Sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome caused by a dysregulated host response to infection and involves failure of immune, metabolic, respiratory, cardiovascular, thermal, endocrine, and autonomic regulation. In this review, we propose that the carotid body may act as a peripheral interoceptive checkpoint in the transition from adaptive host defense to immunometabolic decompensation. The discussion is organized around four interconnected dimensions. First, we examine inflammatory and metabolic signals that may be detected by the carotid body during sepsis, including cytokines, lactate, glucose,

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a nutrient-responsive hormone classically associated with glucose homeostasis and food intake control, yet its receptor is broadly expressed throughout the central nervous system (CNS) in circuits governing complex cognitive processes. Here, we synthesize emerging evidence from preclinical models and human studies demonstrating that GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) signaling modulates multiple cognitive domains, including reward and motivational processes relevant to obesity and substance use disorder, affective-related behaviors, and learning and memory. We propose a

Time perception is inherently malleable, influenced by both emotional and bodily states. Past research suggests that transient heartbeat-linked interoceptive signals can modulate time perception, with some studies reporting that brief stimuli presented during cardiac systole are perceived as shorter than those during diastole. Here, we used electroencephalography (EEG) across two experiments to examine how such cardiac-phase effects are neurally instantiated, and how they interact with emotional content of the stimuli. In Experiment 1, participants judged the duration of brief neutral visual s

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) is a condition that may emerge following a violation of an individual's moral code. MI leads to significant functional impairment in many trauma-exposed civilians, with rumination proposed as a mechanism of action. Little is known about the neuropathophysiology of different MI dimensions, including MI related to transgressions caused by the self or others. We examined links between facets of MI, resting-state amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), and rumination in trauma-exposed civilians.
METHODS: Sixty adults (ages 18-56 years; 51 female) completed me

OBJECTIVE: To study large-scale network processing in visual snow syndrome (VSS) with and without migraine, we applied resting-state electroencephalographic microstate analysis.
BACKGROUND: VSS is characterized by a spectrum of visual symptoms, with the main symptom being perceived as flickering dots throughout the visual field. The syndrome is associated with migraine and tinnitus and is considered a network disorder, but the cause and pathophysiology are still largely unknown.
METHODS: In this case-control study, resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were selected from a co

The brain continuously receives interoceptive information about the state and function of our internal organs. For instance, each time the heart beats, the brain responds by generating time-locked activity, known as heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEP). When investigating HEPs, it is essential to adequately control for heartbeat-independent confounding activity to avoid false interpretations. In the present study, we highlight the pitfalls of uncontrolled analyses and advocate for the use of surrogate heartbeat analysis and pseudotrial correction, which are promising tools to control for spurious

BACKGROUND & HYPOTHESIS: Self-disorders (SDs), central features of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, primarily affect the pre-reflective sense of self, the fundamental experience of existing as a conscious subject. This disruption also impacts reflective self-consciousness. This study aims to further explore the neural correlates of self-disorders in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders by using a cognitive task designed to target approximate pre-reflective and reflective self-experience during fMRI.
STUDY DESIGN: 27 individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (patients, PT

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia impacts physical and mental health, affecting movement and body awareness. Non-pharmacological treatments like physiotherapy-based dance exercise intervention (PBDEI) may improve symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of PBDEI as a non-pharmacological intervention for chronic pain, focusing on improving body awareness and reducing pain perception in patients with chronic conditions.
METHODS: The study involved five women with fibromyalgia aged between 20 and 40 years, all with chronic pain in different body areas (e.g., back, head, right hemibody). P

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: People with eating disorders often experience disturbances of body experience across the domains of cognition, affect and perception. Some body-oriented therapies (BOT) - body-oriented psychological therapies (BOPT) and holistic body-oriented therapies (HBOT) - aim to improve mind-body connection and body experience and help people feel differently about managing their eating behaviours. This review aimed to identify and describe these BOT for eating disorders, investigate their effects and explore patients' experiences.
METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA gu

Abnormal functional connectivity (FC) within the fear network model (FNM) has been identified in panic disorder (PD) patients, but the specific local structural and functional properties, as well as effective connectivity (EC), remain poorly understood in PD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural and functional patterns of the FNM in PD. Magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 33 PD patients and 35 healthy controls (HCs). Gray matter volume (GMV), degree centrality (DC), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) were used t

