Municipal wastewater catchments are significant sources of symbiotic, opportunistic, and drug-resistant bacteria that can acquire or enhance their resistance. This "re-emergence of threats" presents a serious public health issue, especially during crisis conditions (COVID-19). The aim of this study was to propose a sampling algorithm, identify strategically important sites within the wastewater catchment, expand the range of bacterial indicators, and rapidly confirm potential threats using in vitro diagnostics in both raw and treated sewage. A parallel objective was to evaluate the effectivene

INTRODUCTION: Emergence of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative pathogens poses a significant challenge due to limited treatment options and higher mortality rates associated with infections caused by these pathogens. A combination of aztreonam (AT) and ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA-AVI) is an effective combination with synergistic activity against metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) producing carbapenem resistant Enterobacterales (CRE). This study aimed to compare the disc elution and disc-E strip method for assessing the synergistic effect of aztreonam and ceftazidime/avibactam against MBL-producing CRE

Background: Cefiderocol (CFD) is a novel cephalosporin targeting multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial (GNB) infections. It mimics siderophores to enter into GNB through iron transport receptors. However, evidence on its use in Hospital at Home (HaH) and outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) programs remains scarce. Objectives: The primary objective was to evaluate feasibility and efficacy of CFD in HaH setting. The secondary objective was to assess its safety. Methods: A retrospective, observational study was conducted across six Spanish centers between January 2023 and Decemb

Pastures have become one of the most important sources of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pollution, bringing risks to human health through the environment and the food that is grown there. Another significant source of food production is greenhouse horticulture, which is typically located near pastures. Through waterways, pasture-originated ARGs may transfer to the food in greenhouses. However, how these pasture-originated ARGs spread to nearby waterways and greenhouses has been much less investigated, while this may pose risks to humans through agricultural products. We analyzed 29 ARGs r

Surface runoff is a prevalent source via which emerging pollutants (i.e., antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs)) enter marine sediments. However, few studies have investigated the effect of emerging pollutants on the fate of ARGs in marine sediments. Therefore, three systems were established to measure the relative abundances of four common ARGs (i.e., blaTEM, tetA, tetC, and aphA) and the integron-integrase gene (intI1) after exposure to emerging pollutants in marine sediments from the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the So

Emerging extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae due to the production of β-lactamases and porin loss is a substantial worldwide concern. This study aimed to elucidate the role of outer membrane porin (OMP) loss, AmpC, and carbapenemases among extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing K. pneumoniae strains with XDR phenotype. This study analyzed 79 K. pneumoniae from several clinical sources and detected ESBLs in 29 strains co-harbored with other β-lactamases using standard microbiological practices and phenotypic procedures. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were de

Antibiotic resistance poses a major global health threat. Understanding emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance in environmental media is critical to the design of control strategies. Because antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) may be aerosolized from contaminated point sources and disseminated more widely in localized environments, we assessed ARGs in aerosols in urban La Paz, Bolivia, where wastewater flows in engineered surface water channels through the densely populated urban core. We quantified key ARGs and a mobile integron (MI) via ddPCR and E. coli spp. as a fecal indicato

Migratory birds may have a vital role in the spread of antimicrobial resistance across habitats and regions, but empirical data remain scarce. We investigated differences in the gut microbiome composition and the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in faeces from four migratory waterbirds wintering in South-West Spain that differ in their habitat use. The white stork Ciconia ciconia and lesser black-backed gull Larus fuscus are omnivorous and opportunistic birds that use highly anthropogenic habitats such as landfills and urban areas. The greylag goose Anser anser and common crane

The spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) worldwide remains a major threat to public health. Notably, carbapenemase-encoding genes are usually located in plasmids harboring other resistance determinants, and isolates having multiple plasmids are often highly resistant to carbapenems. In this study, we characterized the genetic context of coproduction of KPC-2, VIM-1, and FosA3 via two plasmids in the multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae sequence type 11 (ST11) isolate JS187, recovered during an outbreak of KPC-2-producing K. pneumoniae in a Chinese teaching hospital in 2

Vibrio cholerae non-O1, non-O139 bacteria are natural inhabitants of aquatic ecosystems and have been sporadically associated with human infections. They mostly lack the two major virulence factors of toxigenic V. cholerae serogroups O1 and O139 strains, which are the causative agent of cholera. Non-O1, non-O139 strains are found in water bodies, sediments, and in association with other aquatic organisms. Occurrence of these bacteria in fecal specimens of waterfowl were reported, and migratory birds likely contribute to the long-distance transfer of strains. We investigated four V. cholerae no

Salmonella spp. is an important zoonotic pathogen related to foodborne diseases. Despite that quinolones/fluoroquinolones are considered a relevant therapeutic strategy against resistant isolates, the increase in antimicrobial resistance is an additional difficulty in controlling bacterial infections caused by Salmonella spp. Thus, the acquisition of resistance to quinolones in Salmonella spp. is worrisome to the scientific community along with the possibility of transmission of resistance through plasmids. This study investigated the prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR)

BACKGROUND: Resistance to cephalosporins in Enterobacteriaceae is mainly due to the production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). Little is known about ESBL-producing bacteria in Bangladesh. Therefore, the study presents results of phenotypic and molecular characterization of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli from hospitals in Bangladesh.
METHODS: A total of 339 E. coli isolated from patients with urinary tract and wound infections attending three different medical hospitals in urban and rural areas of Bangladesh between 2003-2007 were screened for ESBL-production by the double disk di
