Subgingival root brushing in deep human periodontal pockets.

OBJECTIVE: The short-term clinical and microbiological effects of patient-applied subgingival root brushing were assessed on untreated deep human periodontal pockets. METHODS: Assessments of plaque, bleeding on probing, probing depth, total cultivable subgingival counts, and cultivable counts and proportions of six putative periodontal pathogens were carried out at baseline and after 14 days on two contralateral > or = 6 mm bleeding interproximal posterior sites in each of 11 adults with untreated chronic periodontitis. One of the sites was randomly assigned to daily patient-applied subgingiv

Enhanced expression of vascular endothelial growth factor by periodontal pathogens in gingival fibroblasts.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has recently attracted attention as a potent inducer of vascular permeability and angiogenesis. Aberrant angiogenesis is often associated with lesion formation in chronic periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the properties of VEGF expression in human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) culture. HGF were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), vesicle (Ve) and outer membrane protein (OMP) from Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. HGF constitutively produced VEGF and levels were significantly enhanced (P <

Clinical significance of antibiotic therapy in guided tissue regeneration with a resorbable membrane.

This study was designed to evaluate the clinical significance of antibiotic therapy combined with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) therapy with a collagen membrane. The subjects were 20 adults diagnosed with periodontitis (20 intrabony periodontal defects). Ten patients were treated with GTR alone (control group) and the other 10 patients were treated with a combination of GTR and antibiotics (antibiotic group). In the antibiotic group, minocycline ointment was applied locally before GTR therapy, and doxycycline and amoxyline were systemically administered after GTR therapy. Clinical manifesta

Antibacterial effects of blackberry extract target periodontopathogens.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial agents provide valuable adjunctive therapy for the prevention and the control of oral diseases. Limitations in their prolonged use have stimulated the search for new, naturally occurring agents with more specific activity and fewer adverse effects. Here we sought to determine the antibacterial properties of blackberry extract (BBE) in vitro against oral bacterial commensals and periodontopathogens. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The effects of whole and fractionated BBE on the metabolism of 10 different oral bacteria were evaluated using the colorimetric water-s

Hyaluronic Acid as an adjunct after scaling and root planing: a prospective randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The study is designed to determine the effect on clinical variables, subgingival bacteria, and local immune response brought about by application of hyaluronan-containing gels in early wound healing after scaling and root planing (SRP). METHODS: In this randomized clinical study, data from 34 individuals with chronic periodontitis were evaluated after full-mouth SRP. In the test group (n = 17), hyaluronan gels in two molecular weights were additionally applied during the first 2 weeks after SRP. The control group (n = 17) was treated with SRP only. Probing depth (PD) and clinical

The use of ozonated water and 0.2% chlorhexidine in the treatment of periodontitis patients: a clinical and microbiologic study.

BACKGROUND: The development of periodontal disease has been thought to be associated with several restricted members of the oral anaerobic species, such as black-pigmented Porphyromonas species and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), in the subgingival environment. Apart from bacteria, certain viruses and fungi that are associated with periodontal disease are also present in the subgingival plaque . MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, crossover split-mouth design was performed. A total of 16 patients suffering from generalized chronic periodontitis were selected for the

Granulocyte chemotactic protein 2 (gcp-2/cxcl6) complements interleukin-8 in periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mucosal inflammatory responses are orchestrated largely by pro-inflammatory chemokines. The chemokine granulocyte chemotactic protein 2 (CXCL6) is involved in neutrophil recruitment and migration. Previous studies have shown that granulocyte chemotactic protein 2 is up-regulated during mucosal inflammation (e.g. in inflammatory bowel disease), similarly to the functionally and structurally related chemokine interleukin-8. Nevertheless, unlike interleukin-8, a role of granulocyte chemotactic protein 2 in gingival inflammation has not been yet demonstrated. In this stud

Prevalence and risk indicators for destructive periodontal diseases in 3 urban American minority populations.

BACKGROUND, AIMS: Destructive periodontal diseases have been reported disproportionately more prevalent and severe in African-Americans relative to other American populations. Differences in subgingival microbiota and host immune response have also been reported for African-Americans, implying that risk factors for disease progression may also differ for these populations. Since it is not clear whether these differences are truly genetic or due to confounding variables such as social economic status, we examined a series of clinical, environmental, demographic, and microbiologic features assoc

Molecular and immunological characterization of a 64-kDa protein of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans.

The 64-kDa protein to which about half the sera from patients with localized juvenile periodontitis and rapidly progressive periodontitis reacted strongly was purified from Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans Y4. Determination of the N-terminal sequence of the protein revealed that it was a GroEL-like protein. The DNA fragment containing the groEL gene of A. actinomycetemcomitans was amplified by polymerase chain reaction, and the groESL operon was cloned by using colony hybridization with the amplified fragment from A. actinomycetemcomitans chromosomal DNA. Sequence analysis revealed that st

Vacuoles, E1 Enzyme, X-linked, Autoinflammatory, and Somatic (VEXAS) Syndrome: A Case Report.

VEXAS is an acronym that stands for the technical terms of key descriptors of the condition: vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, and somatic (VEXAS) syndrome, which is a recently identified autoinflammatory disorder primarily affecting men older than 50 years of age. It is commonly associated with a somatic mutation in the X-linked ubiquitin-activating enzyme-encoding UBA1 gene. This condition manifests in a range of hematologic and systemic inflammatory symptoms, such as cytopenias, recurrent fevers, and an elevated risk for hematologic malignancies like myelodysplastic syndrome