Emotional states influence bodily physiology, as exemplified in the top-down process by which anxiety causes faster beating of the heart1-3. However, whether an increased heart rate might itself induce anxiety or fear responses is unclear3-8. Physiological theories of emotion, proposed over a century ago, have considered that in general, there could be an important and even dominant flow of information from the body to the brain9. Here, to formally test this idea, we developed a noninvasive optogenetic pacemaker for precise, cell-type-specific control of cardiac rhythms of up to 900 beats per

BACKGROUND: The hypothalamus plays a crucial role in regulating sleep-wake cycle and motivated behavior. Sleep disturbance is associated with impairment in cognitive and affective functions. However, how hypothalamic dysfunction may contribute to inter-related sleep, cognitive, and emotional deficits remain unclear.
METHODS: We curated the Human Connectome Project dataset and investigated how hypothalamic resting state functional connectivities (rsFC) were associated with sleep dysfunction, as evaluated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), cognitive performance, and subjective mood s

The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) is a critical mediator of stress responses and anxiety-like behaviors. Neurons expressing protein kinase C delta (BNSTPKCδ) are an abundant but understudied subpopulation implicated in inhibiting feeding, but which have conflicting reports about their role in anxiety-like behaviors. We have previously shown that expression of PKCδ is dynamically regulated by stress and that BNSTPKCδ cells are recruited during bouts of active stress coping. Here, we first show that in vivo activation of this population is mildly aversive. This aversion was insensit

Time duration, an essential feature of the physical world, is perceived and cognitively interpreted subjectively. While this perception is deeply connected with arousal and interoceptive signals, the underlying neural mechanisms remain elusive. As the insula is critical for integrating information from the external world with the organism's inner state, we hypothesized that it might have a central role in the perception of time duration and contribute to its estimation accuracy. We conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging study with 27 healthy participants performing temporal duration

BACKGROUND: Alterations in sensory processing, such as vision, taste, and interoceptive sensation, have been reported in adult anorexia nervosa (AN). Whether these symptoms are traits, states, or "scars" due to chronic starvation has not been fully established. Based on the hypothesis that alterations in sensory processing also occur in adolescent AN in the early stages of the disease, the present study was conducted using both self-administered and parent-administered sensory processing questionnaires.
METHODS: Children and adolescents with anorexia nervosa treated at a single tertiary eatin

The Feldenkrais Method (FM) is based on the learning of alternative movement patterns, carried out in an active and conscious way, which may have therapeutic effects. The objective of this systematic review is to identify the populations and conditions for which the FM can be used in physiotherapy and to determine the intervention modalities. Research in PubMed, Cochrane and PEDro databases was performed. The PEDro scale was employed to assess the methodological quality. Meta-analyses (MA) were performed whenever populations and outcome measures were comparable in at least two studies. Sixteen

Alexithymia is a dimensional trait characterized by difficulties identifying and describing feelings and an externally oriented thinking (EOT) style. Here, we explored interrelationships between alexithymia and measures assessing how individuals process and regulate their responses to environmental and body-based cues. Young adults (N = 201) completed self-report questionnaires assessing alexithymia, sensory processing sensitivity (SPS), interoceptive accuracy (IA), sensory processing styles, and current levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Whereas EOT was related to low orienting sensit

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been tested as therapy for several brain disorders and as a means to modulate cortical excitability and brain plasticity. Cortical effects of VNS, manifesting as vagal-evoked potentials (VEPs), are thought to arise from activation of ascending cholinergic and noradrenergic systems. However, it is unknown whether those effects are modulated by brain state at the time of stimulation. In 2 freely behaving macaque monkeys, we delivered short trains of 5 pulses to the left cervical vagus nerve at different frequencies (5-300 Hz) while recording local field potentia

Abnormal resting-state functional connectivity, as measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), has been reported in alcohol use disorders (AUD), but findings are so far inconsistent. Here, we exploited recent developments in graph-theoretical analyses, enabling improved resolution and fine-grained representation of brain networks, to investigate functional connectivity in 35 recently detoxified alcohol dependent patients versus 34 healthy controls. Specifically, we focused on the modular organization, that is, the presence of tightly connected substructures within a network, and o

INTRODUCTION: Numerous treatments suggest that brain plasticity changes after peripheral nerve injury (PNI), and most studies examining functional magnetic resonance imaging focused on abnormal changes in specific brain regions. However, it is the large-scale interaction of neuronal networks instead of isolated brain regions contributed to the functional recovery after PNI. In the present study, we examined the intra- and internetworks alterations between the related functional resting-state networks (RSNs) in a sciatic nerve injury rat model.
METHODS: Ninety-six female rats were divided into
