Transient global amnesia associated with the infusion of DMSO-cryopreserved autologous peripheral blood stem cells.

Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is a solvent commonly used for the cryopreservation of autologous peripheral blood stem cells (APBSC). Side effects upon infusion of DMSO-cryopreserved APBSC mainly consist of nausea, emesis, chills, rigors, and cardiovascular events, such as bradyarrhythmia or hypotension. We report the case of a patient who received DMSO-cryopreserved APBSC after myeloablative chemotherapy for a relapsing lymphoma. The patient developed a rare reaction during the infusion manifesting as transient global amnesia. The clinical course during the reaction is described and an explanation

A Semi-floating Body Memory Featuring Brain-like Behaviors.

Innovating electronic devices to mimic human brain behaviors has been a long-standing desire. (Mehonic, A., Kenyon, A. J. Brain-inspired computing needs a master plan. Nature 2022, 604, 255-260 and Mead, C. Neuromorphic electronic systems. Proceedings of the IEEE 1990, 78, 1629-1636). Here, we present a semi-floating body memory (SFBM) exhibiting various human brain-like memory behaviors. The SFBM is designed similarly to a p-type silicon-on-insulator (SOI) MOSFET, except that a metal/graphene/silicon overlapping heterojunction is formed close to the drain. The proper operation of device termi

Initial Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Characteristics and Recovery Patterns Among Females Across the United States Military Service Academies: A Report from the NCAA-DoD CARE Consortium.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has been described in the United States (US) military service academy cadet population, but female-specific characteristics and recovery outcomes are poorly characterized despite sex being a confounder. Our objective was to describe female cadets' initial characteristics, assessment performance, and return-to-activity outcomes post-mTBI. Female cadets (n = 472) from the four US military service academies who experienced a mTBI completed standardized mTBI assessments from pre-injury to acute initial injury and unrestricted return-to-duty (uRTD). Initial injury

[Cranial trauma: the predictability of the presentation symptoms as a screening for radiologic study].

A prospective study was performed on 4,262 consecutive patients who had had skull examinations for recent head trauma. Clinical signs and symptoms and patient history were correlated with skull fractures and intracranial sequelae as identified on CT studies, in order to evaluate the predictive value of each clinical finding and to identify high-yield referral criteria. Ninety-seven skull fractures (3%) and 32 intracranial sequelae (0.7%) were observed. All the intracranial complications were observed in patients with fractures and with altered consciousness of some degrees (Glasgow Coma Scale

Transient Global Amnesia Linked to Impairment of Brain Venous Drainage: An Ultrasound Investigation.

Background: Previous neuroimaging and ultrasound studies suggested that compression and stenosis of the internal jugular vein (IJV) in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) may impair IJV drainage, while a patent IJV releases intracranial pressure caused by the Valsalva maneuver (VM). Methods: Seventy-nine TGA patients with complete ultrasound examination data during admission were recruited prospectively to evaluate IJV drainage, which included the time-averaged mean velocity, and the cross-sectional lumen area of the IJV at the vein's middle (J2) and distal (J3) segments and the cross

Magnetic seizure therapy improves mood in refractory major depression.

This report describes the successful treatment of a patient suffering from an episode of drug-resistant major depression using magnetic seizure therapy (MST). The patient suffered from recurrent major depression since adolescence. MST is a novel brain stimulation method using transcranial magnetic stimulation at convulsive parameters in order to induce therapeutic seizures under general anesthesia in the same setting used for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The first use of therapeutic magnetic seizure induction in a psychiatric patient took place at the University Hospital in Bern, Switzerla

Learning-specific, time-dependent increases in hippocampal Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II activity and AMPA GluR1 subunit immunoreactivity.

Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CAMK II) and one of its target, alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid (AMPA), glutamate receptors have been shown to participate in both long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus, and in spatial, as well as in a variety, of learning paradigms. Recently, we were able to demonstrate that the intrahippocampal infusion of a specific inhibitor of CAMK II (KN62) provoked full retrograde amnesia of an inhibitory avoidance learning in rats when given immediately, but not 120 or 240 min, after training. Furthermore, this task is acco

External validation of the clinical indications of computed tomography (CT) of the head in patients with low-energy geriatric hip fractures.

INTRODUCTION: On evaluation of the clinical indications of computed tomography (CT) scan of head in the patients with low-energy geriatric hip fractures, Maniar et al. identified physical evidence of head injury, new onset confusion, and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)<15 as predictive risk factors for acute findings on CT scan. The goal of the present study was to validate these three criteria as predictive risk factors for a larger population in a wider geographical distribution. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients ≥65 years of age with low-energy hip fractures from 6 trauma centers in a wide geographi

Transient global amnesia may be caused by cerebral vein thrombosis.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a disorder of unknown aetiology, characterized by sudden loss of anterograde memory, in the absence other neurological signs or symptoms, followed by complete recovery in less than 24h. Precipitating actions such as strenuous physical activity or valsalva-like manoeuvres are frequently reported. Since first described in 1958, by Fisher and Adams, the possible pathophysiology has undergone much speculation. Nonconvulsive epileptic seizures, migraine, paradoxical embolism thorough a patent foramen ovale, and transient ischemic attacks have been proposed as poten

Comparative studies on the effects of the nootropic drugs adafenoxate, meclofenoxate and piracetam, and of citicholine on scopolamine-impaired memory, exploratory behavior and physical capabilities (experiments on rats and mice).

