Imaging of abdominal hernias.

Abdominal hernias are a common clinical problem. The main types of abdominal hernias are external or abdominal wall hernias, which involve protrusion of abdominal contents through a defect in the abdominal wall; internal hernias, which involve protrusion of viscera through the peritoneum or mesentery and into a compartment in the abdominal cavity; and diaphragmatic hernias, which involve protrusion of abdominal contents into the chest. Clinical diagnosis of abdominal hernias can be difficult. However, plain radiography, radiography performed after administration of barium, and computed tomogra

Intra-abdominal inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma associated with paraneoplastic pemphigus: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUD: Follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcomas are rare neoplasms that occur predominantly in the lymph nodes. They can also occur extranodally. Extranodal FDC sarcomas most commonly present as solitary masses. Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT)-like FDC sarcomas, a subcategory of FDC sarcomas, are rarer than other sarcoma subtypes. They are composed of spindle or ovoid neoplastic cells and exhibit an admixture of plasma cells and prominent lymphoplasmacytic infiltration. Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP), also known as paraneoplastic autoimmune multiorgan syndrome, is a rare autoimmune bullous

Metastasis of the abdominal wall in a patient with diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma: An interesting finding.

Tumors of the abdominal wall are rare, divided into benign and malignant lesions that are composed of primary tumors and by the parietal invasion of intra-abdominal tumors and metastatic parietal implants. In the case of metastases in the abdominal wall, the most frequent are metastases from neoplasms of colonic origin. The case described below is that of a 68-year-old patient with a history of stage IIA left lung adenocarcinoma who received partial response radiotherapy with an indication for chemotherapy, which she refused and lost follow-up.

[Incidental finding of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms].

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) are rare and are diagnosed in at least 0.13% of appendectomies in Germany, although significant underreporting is likely. Perforation of the tumors can result in abdominal mucinous collections, so-called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). The challenge in the treatment of LAMN is the adequate approach to the incidental finding of these tumors. If a mucinous neoplasm is preoperatively suspected in cases of an acute condition, usually appendicitis, it must be weighed up whether a conservative approach is justifiable or whether immediate appendectomy is

[Traumatic Neuroma Mimicking Lymph Node Metastasis of Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasms Developed after Pancreatoduodenectomy-A Case Report].

A traumatic neuroma is a benign tumor consisting of a non-neoplastic growth of injured nerves as a result of trauma or surgery. It is rarely found in an abdominal cavity, but some reports showed that it occurred around the bile duct. We report a case of a 72-year-old man who underwent subtotal stomach-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy for pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms 4 years ago. An abdominal contrast-enhanced CT follow-up examination revealed a growing nodule on the dorsal surface of the portal vein. The lesion showed a mild increase in fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in FDG-PET⊘CT. A lymph n

Angiographic differentiation of thoracic aneurysms and neoplasms.

The distinction between nondissecting aneuryms of the thoracic aorta and thoracic neoplasms may be difficult. The aortographic findings associated with aneurysms may be subtle. However, when the aortogram is properly performed and interpreted and the findings correlated with the plain chest roentgenograms the distinction between aneurysms and neoplasms may be made consistently. The thoracic aortogram should be filmed in at least 2 projections and abdominal aortography and ultrasonography should be performed. With aneurysms the aortographic signs include widening (often slight) of the aortic lu

Pseudomyxoma peritonei of appendiceal origin mimicking ovarian cancer - a case report with literature review.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare and uncommon condition, characterized by the presence of mucinous ascites in the abdominal cavity. The most common cause of PMP is mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix, followed by neoplasms of the ovary, endocervix, fallopian tube, alimentary organs, urachus, urinary bladder, lung, mucinous cyst of the spleen, and breast. Herein, we report a case of a 64-year-old postmenopausal woman (gravida 2, para 2) who presented at the department of gynecology with a short history of nausea and abdominal distention. Abdominal and vaginal ultrasonography showed a

Neutropenic enterocolitis. A new complication of head and neck cancer chemotherapy.

