BACKGROUND: Opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome and breast carcinoma were initially described as neurologic and oncologic accompaniments of antineuronal nuclear autoantibody type 2 (ANNA-2, also known as anti-Ri). However, the neurologic spectrum of ANNA-2 autoimmunity is broader, includes a syndrome of jaw dystonia and laryngospasm, and can be accompanied by lung carcinoma.
OBJECTIVE: To describe clinically (with a video) ANNA-2-associated jaw dystonia and laryngospasm, its pathologic correlates, and therapeutic outcomes.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series with prospective clinical follow-up.

A 21 years old high school student, who, since early childhood, suffered from complete spinal paraplegia of unknown cause at D 10, suddenly, after a three week period with influenca -like prodromal symptoms, presented with acute polyradiculomeningoencephalitis . Positive reactions following Paul-Bunnell- Davidsohn -test and tests for specific antivirus IgG as well as specific IgM revealed acute Epstein-Barr-Virus infection, although no glandular signs could be found. The clinical findings consisted of peripheral sensory-motor tetraparesis, ataxia, nystagmus and disturbances of the caudal crani

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a significant global health challenge that results in profound physical and neurological impairments. Despite progress in medical care, the treatment options for SCI are still restricted and often focus on symptom management rather than promoting neural repair and functional recovery. This study focused on clarifying the impact of Schwann cell (SC) transplantation on the molecular, cellular, and functional basis of recovery in animal models of SCI.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Relevant studies were identified by conducting searches across multiple databases,

Feeding is a complex behaviour entailing elaborate interactions between forebrain, hypothalamic and brainstem neuronal circuits via multiple orexigenic and anorexigenic neuropeptides. Nucleobindin-2 (NUCB2)/nesfatin-1 is a negative regulator of food intake and body weight with a widespread distribution in rodent brainstem nuclei. However, its localisation pattern in the human brainstem is unknown. The present study aimed to explore NUCB2/nesfatin-1 immunoexpression in human brainstem nuclei and its possible correlation with body weight. Sections of human brainstem from 20 autopsy cases (13 mal

A 44-year-old man was hospitalized because of exertional dyspnea that had progressed for one month. A chest X-ray film showed bilateral small nodular and reticular shadows. The patient presented with a positive inflammatory reaction and hypoxemia. Bronchoalveolar davage fluid had a high lymphocyte fraction and a low CD4/CD8 ratio. Trichosporon cutaneum antibodies were detected, and a specimen obtained by transbronchial lung biopsy showed alveolitis with granuloma formation. The patient reacted positively on a provocation test that was done by having him stay home for 5 days. Summer-type hypers

The caudal serotonergic (5-HT) system is a critical component of a medullary "homeostatic network" that regulates protective responses to metabolic stressors such as hypoxia, hypercapnia, and hyperthermia. We define anatomically the caudal 5-HT system in the human medulla as 5-HT neuronal cell bodies located in the raphé (raphé obscurus, raphé magnus, and raphé pallidus), extra-raphé (gigantocellularis, paragigantocellularis lateralis, intermediate reticular zone, lateral reticular nucleus, and nucleus subtrigeminalis), and ventral surface (arcuate nucleus). These 5-HT neurons are adjacent to

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) encodes an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident glycoprotein, UL148, which activates the unfolded protein response (UPR) but is fully dispensable for viral replication in cultured cells. Hence, its previously ascribed roles in immune evasion and modulation of viral cell tropism are hypothesized to cause ER stress. Here, we show that UL148 is necessary and sufficient to drive the formation of prominent ER-derived structures that on average occupy 5% of the infected cell cytoplasm. The structures are sites where UL148 coalesces with cellular proteins involved in ER qu

Cervical or high thoracic spinal cord injury often results in autonomic dysreflexia, a condition characterized by exaggerated spinal reflexes and episodic hypertension, that may be caused by reorganization of synapses on sympathetic preganglionic neurons after loss of supraspinal input. To assess remodelling of synaptic input to identified preganglionic neurons, immunoreactivity for growth associated protein-43 was examined by fluorescent and electron microscopy in control rats with intact spinal cords and in rats seven to 30 days after midthoracic cord transection. This protein is found in ma

From the preceding it is evident that drop attacks can result from a myriad of causes. As in all situations, the patient's history and the clinical picture are the most important factors in arriving at the appropriate diagnosis. However, understanding the neurophysiologic basis of posture should prove significantly helpful in this endeavor.

