at increased risk of poor health outcomes. There is a need to implement non-stigmatizing interventions into existing health systems which reduce psychosocial distress during pregnancy and prevent perinatal depression. We adapted the WHO-endorsed Thinking Healthy Programme (THP) to be delivered universally to all women attending routine online pregnancy schools in Istanbul, Turkey. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of this intervention. METHODS: This mixed-methods study incorporated a two-arm pilot

Causes of stillbirth and death among children younger than 5 years in eastern Hararghe, Ethiopia: a population-based post-mortem study.

BACKGROUND: Child mortality is high in Ethiopia, but reliable data on the causes of death are scarce. We aimed to gather data for the contributory causes of stillbirth and child deaths in eastern Ethiopia. METHODS: In this population-based post-mortem study, we established a death-notification system in health facilities and in the community in Kersa (rural), Haramaya (rural) and Harar (urban) in eastern Ethiopia, at a new site of the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network. We collected ante-mortem data, did verbal autopsies, and collected post-mortem samples via

Trends of reported foodborne diseases at the Ridge Hospital, Accra, Ghana: a retrospective review of routine data from 2009-2013.

BACKGROUND: There are over 250 foodborne diseases and are of growing public health concern worldwide. The distribution of these diseases varies from one locality to the other. Foodborne diseases come about as a result of ingestion of food contaminated with microorganisms or chemicals. The most common clinical presentation of foodborne disease takes the form of gastrointestinal symptoms; although other systems of the body can also be affected and represents a considerable burden of disability as well as mortality. The current study was carried out with the aim of describing the trends and patte

A 10-year comparison of short versus long-term court-ordered psychiatric hospitalization: a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: The Israel Mental Health Act of 1991 stipulates a process for court-ordered involuntary psychiatric hospitalization. As in many Western countries, this process is initiated when an individual is deemed "not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder (NCR-MD)" or "incompetent to stand trial (IST)." A patient thus hospitalized may be discharged by the district psychiatric committee (DPC). The decision rendered by the DPC is guided by an amendment to the Mental Health Act that states that the length of the hospitalization should be in accordance with the maximum time of incar

[Ophthalmology and urban underprivileged. Experience of 150 patients].

INTRODUCTION: An ophthalmology consultation was carried out at the Hôtel-Dieu to facilitate eye care in underprivileged patients referred by the general medicine PASS (socialized health care) of the same hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The files of 150 consecutive patients examined by a single ophthalmologist between January 2012 and June 2013 were reviewed. A standard examination was performed in these patients, sent with a consult sheet, to which a response was sent to PASS. As necessary, prescriptions were also written for the patients. RESULTS: Most patients (89/150) were immigrants fro

UK Renal Registry 16th annual report: chapter 6 demographics and outcomes of patients from different ethnic groups on renal replacement therapy in the UK.

INTRODUCTION: This chapter describes the patient characteristics and outcomes for the three main ethnic groups (White, South Asian, Black) on renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the UK. METHODS: Data on patients (>18 years old) from all 71 UK adult renal centres starting RRT between 2003 and 2012 were considered. Scottish centres were excluded due to poor ethnicity data. RESULTS: The age-gender standardized incidence ratio of RRT was higher (2-3 times) in regions with a high ethnic minority population compared to those with a low ethnic minority population. South Asian and Black patients were

Frequency of HIV-testing and factors associated with multiple lifetime HIV-testing among a rural population of Zambian men.

BACKGROUND: Across sub-Saharan Africa, men's levels of HIV-testing remain inadequate relative to women's. Men are less likely to access anti-retroviral therapy and experience higher levels of morbidity and mortality once initiated on treatment. More frequent HIV-testing by men at continued risk of HIV-infection is required to facilitate earlier diagnosis. This study explored the frequency of HIV-testing among a rural population of men and the factors associated with more frequent HIV-testing. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a population-based survey in three rural district in Za

Faecal colonization with extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in rural Burkina Faso.

OBJECTIVES: The burden of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) is increasing globally and is often linked to community-acquisition in low-resource settings. In sub-Saharan Africa, occurrence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in rural areas remains understudied despite anticipated higher risks. We investigated the epidemiology and genetic characteristics of ESBL-E in rural Burkina Faso. METHODS: In a community-based cross-sectional survey (May 2021 to May 2022), participants were randomly selected in two health catchment areas, and through face-to-face interviews,

G6PD activity patterns and a stable adjusted male median derived from 16 years of clinical laboratory data.