Neutropenic enterocolitis is a recognized complication of immunosuppression or chemotherapy for leukemia. It presents as severe abdominal pain and tenderness, fever, and diarrhea associated with granulocytopenia. Gastrointestinal symptoms associated with chemotherapy for head and neck neoplasms include nausea and emesis, but not acute abdominal distress. We present, to our knowledge, the first case of neutropenic enterocolitis in a patient receiving cisplatin and fluorouracil chemotherapy for metastatic head and neck cancer.

Adenocarcinoma of the urachus.

During the past 5 years, three patients with adenocarcinoma of the urachus were treated at our hospital. Abdominal ultrasonography helped clinch the diagnosis in all cases. All patients underwent surgical excision of the neoplasm with partial cystectomy. The clinical, radiological, and histological findings, as well as the pathogenesis of this rare neoplasm are discussed along with the surgical management.

The Clinical and Pathologic Features of Intracholecystic Papillary-Tubular Neoplasms of the Gallbladder.

Intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasm denotes a discrete mucosal-based neoplastic proliferation into the gallbladder lumen. It is diagnosed incidentally during cholecystectomy or radiologically during a workup for abdominal pain. The majority of polypoid lesions in the gallbladder are non-neoplastic; therefore, pathologic examination is the gold standard to establish this diagnosis. Intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasm is considered as premalignant, although associated invasive carcinomas may be present in the specimen. Invasive carcinoma arising from intracholecystic papillary-tu

Intestinal autotransplantation.

Most abdominal neoplasms involving the root of the superior mesenteric artery and/or celiac artery are difficult to manage with conventional operative techniques because of limited intestinal ischemia times and poor accessibility to the tumor region. Ex vivo surgery followed by intestinal autotransplantation (IATx) is a relatively novel surgical strategy to offer chances for complete resection in such hopeless circumstances. This review aims to assess potential surgical indications, operative techniques and clinical outcomes after IATx. Currently the main indications reported for IATx broadly

Uterine carcinosarcoma due to foreign body (migrated intrauterine device): an extremely rare etiology of gynecological neoplasm.

INTRODUCTION: Uterine carcinosarcomas are extremely rare gynecological neoplasms. The coexistence of intraabdominal foreign bodies, such as migrated IUDs, and uterine neoplasms, particularly carcinosarcomas, represents a significant clinical challenge and infrequent association. Chronic inflammation associated with foreign bodies can act as a cofactor in carcinogenesis and explain the appearance of these tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old woman with a history of cesarean section, presented to the emergency department with a 5-day complaint of abdominal pain, nausea and constipation. An

Actinomycosis of cecum associated with entamoeba infection mimicking perforated colon cancer.

Actinomycosis is a granulomatous disease caused by Actinomyces that mimics other intra-abdominal pathologies especially neoplasms. Correct diagnosis can be rarely established before radical surgery. On the other hand Entamoeba infection affects a considerable number of people worldwide. To our knowledge only one case has been reported to be affected by both organisms. We report a man who has been operated for a mass in the cecum mimicking a perforated colon cancer. Abdominal CT revealed a mass with features of an invading neoplasm. After radical surgery, definitive pathology revealed that the

Incarcerated umbilical hernia as the debut of abdominal actinomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare infection with a difficult diagnosis that can simulate multiple surgical scenarios such as neoplasms or complications of inflammatory bowel disease. CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a 69-year-old female who underwent emergency surgery due to a difficult and painful tumor, suggesting an incarcerated umbilical hernia. Whitish lesions were discovered in the abdominal wall and a stenotic colonic mass was managed similar to a neoplasm. Anatomopathological study showed abdominal actinomycosis, requiring a lengthy course with penicillin. CONCLUSION

Ascitic fluid cytology in a case of metastatic malignant mixed mesodermal tumor of the ovary.

The cytologic features of the abdominal fluid from a patient with a malignant mixed mesodermal tumor (MMMT) of the ovary are presented. Both malignant epithelial and stromal elements were cytologically appreciated and confirmed by histologic examination. Other ovarian neoplasms that can present with malignant sarcomatous elements or mixed epithelial and sarcomatous elements are discussed; this case documents the importance of recognizing these features when staging patients with unusual ovarian neoplasms. To our knowledge, this is the first complete report of the ascitic fluid cytology of an M