The effects of adafenoxate (Adf), meclofenoxate (Mf), piracetam (Pc), and citicholine (CCh) on scopolamine (Scop)--impaired memory and exploratory behavior (experiments on rats) and on physical capabilities (experiments on mice) were studied. In the experiments with scopolamine (2 mg/kg i.p.) we used the step-through passive avoidance method to determine the memory changes. In the case of single treatment with the drugs tested scopolamine was injected immediately after training and Adf, Mf, and CCh at doses of 20 and 100 mg/kg and Pc at a dose of 100 mg/kg were administered immediately after s

Relapse and long-term cognitive performance after brief pulse or ultrabrief pulse right unilateral electroconvulsive therapy: A multicenter naturalistic follow up.

BACKGROUND: Superior cognitive functioning for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) with right unilateral (RUL) ultrabrief pulse (UBP) stimulation compared to RUL brief pulse (BP) stimulation is not clearly established and long-term data is needed. METHODS: We conducted a prospective naturalistic follow-up of 87 inpatients from three tertiary psychiatric hospitals. Before these patients entered the follow up phase, they had participated in a RCT comparing twice weekly RUL BP (1.0 ms) with RUL UBP (0.3-0.4 ms) ECT eight times seizure threshold until remission (MADRS < 10), for a maximum of six week

Relationship between postconcussion headache and neuropsychological test performance in high school athletes.

BACKGROUND: The relevance of headache to outcome after sports-related concussion is poorly understood. HYPOTHESES: High school athletes reporting headache approximately 1 week after injury will have significantly more other concussion symptoms and will perform more poorly on neuropsychological tests than athletes not experiencing headache. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Study participants included 109 high school athletes who had sustained concussion and who were divided into two groups: those reporting headache 7 days after injury and those reporting no headaches. The two

Antianxiety/sedative drugs. The benzodiazepines.

Oral presurgical medication with benzodiazepines carries several distinct advantages; it often reduces the patient's anxiety and allows for a "smoother" surgical procedure, provides analgesia, facilitates venipuncture, aids in the patient's tolerance of an ankle tourniquet, limits postoperative nausea and vomiting, and provides varying degrees of retrograde amnesia. Many podiatric surgeons prefer using oral anxiolytics/sedatives along with local anesthesia for their surgical patients because they are simple to use with in-office surgery. Patients may prefer this method because it allows them a

["Tingling feet," forgetfulness, and progressive personality changes in a 63-year-old patient].

A 63-year-old female was admitted to the hospital with leg and forearm paresthesias. We found progressive ataxia, dementia, and psychosocial deterioration. The clinical symptoms, the neurologic and psychiatric abnormalities together with the inflammatory cerebrospinal fluid alteration and the cerebral magnetic resonance imaging changes suggested a paraneoplastic etiology. It was confirmed by paraneoplastic antineuronal antibodies in the patient's serum and the histological diagnosis of a small cell bronchial carcinoma. The prognosis of patients with paraneoplastic symptoms is the better the ea

Hippocampal activation during the recall of remote spatial memories in radial maze tasks.

Temporally graded retrograde amnesia is observed in human patients with medial temporal lobe lesions as well as in animal models of medial temporal lobe lesions. A time-limited role for these structures in memory recall has also been suggested by the observation that the rodent hippocampus and entorhinal cortex are activated during the retrieval of recent but not of remote memories. One notable exception is the recall of remote memories for platform locations in the water maze, which requires an intact hippocampus and results in hippocampal activation irrespective of the age of the memory. The

Memory processes governing amphetamine-induced psychomotor sensitization.

We investigated how, under certain circumstances, the expression of psychomotor sensitization comes to be context-specific. Rats that had previously sustained 6-hydroxydopamine-induced unilateral dopamine depletion received repeated injections of d-amphetamine (AMPH) or saline in group-specific environments, and rotational behavior was measured as an index of psychomotor activation. Following these treatments some groups were given electroconvulsive shock (ECS), when memories of the drug experience were reactivated (and therefore vulnerable to disruption), in order to produce retrograde amnesi

Differential effect of posttraining naloxone, beta-endorphin, leu-enkephalin and electroconvulsive shock administration upon memory of an open-field habituation and of a water-finding task.

Rats were trained and tested in an open field for habituation of rearing responses, for a water-finding task, or for both tasks simultaneously. Training-test interval was 24 hr. The water-finding task consisted of locating a metal tube in one of the walls of the box, which was attached to a water bottle on the outside; animals were water deprived between training and testing. Retention was estimated by measuring the latency to lick from the tube on the test session. Rats learned this task either with or without water deprivation, also prior to training. Predictors of postconcussion syndrome in collegiate student-athletes.

OBJECTIVE Sport-related concussion (SRC) has emerged as a public health problem, especially among student-athletes. Whereas most concussions resolve by 2 weeks, a minority of patients experience postconcussion syndrome (PCS), in which symptoms persist for months. The objective of this study was to elucidate factors predictive of PCS among a sample of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes in the academic years 2009-2010 to 2014-2015. METHODS The SRC data originated from the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program (ISP) in the 2009-2010 to 2014-2015 academic seasons. The NCAA
