Comparison of a novel hybrid hook locking plate fixation method with the conventional AO hook plate fixation method for Neer type V distal clavicle fractures.

BACKGROUND: The conventional AO hook locking compression plate (LCP) (Synthes, Solothurn, Switzerland) has only three holes for lateral fragments; therefore it is not suitable for use during the fixation of small-comminuted fragments in some cases. Recently, a novel hybrid hook LCP (TDM, Seoul, Korea) was developed to overcome this limitation. Here, we evaluated the clinical and radiologic outcomes of a novel hybrid hook LCP for Neer type V distal clavicle fractures compared to the outcomes of a conventional AO hook plate. METHODS: Seventy-eight consecutive patients who underwent hook LCP fix

Arthroscopic subacromial decompression and rotator cuff debridement for stage II and stage III impingement.

Arthroscopic subacromial decompression and rotator cuff debridement was performed on 61 consecutive patients with either stage II or stage III impingement syndrome: 27 with no actual tear of the cuff (group IIa); 21 with a partial-thickness tear (group IIb); and 13 with full-thickness tears (group III). Patients were seen in follow-up at a minimum of 2 years (mean 27.7 months). Apical oblique and outlet radiographic views of the shoulder were used to evaluate both preoperative subacromial pathology and to document removal of adequate bone postoperatively. Patients were evaluated pre- and posto

Football injuries: current concepts.

Football is one of the most popular sports in the United States and is the leading cause of sports-related injury. A large focus in recent years has been on concussions, sudden cardiac death, and heat illness, all thought to be largely preventable health issues in the young athlete. Injury prevention through better understanding of injury mechanisms, education, proper equipment, and practice techniques and preseason screening may aid in reducing the number of injuries. Proper management of on-field injuries and health emergencies can reduce the morbidity associated with these injuries and may

A randomized clinical trial comparing open to arthroscopic acromioplasty with mini-open rotator cuff repair for full-thickness rotator cuff tears: disease-specific quality of life outcome at an average 2-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears affect patients' quality of life. The evolution toward less invasive operative techniques for rotator cuff repair requires appropriate comparisons with the standard open procedure, using validated outcomes in a randomized fashion. HYPOTHESIS: There is no difference in disease-specific quality of life outcomes at 2 years between an open surgical repair (open) versus an arthroscopic acromioplasty with mini-open (scope mini-open) repair for patients with full-thickness rotator cuff tears. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. METHODS: P

Arthroscopic subacromial decompression for chronic impingement. Two- to five-year results.

Subacromial decompression was performed arthroscopically on 65 patients who were evaluated two to five years after the procedure. None had full thickness rotator cuff tears. Patients with partial thickness cuff tears were included in this study in order to allow comparison of arthroscopic acromioplasty with open acromioplasty for stage II impingement. On the UCLA shoulder rating scale, 89% of the cases in this study achieved a satisfactory result. These results compare favourably with those reported following open acromioplasty. The arthroscopic procedure is technically demanding. When properl

Joint Pain and Arthritis as First Clinical Manifestation of Systemic Amyloidosis and Multiple Myeloma: Case Report and Brief Literature Review.

Amyloidosis is a rare disease that is often seen in conjunction with multiple myeloma (MM). Its damage varies depending on the anatomical site affected; however, it is believed that many cases of amyloidosis are misrecognized due to the fact that its signs and symptoms are nonspecific. Joint amyloidosis, in particular, may be confused with degenerative or autoimmune diseases. When it is associated with MM, it can significantly precede the diagnosis of the latter. We describe a case report of a woman of Nigerian heritage diagnosed with MM with widespread joint manifestations compatible with a d
