Minimum cuticular conductance and cuticle features of Picea abies and Pinus cembra needles along an altitudinal gradient in the Dolomites (NE Italian Alps).

Winter desiccation is believed to contribute to stress in coniferous trees growing at the treeline because cuticular conductance increases with altitude. To test whether winter desiccation occurs in high-altitude conifers of the Dolomites (NE Italian Alps), we measured minimum cuticular conductance (g(min)), needle wettability (contact angle) and cuticle thickness in Picea abies (L.) Karst. and Pinus cembra L. needles from December to August. Samples were collected from adult trees along an altitudinal gradient from valley bottom (1050 m a.s.l.) to the treeline (2170 m a.s.l.). The treeline si

[Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals in Twigs and Leaves of Abies fabri at Mount Gongga in China: A Comparison Study Between 1999 and 2014].

The rapid economy growth led to the environmental carrying capacity reaching the maximum level.Given that the time changing trend of heavy metal pollution in the remote forest ecosystems has rarely been reported, we reported the differences of Pb, Hg, Cd, As, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn and bioaccumulation in twigs and leaves of fir(Abies fabri) between samples collected in 1999 and 2014 at the Mt. Gongga, which was located at eastern Tibet Plateau. Our results suggested that the concentrations of Pb, Hg, As, Cd, Mn and Cu in the samples collected in 1999 were significantly higher than those collected in 2

Galactoglucomannan-rich hemicellulose extract from Norway spruce (Picea abies) exerts beneficial effects on chronic prostatic inflammation and lower urinary tract symptoms in vivo.

Galactoglucomannan (GGM) is the main hemicellulose class in wood of coniferous trees and could be potentially utilized as a possible health-promoting substance for food and pharmaceutical industry. Our aim was to evaluate effects of orally administered GGM-rich extract from Norway spruce in a rat model of chronic prostatitis associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Prostatic inflammation and LUTS was induced in male rats using testosterone and 17β-estradiol exposure for 18 weeks. Rats were treated with 2% GGM dissolved in drinking water during weeks 13-18. Pelvic pain response, LUT

Utility of ABI and API Versus CTA to Identify Surgically Significant Arterial Injury After Lower Extremity Trauma in a LMIC.

BACKGROUND: South Africa faces a high burden of trauma-related vascular injury. Prompt diagnosis and management are crucial to limit morbidity and mortality. Literature recommends a thorough vascular examination of at-risk patients. Ankle brachial index (ABI) and arterial pressure index (API) are considered reliable screening tools for lower extremity vascular injury (LEVI) in the correct clinical scenario. Patients with an abnormal ABI/API warrant diagnostic imaging with computed tomography angiography (CTA). However, recent international literature demonstrates a trend toward potential CTA o

Effect of Disturbance on Population Structure and Regeneration of Abies fargesii var. faxoniana (Rehder & E.H.Wilson): Mild Disturbance Promotes Growth, Severe Disturbance Leads to Decline.

Plant population structure and regeneration are effected by species traits, environmental conditions, and anthropogenic disturbance. Abies fargesii var. faxoniana (Rehder & E.H.Wilson), As a major constructive tree species in extreme high-altitude habitats on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the population structure, regeneration status, and development trends under different disturbance intensities remain unclear. We established plots of A. faxoniana natural forests under varying disturbance levels (seven each for mild, moderate, and severe disturbance), investigated population age s
