Significant morphological but little molecular differences between Trypanosoma of rodents from Alaska.

We examined blood smears of 173 rodents and 33 shrews captured at 4 sites in the Gates of the Arctic National Park, northern Alaska, in summer 2002. Trypanosoma spp. were detected in the plasma of 5 Microtus oeconomus, 4 Microtus miurus, and 1 Lemmus trimucronatus. The trypomastigote morphology from different individuals of M. oeconomus caught at the same site and of M. miurus from different sites varied significantly. The 4 DNA sequences obtained from the blood smear positive samples contained 2 different haplotypes very similar to each other and to that of Trypanosoma microti. Of possible ve

The Eyam plague revisited: did the village isolation change transmission from fleas to pulmonary?

Back in the 17th century the Derbyshire village of Eyam fell victim to the Black Death, which is thought to have arrived from London in some old clothes brought by a travelling tailor. The village population was 350 at the commencement of plague, of which only 83 survived. Led by the church leaders, the village community realized that the whole surrounding region was at risk from the epidemic, and therefore decided to seal themselves off from the other surrounding villages. In the first 275 days of the outbreak, transmission was predominantly from infected fleas to susceptible humans. From the

Comparison of lufenuron and nitenpyram versus imidacloprid for integrated flea control.

A one-year field study was carried out in 45 households in Cairns, North Queensland to evaluate the efficacy of three topical or systemic treatment programs in controlling cat flea (Ctenocephalidesfelis) infestations within the residence and on dogs and cats. Homes were randomly assigned to one of three treatments. In the first group of homes, lufenuron was administered orally to all household pets according to label recommendations for the study duration, and nitenpyram was administered orally once per week for the first 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, all pets in the household received a single dose

Systemic efficacy of nodulisporic acid against fleas on dogs.

Nodulisporic acid A (NSA) is a novel natural product from a new structural class that was shown previously to have insecticidal activity against blowfly larvae. To determine if there was useful systemic efficacy against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis). NSA was evaluated in an artificial membrane flea feeding device and in dogs. In the artificial membrane flea feeding device, adult C. felis were allowed to feed on bovine blood containing various concentrations of NSA through a Parafilm membrane. NSA killed the fleas with a 50% lethal concentration of 0.68 microg/ml and was approximately 10-fold m

Comparison of flea control strategies using imidacloprid or lufenuron on cats in a controlled simulated home environment.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of monthly treatments with imidacloprid (an adulticide) or lufenuron (an insect development inhibitor) for protecting cats against Ctenocephalides felis felis in a simulated home environment. ANIMALS: 3 matched groups of 4 cats each. PROCEDURE: A self-propagating flea life cycle continuously exposing cats to 'natural' infestation was established in 3 pens. Small artificial infestations were later superimposed to mimic the effect of a cat roaming outdoors and acquiring extraneous fleas. One pen housed an untreated control group, and the other 2 pens housed cat

Bartonella henselae is a causative agent of cat scratch disease in Australia.

We report the first isolation of Bartonella henselae from the blood and fleas of a cat of a patient with cat scratch disease (CSD) in Australia. A 49-year-old man presented with a history that 3 weeks after he had removed fleas from his cat he had developed fever, lethargy and anorexia for 3 days. This was followed by the appearance of axillary lymphadenopathy. There was no history of a bite or scratch and no primary lesion on the skin. Two fine needle aspirates of the axillary lymph node showed granulomatous lymphadenitis with no organisms seen by Warthin-Starry silver staining or electron mi

Animal and human tungiasis-related knowledge and treatment practices among animal keeping households in Bugiri District, South-Eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic tungiasis caused by Tunga penetrans remains a serious public and animal health problem among endemic villages in Uganda and many sub Saharan African countries. Studies on human and animal tungiasis-related knowledge and treatment practices in endemic communities have never been undertaken, a limitation to development of sustainable control measures. METHODS: A cross sectional study using semi-structured questionnaires (Supplementary file S1) was conducted among 236 animal rearing households in 10 endemic villages in Bugiri District, South-Eastern Uganda. Evidence of antibodies to spotted fever group rickettsiae in small mammals and quail from Mississippi.

Rickettsia parkeri is a recently recognized human pathogen primarily associated with the Gulf Coast tick Amblyomma maculatum, with immature stages of this tick reported from wild vertebrates. To better understand the role of vertebrates in the natural history of this bacterium, we evaluated small mammals and ground-dwelling birds for evidence of infection with R. parkeri or exposure to the organism. We sampled small mammals (n=39) and passerines (n=47) in both north-central and southeast Mississippi, while northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) samples (n=31) were obtained from farms in centr

An immunotherapeutic treatment against flea allergy dermatitis in cats by co-immunization of DNA and protein vaccines.

Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is considered a harmful and persistent allergic disease in cats, dogs and humans. Effective and safe antigen-specific treatments are lacking. Previously we reported that the simultaneous co-immunization with a DNA vaccine and its cognate coded protein antigen could induce antigen-specific iTreg cells (inducible Treg cells); demonstrating its potential to protect animals from FAD in a murine model. Its clinical efficacy however, remains to be demonstrated. In this report, we clinically tested this protocol to treat established FAD in cats following flea infestation

Meningitis due to a "Bartonella washoensis"-like human pathogen.

We report the second human case of infection caused by an organism identified as the proposed Bartonella species, "B. washoensis." The organism was isolated from a blood sample from a patient presenting with meningitis and early sepsis. Oropsylla montana fleas were implicated as the vector for disease transmission in this case.

Molecular evidence for Bartonella spp. in cat and dog fleas from Germany and France.

Nine hundred and fifty-two fleas were collected from 148 cats and 133 dogs at 18 widely distributed geographic locations in Germany and France and examined for the presence of six different Bartonella spp. (Bartonella bacilliformis, Bartonella clarridgeiae, Bartonella elizabethae, Bartonella henselae, Bartonella quintana, Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii) by PCR. Thirty-five specimens (3.7%) tested positive for either B. henselae (14 positive fleas) or B. clarridgeiae (21 positive fleas). DNA of other Bartonella spp. were not detected. Bartonella clarridgeiae was the dominating species in

Progress and opportunities in the development of vaccines against mites, fleas and myiasis-causing flies of veterinary importance.

Despite the potential benefits offered by vaccination against ectoparasites, there have been few commercial successes with this strategy, in spite of sustained efforts using increasingly sophisticated techniques. This review outlines the progress and challenges offered by recent research into vaccination against some of the major ectoparasites of veterinary importance, and provides an insight into the opportunities arising from our increased understanding of the immunology of host-parasite relationships and the potential for exploitation of this knowledge and that arising from new genomic data

No evidence of persistent Yersina pestis infection at prairie dog colonies in north-central Montana.

Sylvatic plague is a flea-borne zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which can cause extensive mortality among prairie dogs (Cynomys) in western North America. It is unclear whether the plague organism persists locally among resistant host species or elsewhere following epizootics. From June to August 2002 and 2003 we collected blood and flea samples from small mammals at prairie dog colonies with a history of plague, at prairie dog colonies with no history of plague, and from off-colony sites where plague history was unknown. Blood was screened for antibody to Y. pestis b

Predictive thresholds for plague in Kazakhstan.

In Kazakhstan and elsewhere in central Asia, the bacterium Yersinia pestis circulates in natural populations of gerbils, which are the source of human cases of bubonic plague. Our analysis of field data collected between 1955 and 1996 shows that plague invades, fades out, and reinvades in response to fluctuations in the abundance of its main reservoir host, the great gerbil (Rhombomys opimus). This is a rare empirical example of the two types of abundance thresholds for infectious disease-invasion and persistence- operating in a single wildlife population. We parameterized predictive models th

[The present status of the conquest of tropical Africa by Pulex irritans Linnaeus, 1758].

Owing to human parasites, two fleas, namely Pulex irritans Linné, 1758 and Tunga penetrans (L., 1758) were brought from America to intertropical Africa. The conquest of Africa by Pulex irritans, was really effective since the fifties, evidently by european strains. Some examples selected in occidental and oriental Africa show the reality of this fact. Accordingly, the epidemiological modalities in plague's african foci can be strongly changed.

Efficacy and safety of a combination of selamectin plus sarolaner for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations and the treatment of ear mites in cats presented as veterinary patients in the United States.

Two randomised, single-masked, multi-center field studies were conducted in the United States in cats presented as veterinary patients. The first study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a topically applied formulation of selamectin plus sarolaner (Revolution® Plus/Stronghold® Plus, Zoetis) against natural flea infestations; the second study evaluated its efficacy against natural ear mite infestations. The product was administered topically by the cats' owners at the dose range provided in the market product of 6.0-12.0 mg selamectin and 1.0-2.0 mg sarolaner per kg bodyweight. Imidacloprid p

Plague: history and contemporary analysis.

Plague has caused ravaging outbreaks, including the Justinian plague and the "black death" in the Middle Ages. The causative agents of these outbreaks have been confirmed using modern molecular tests. The vector of plague during pandemics remains the subject of controversy. Nowadays, plague must be suspected in all areas where plague is endemic in rodents when patients present with adenitis or with pneumonia with a bloody expectorate. Diagnosis is more difficult in the situation of the reemergence of plague, as in Algeria for example, told by the first physician involved in that outbreak (NM).
