Multiple abdominal abscesses - A not so common presentation of NTM.

Non-tuberculous Mycobacteria/Mycobacterium other than tuberculosis (MOTT) are ubiquitous organisms. They are acid fast bacilli often giving trouble to the physician to distinguish it from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These organisms are a menace for the treating physician as when to treat and when not to treat. They are often difficult to diagnose and may present in a variety of forms with propensity to cause number of infections of different body parts and organs. They are more common in immunocompromised individuals e.g. HIV infection. Here we are reporting a not so common manifestation of NT

[A case of appendceal cancer with abdominal, intraabdominal, and retroperitoneal abscesses].

A 65-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital owing to difficulty walking and an abdominal tumor in the right lower abdomen. An irregular mass with calcification was detected in her cecum, and abdominal, intraabdominal, and retroperitoneal abscess was detected by computed tomography(CT). An irregular mass was diagnosed as Group 5 adenocarcinoma by biopsy. After the inflammation improved by abscess drainage, we conducted ileocecal resection and fenestrated the abscess. Pathological analysis showed well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma: dimensions 20 × 20 mm, pSS, stroma: med, INF a, ly1

Treatment of post-appendectomy intra-abdominal deep abscesses.

The treatment of acute appendicitis in children is sometimes followed by complications including intra-abdominal abscess, for which the traditional treatment is surgical drainage. We evaluated the efficacy of antibiotic management compared to classic surgical treatment. This retrospective study investigated 22 children from 5 to 13 years of age with one or many abscesses after appendectomy, treated between 1992 and 2002. Eleven received surgery and the other 11 were treated with triple antibiotherapy. The two groups were comparable. Surgery was efficient in 36% of cases and complications occur

Laparoscopic drainage of postoperative complicated intra-abdominal abscesses.

Intra-abdominal abscess, which carries significant rates of death and complications, may complicate the postoperative course. Treatment options include percutaneous needle aspiration, placement of an external drain under ultrasonic guidance, or surgical drainage, depending on the size, site, and nature (simple or complicated) of the abscess. Laparoscopic drainage may be a treatment option. A retrospective review of patients who underwent laparoscopic drainage of postoperative complicated intra-abdominal abscesses at the authors' institution from January 1997 to July 1999 was performed. Seven p

Abdominal pregnancy with lithopedion formation presenting as a pelvic abscess.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pregnancy with lithopedion formation is rare and its presentation as a pelvic abscess has not been reported. CASE: A 38-year-old, gravida 1, para 0, presented with signs and symptoms of a pelvic abscess, which turned out to be a lithopedion from a 16-week abdominal pregnancy that had been terminated by a potassium chloride injection 2 years earlier. Intravenous antibiotics were followed by surgical removal of the lithopedion. CONCLUSION: Pelvic abscess is an added complication of a lithopedion. Surgical removal to prevent such complications can be considered, balanced a

Abdominal tuberculous abscesses in AIDS patients: percutaneous treatment.

OBJECTIVE: to analyze certain epidemiological and ultrasonographic features, and the response to percutaneous treatment, of abdominal tuberculous abscesses in patients with human acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. METHODS: we reviewed the clinical records and ultrasonographic findings in 7 patients with abdominal tuberculous abscesses who were treated in our service by ultrasonography-guided percutaneous drainage. RESULTS: in 5 patients there was a previous diagnosis of AIDS. The abscesses (two in one patient) were located mainly in the retroperitoneum and appeared mottled at ultrasonograph

Abdominal abscesses associated with enteric fistulas: percutaneous management.

For many years, surgical dictum stated abdominal fistulas should be treated by means of surgical excision. Recent advances in percutaneous techniques have altered this. The authors reviewed 150 consecutive abdominal abscesses drained percutaneously over a 36-month period. Among these, 24 patients were found to have 26 fistulous communications to bowel, the pancreatic duct, or the biliary system. Initial drainage of their abscesses was performed in the hospital, but 17 of 24 patients were discharged with a tube in place and were followed up as outpatients. The duration of drainage ranged from 4

CT of abdominal abscess with fistulous communication to the gastrointestinal tract.

