Radiation-induced valvular disease is the logical consequence of irradiation.

Mediastinal irradiation has been reported to induce cardiac diseases such as pericardial disease, accelerated arteriosclerosis of the coronary arteries, valvular disease, conduction abnormalities, and calcification of the aorta. We experienced four cases of radiation-induced valvular disease. All patients had histories of radiation therapy and had aortic valve disease. All patients had marked fibrosis of the mediastinum and hypertrophy of pericardium. The aortic valve leaflets were tricuspid and fibrotic with focal dystrophic calcification and markedly thickened. In the pathological findings,

Mechanism of teratogenesis: electron transfer, reactive oxygen species, and antioxidants.

Teratogenesis has been a topic of increasing interest and concern in recent years, generating controversy in association with danger to humans and other living things. A veritable host of chemicals is known to be involved, encompassing a wide variety of classes, both organic and inorganic. Contact with these chemicals is virtually unavoidable due to contamination of air, water, ground, food, beverages, and household items, as well as exposure to medicinals. The resulting adverse effects on reproduction are numerous. There is uncertainty regarding the mode of action of these chemicals, although

Prenatal radiation exposure: background material for counseling pregnant patients following exposure to radiation.

Fetal sensitivity to radiation-induced health effects is related to gestational age, and it is highly dependent on fetal dose. Typical fetal doses from diagnostic radiology are usually below any level of concern. Although rare, significant fetal radiation doses can result from interventional medical exposures (fluoroscopically guided techniques), radiation therapy, or radiological or nuclear incidents, including terrorism. The potential health effects from these large radiation doses (possibly large enough to result in acute radiation syndrome in the expectant mother) include growth retardatio

Astragaloside IV alleviates radiation-induced heart disease by regulating energy metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD) has emerged as a critical complication compromising the long-term survival of cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Although targeting myocardial energy metabolism is a promising therapeutic strategy for cardiovascular diseases, the molecular mechanisms underlying ionizing radiation-induced cardiomyocyte metabolic dysregulation and subsequent cardiac injury remain unclear. PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the mechanism by which Astragaloside IV (AS-Ⅳ) alleviates RIHD through the regulation of energy metabolism. METHODS: This study esta

Metformin Ameliorates 2.856 GHz Microwave- Radiation-Induced Reproductive Impairments in Male Rats via Inhibition of Oxidative Stress and Apoptosis.

The reproductive system has been increasingly implicated as a sensitive target of microwave radiation. Oxidative stress plays a critical role in microwave radiation -induced reproductive damage, though precise mechanisms are obscure. Metformin, a widely used antidiabetic drug, has emerged as an efficient antioxidant against a variety of oxidative injuries. In the present study, we hypothesized that metformin can function as an antioxidant and protect the reproductive system from microwave radiation. To test this hypothesis, rats were exposed to 2.856 GHz microwave radiation for 6 weeks to simu

Health impacts of large releases of radionuclides. Biological effects of prenatal irradiation.

After large releases of radionuclides, exposure of the embryo or fetus can take place by external irradiation or uptake of radionuclides. The embryo and fetus are radiosensitive throughout prenatal development. The quality and extent of radiation effects depend on the developmental stage. During the preimplantation period (one to 10 days postconception, p.c.), a radiation exposure of at least 0.2 Gy can cause the death of the embryo. Malformations are only observed in rare cases when genetic predispositions exist. Macroscopic, anatomical malformations are induced only after irradiation during

Clinical validation of the LKB model and parameter sets for predicting radiation-induced pneumonitis from breast cancer radiotherapy.

The choice of the appropriate model and parameter set in determining the relation between the incidence of radiation pneumonitis and dose distribution in the lung is of great importance, especially in the case of breast radiotherapy where the observed incidence is fairly low. From our previous study based on 150 breast cancer patients, where the fits of dose-volume models to clinical data were estimated (Tsougos et al 2005 Evaluation of dose-response models and parameters predicting radiation induced pneumonitis using clinical data from breast cancer radiotherapy Phys. Med. Biol. 50 3535-54),

Low dose or low dose rate ionizing radiation-induced health effect in the human.

The extensive literature review on human epidemiological studies suggests that low dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) (≤100 mSv) or low dose rate ionizing radiation (LDRIR) (<6mSv/H) exposure could induce either negative or positive health effects. These changes may depend on genetic background, age (prenatal day for embryo), sex, nature of radiation exposure, i.e., acute or chronic irradiation, radiation sources (such as atomic bomb attack, fallout from nuclear weapon test, nuclear power plant accidents, 60Co-contaminated building, space radiation, high background radiation, medical examinations

Cytogenetic abnormalities in lymphocytes from victims exposed to cobalt-60 radiation.