PURPOSE: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, the most common enzymopathy worldwide, poses significant clinical and public health challenges, particularly in malaria-endemic regions. Despite the importance of quantitative G6PD activity assessments, clinically meaningful deficiency thresholds remain difficult to define owing to biological variability related to age, sex, and X-linked inheritance. The adjusted male median (AMM) is a recommended framework for defining 100% activity and deriving assay- and region-specific thresholds. However, large-scale evaluations of AMM stabilit

Estimating Impact Based on Stages of Mental Illness on Employment and Earnings in Bangkok Metropolitan Region.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests mental disorders are associated with substantial economic burden. However, as the status of mental illness tends to change over time, estimating the burden based on cross-sectional presence or severity of illness may be problematic. An approach based on illness staging may provide a more stable estimate. AIMS OF THE STUDY: We aim to explore whether three predefined stages of mental illness (i.e. early active, remitted, chronic) have differential impact on employment and earnings. METHODS: A community survey of household population aged 18 and over in a universit

Improving the postnatal outcomes of new mothers.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal depression persists worldwide as a troubling issue for many new mothers and their families. The practice of early discharge within 72 hours after birth from maternity hospitals in Australia requires community-based care of new mothers, typically provided by community midwives initially, and then by maternal and child health nurses (MCHN). This latter workforce encounters the onset of distress/depression in vulnerable women and is expected to manage their care, but their training does not equip sufficiently them to do this. AIMS: The aim of the study was to evaluate the e

Assessing the natural and anthropogenic radionuclide activities of the Pechora River estuary: Bottom sediments and water (Arctic Ocean Basin).

This paper studies the activity of natural and technogenic radionuclides in bottom sediments and surface water of the Pechora River estuary, which is the largest Arctic river within the European part of Russia. The relevance of conducting radioecological studies of this region is associated with active oil and gas activities in the Pechora basin and the presence of potential sources of radiation hazard. The average activities of 137Cs, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in bottom sediments were 0.16, 18.72, 13.36, and 373.59 Bq·kg-1, respectively. The average activity of 226Ra in the bottom sediments of th

Nutritional status and dietary diversity of school-age children living with HIV: a cross-sectional study in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS continues to be a major public health concern for children. Each day, worldwide, approximately 440 children became newly infected with HIV, and 270 children died from AIDS-related causes in 2018. Poor nutrition has been associated with accelerated disease progression, and sufficient dietary diversity is considered a key to improve children's nutritional status. Therefore, this study aims to 1) examine nutritional status of school-age children living with HIV in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and 2) identify factors associated with their nutritional status, especially taking their d

The incidence and antimicrobial resistance of Shigella-attributable diarrhoea in young children in low-income and middle-income countries from the multicountry Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) Shigella Surveillance Study: a prospective, facility-based hybrid surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: Shigella is a leading cause of dysentery and watery diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) with consequences beyond diarrhoea for children younger than 5 years, including environmental enteric dysfunction and linear growth impairment. We established the burden, serotypes, and antibiotic resistance patterns of Shigella-diarrhoea among young children in LMICs to inform vaccine trial planning and eventual vaccine introduction in high-burden countries. METHODS: The Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) study was a prospective, facility-based hybrid surveillance study

Risk factors for quinolone-resistance in women presenting with Escherichia coli acute pyelonephritis.

UNLABELLED: In France, according to the National Epidemiology Observatory of Bacterial Resistance to Antibiotics, 15.3% of outpatient urinary Escherichia coli isolates were fluoroquinolone-resistant in 2010. This puts to question the relevance of empirical fluoroquinolone therapy for community-acquired acute pyelonephritis (APN), potentially severe infections. OBJECTIVES: We had for aim to identify individual risk factors for quinolone-resistant E. coli in community-acquired APN. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 344 adult female patients presenting with E. coli APN was c

Spatial distribution of gambling exposure and vulnerability: an ecological tool to support health inequality reduction.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research by Public Health has redefined harmful gambling, shifting the focus from problematic people with irresponsible behaviour to 'gamblogenic' environments. The aim of this research was to support this alternative perspective with concrete ecological tools for characterizing harmful environments. Studies that analyse the spatial distribution of gambling show that people living in the most disadvantaged areas have greater access to gambling and are more affected by the harms of gambling. Despite their quality methodology and usefulness, the scope of geographic access meas