We review CT of 24 cases of intraabdominal abscess with fistulous communication to the GI tract confirmed by GI contrast study or fistulogram. Underlying causes of fistulization included recent GI tract surgery (13), diverticulitis (four), unknown etiology (three), malignant neoplasm (two), trauma (one), and pancreatitis (one). Thirteen (54%) abscesses showed air-fluid levels, 14 (58%) showed air bubbles, and seven (29%) showed both. Bowel contrast material was administered in 21 cases, and optimal bowel opacification was effected in 16. However, contrast extravasation into the abscess was not

[Patent urachus associated with abdominal abscess: report of a case].

A case of the patent urachus associated with abdominal abscess was reported. A 44-year-old woman was consulted to our clinic with the complaints of bladder irritability and discharge from the navel on October 27, 1987. A fist-sized tumor around the umbilicus was pointed out and the cystography from the umbilicus demonstrated that the contrast medium reached to the urinary bladder. The cystoscopy showed the protruded lesion on the dome of the bladder. The pre-operative diagnosis was patent urachus. She received resection of the urachus on November 11, 1987. The pathological finding was pyogenic

Immune mechanisms in the prevention of intra-abdominal abscess formation.

Bacteroides fragilis is the most commonly isolated anaerobe from intraabdominal infections. In experimental models of intraabdominal sepsis, B. fragilis has been shown to be uniquely virulent. Some of these virulence traits are due to the capsular polysaccharide of this organism. Immunity to infection secondary to B. fragilis seems to involve both arms of the immune system. Humoral immunity (complement, antibody and PMNs) is critical to clearance of these bacteria from the blood stream. Cellular immune mechanisms predominate against intraabdominal abscess formation. Adoptive transfer experimen

Intestinal bacteria translocate into experimental intra-abdominal abscesses.

Experimental intra-abdominal abscesses were initiated by surgical implantation of a fibrin clot contaminated with either Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, or B fragilis-Escherichia coli. Seven days after surgery the numbers of bacteroides (per gram) in B fragilis and B thetaiotaomicron abscesses were typically log10 8.4 +/- 0.5 (n = 6) and log10 6.4 +/- 0.6 (n = 4), respectively; B fragilis-E coli abscesses typically contained log10 8.9 +/- 0.5 B fragilis and log10 7.6 +/- 0.6 E coli (n = 5). Of 38 B fragilis abscesses, 14 B fragilis-E coli abscesses, and nine B thetaiotaomic

[The accuracy of ultrasound in the diagnosis of intra-abdominal abscess formations].

During the last two years 73 patients with a total number of 84 abdominal abscesses have been investigated by ultrasound. Two thirds of the patients (67%) had postoperative abscesses. Spontaneous abscesses occurred in the remaining 33%. Multiple abscesses occurred in the postoperative group only (7 patients). The overall sensitivity in detecting an abscess was 84%. The sensitivity was much better with spontaneous abscesses (92%) than with postoperative abscesses (80%). One third of the patients have also been investigated by computed tomography. The diagnosis was confirmed either by needle asp

Internal abdominal abscesses in the horse: a study of 25 cases.

internal abdominal abscesses in 25 horses, including 8 horses that died or were euthanatized, were found to be caused by Streptococcus equi, Streptococcus zooepidemicus, or Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Breed or sex predilection was not found. Although horses of all ages were affected, those under 5 years of age were more commonly affected. Nearly all of the horses had a history of respiratory catarrh or lymphadenitis. Horses with internal abdominal abscesses also had intermittent, prolonged colic or chronic weight loss. Most horses had increased rectal temperature, increased heart and r

[The sonographic-radiological diagnosis of abdominal abscesses (author's transl)].

The sonographic-radiological diagnosis of abdominal abscesses is discussed; these are divided into intraparenchymal, extra-parenchymal-intraperitoneal and extraparenchymal-extraperitoneal lesions. The results of grey scle sonography are most informative and are correlated with the radiological and scintigraphic findings in 25 patients. In addition to the advantages of economy and of a non-invasive method, ultrasound permits aimed fine-needle aspiration of pathological abdominal processes such as abscesses.