The heat-sensitive transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channels are expressed in the peripheral and central nervous systems. However, there is no report on how the activation of TRPV1 causes the modulation of neuronal activity in the medullary respiratory center. We examined effects of capsaicin, a specific agonist of TRPV1 channels, on respiratory rhythm generation in brainstem-spinal cord preparation from newborn rats. Capsaicin induced a biphasic response in the respiratory rhythm (a transient decrease followed by an increase in the C4 rate). The second-phase excitatory effect

The anatomical distribution of neuropeptide tyrosine (NPY)-like immunoreactivity was investigated in the brain, olfactory organ and retina of the zebrafish, Danio rerio, during development and in juvenile specimens, by using the indirect immunofluorescence and the peroxidase-antiperoxidase methods. In 60 h post fertilization (hpf) embryos, NPY-like immunoreactive cell bodies appeared in the hypothalamus, within the posterior periventricular nucleus. Few positive nerve fibers were found in the hypothalamus and in the tegmentum of the mesencephalon. In 72 hpf embryos, a new group of NPY-like imm

To compare the sequential evolution of lesions developed by resistant (A/Sn) and susceptible (B10.A) mice to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection we inoculated a virulent isolate of the fungus and collected the pancreas/peripancreatic omentum monthly (from 1 to 6 months) post infection. After fixation, tissue sections were stained by conventional methods for light microscopy to investigate the cellular composition, the extracellular matrix (ECM) patterns and the morphology of the yeasts in the lesions. In both strains, the fungal lesions were localized mostly in the omentum; a few lesions i

Pick's disease is a progressive degenerative disorder of the human brain which involves not only numerous areas of the cerebral cortex but also a characteristic set of subcortical nuclei. The disorder is associated with the formation of abnormal and hyperphosphorylated tau protein, which occurs in only a few susceptible neuronal types and leads to major cytoskeletal alterations. Preferentially affected by the destructive process are small nerve cells of both cortical areas and subcortical nuclei. Immunoreactions for abnormally phosphorylated tau protein permit identification of the alterations

Acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) of childhood is a newly proposed disease entity characterized by symmetrically distributed necrotic brain lesions in the thalamus, cerebral white matter, brainstem, and cerebellum. We report a 4-year-old girl with severe psychomotor delay and horizontal gaze palsy as sequelae of ANE at 17 months of age. The computed tomography showed bilaterally symmetrical low density areas in the thalamus and low density areas in the left middle cerebral artery (MCA) region and the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) region. MRI (T 1-weighted) revealed unevenly distributed

The connections of nucleus basalis (NB) of the rostral forebrain of the zebra finch were investigated electrophysiologically and with anterograde and retrograde tracing methods to determine their functional organization, the sources of their pontine afferents, and the targets of their telencephalic efferents. The nucleus was found to be partitioned into three major components, a rostral lingual part that received a hypoglossal projection via a lateral subnucleus of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (PrV), a middle beak part that received a trigeminal projection via a medial subnucleus o

In chloralose-urethanized cats, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), applied by superfusion in steady-state concentration (10(-10)-10(-6) M) onto cortical vessels in situ resulted in a rapid concentration-dependent vasodilatation in vessels that were mildly constricted by prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) (5 X 10(-5) M) or hypocarbia (PaCO2 = 26). The maximum dilatation produced by VIP (10(-6) M) was about 60% over baseline in pial arteries and 40% in pial veins. Blockade of local neuronal activity with tetrodotoxin (TTX) (10(-5) M) had no effect on the VIP-evoked dilation of pial vessels. A

The subpopulation of primary vestibular afferents (PVA) displaying immunoreactivity for the calcium binding protein Calbindin D-28k (Calb) is constituted of particularly large bipolar neurons in the vestibular ganglion (VG) that innervate the central regions of the vestibular end organs exclusively via calyx endings on type I vestibular hair cells. These large-diameter PVA are characterized by irregular spontaneous discharge patterns and predominantly phasic firing properties with respect to natural vestibular stimulation. The present study describes the complete course and terminations of Cal

Brain activity patterns during echolocation and flight were assessed in mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii parnellii). Bats were injected intraperitoneally with [3H]2-deoxyglucose and restrained in a foam holder or allowed to fly for 20 min. Under resting conditions, low levels of [3H]2-deoxyglucose uptake were observed throughout the forebrain but relatively high uptake was found in brainstem auditory and vestibular centers. In flying, echolocating bats, marked increases in regional [3H]2-deoxyglucose uptake were apparent. All structures of the classical ascending auditory pathway were inte

Eighth nerve fibers from the saccule, utricle, lagena, and the anterior, horizontal, and posterior semicircular canals of a cichlid fish were traced to the octavolateralis region of the brainstem using HRP and degeneration methods. The anterior, magnocellular, descending, and posterior nuclei of the octavus column receive inputs from all endorgans, whereas the tangential nucleus receives projections only from the utricle and semicircular canals. The most rostral projections only from the utricle and semicircular canals. The most rostral projection from each endorgan is found in the eminentia g