The present study investigates cytogenetic damage in lymphocytes, derived from three victims who were unfortunately exposed to cobalt-60 (60Co) radiation (the 1999 accident occurred in a village in China's Henan province). Case A of the three victims was exposed to a higher dose of 60Co radiation than Cases B and C. The chromosomal aberrations, cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN, the CBMN assay), and DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs, the comet assay) examined in this study are biomarkers for cytogenetic abnormalities. After the lymphocytes collected from the victims were cultured, the frequenc

Gemcitabine-induced pericardial effusion and tamponade after unblocked cardiac irradiation.

Gemcitabine therapy has been associated with radiation recall reactions when used in the treatment of carcinoma. We report four cases of hemodynamically significant pericardial effusion in patients with refractory lymphoma who were receiving gemcitabine, all of whom had a history of mediastinal radiation without subcarinal blocking. All four patients had pericardial abnormalities on echocardiography prior to receiving gemcitabine. Two patients required emergent surgical procedures. Of twenty other patients in our practice who received gemcitabine for refractory lymphoma without developing peri

Effects of gestational exposure to a video display terminal-like magnetic field (20-kHz) on CBA/S mice.

Possible adverse effects of magnetic fields (MFs) on reproduction have been an open question. To verify the embryo-lethal effect of pulsed MF of the type emitted by video display terminals (VDTs) reported previously in CBA/S mice, a developmental toxicity study was conducted in animals of the same origin. Mated CBA/S mice (80-86 pregnant animals per group) were exposed to a 20-kHz MF with sawtooth waveform continuously from gestational day 0-18. The flux density of the vertical MF was 15 microT peak-to-peak (150 mG). This field was previously reported to increase the number of resorptions in C

Postnatal development of the rat CNS following in utero exposure to a low dose of ionizing radiation.

In utero exposure to ionizing radiation is of importance because of its potential health risks. The developing nervous system is particularly vulnerable and the consequences of exposure to low levels of radiation (< or = 1 Gy) are not well established. The developmental effects of maternal exposure to 50 cGy gamma-radiation on gestational days (GD) 9.5, 15, and 18 were investigated in Sprague Dawley rats. Rats exposed on GD-9.5 along with appropriate controls were killed at 4 h, 48 h, and 10 days post-irradiation while those irradiated on GD-15 and GD-18 were killed postnatally (PN) on days 7

[Analysis of congenital malformations in newborns].

We analyzed data from 194 newborns with congenital malformations of central nervous, cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, skeletal, genito-urinary systems and Down's syndrome. We detected that the highest frequency of congenital malformations occurred from may 1986 to december 1986. Congenital malformations were detected more frequently in female newborns and newborns delivered by multipara. The percentage of CNS malformations was constant but at the same time the number of other malformations were significantly changed. We made an attempt of statistical analysis of frequency and type of malform

[Effects of exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields on reproduction of female mice and development of offsprings].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF EMFs) on pregnant mice and development of offsprings. METHODS: Female mice were exposed to 50 Hz, 1.2 mT electromagnetic fields during the whole pregnant period (8 h/d). The body weight of dams, delivery and development of offsprings were observed and measured. RESULTS: The increase of body weight of exposed dams (29.0%) was significantly slower than that of the control group (47.8%) during late pregnancy period (P < 0.05). The producing rate of exposed group was 60% of that of control group.

Genetic monitoring of the human population from high-level natural radiation areas of Kerala on the southwest coast of India. I. Prevalence of congenital malformations in newborns.

In the densely populated monazite-bearing sands of Kerala, on the southwest coast of India, natural radiation dose rates range from 1. 0 to over 35.0 mGy per year in certain well-defined high-level natural radiation areas. As a part of the program to assess the health effects of this naturally occurring high-level natural radiation on human populations, monitoring of newborns is being undertaken to determine the incidence of congenital malformations. From August 1995 to December 1998, a total of 36,805 newborns were screened, including 212 (0.58%) stillbirths. There were 36,263 singletons, 536

Radiation exposure of fertile women in medical research studies.

Fertile women may be exposed to ionizing radiation as human subjects in medical research studies. If the woman is pregnant, such exposures may result in risk to an embryo/fetus. Fertile women may be screened for pregnancy before exposure to ionizing radiation by interview, general examination, or pregnancy test. Use of the sensitive serum pregnancy test has become common because it offers concrete evidence that the woman is not pregnant (more specifically, that an embryo is not implanted). Evidence suggests that risk to the embryo from radiation exposure before organogenesis is extremely low o

Radiation-induced lung disease and the impact of radiation methods on imaging features.

Although radiologic findings in radiation-induced lung disease are well described in the literature, the influence exerted on these findings by different radiation methods is not well understood. Radiation treatment of non-small cell lung cancer varies depending on the location and extent of disease. Irradiation with oblique beam angles results in unusual distribution of radiation-induced lung disease. Small cell lung cancer is treated with irradiation concurrent with or following chemotherapy, and portal arrangements are controversial. In breast cancer, use of tangential beam portals may indu
