Strongyloidiasis, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, is diagnosis considered as a challenge to clinician and laboratory technician. Because the auto-infective larvae are difficult to eradicate, one regimen dose may be in-sufficient and re-treatment of patients on two occasions, at 1 and 2 months after the initial treatment dose was recommended. BACKGROUND: The migration of foreign workers from developing regions to developed countries may potentially lead to transmission of intestinal parasitic infections. In order to determine the relationship between intestinal parasitic infections and the health status of foreign workers, 302 Thai laborers brought to Taiwan were examined in this study. A series of 74 consecutive patients (48 women, 26 men) were operated for abdominal hydatid disease between June 1949 and December 1995. The patients ranged in age from 15 to 81 years (median 49 years). In 69 cases only the liver was affected; two patients had concomitant extrahepatic disease (one spleen, one spleen and lung), and 3 had cysts in the spleen only. The efficacy of long-term chemotherapy in nonresectable alveolar echinococcosis is debated, particularly because of the difficulty in defining therapeutic success. In this study the effect of chemotherapy on the parasitic mass was evaluated in a series of 37 patients. From a total of 1,020 students examined, 983 (92%) showed positive results for at least one species of parasite. Six months after treatment, a sample of 383 students (37.5%) was reevaluated and 347 (90.6%) presented positive results. There was no significant change in prevalence before and after treatment, although the number of individuals that had multiple parasitism was significantly lower in the second sample.
