CONTEXT: Thirty-seven states have laws in effect that mandate parental involvement in adolescent abortion decisions. Little is known about minors' opinions of parental involvement laws.
METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 minors presenting for an abortion at one of three Chicago-area clinics in 2010. Interviewers described the Illinois parental notification law (which was passed in 1995 but is not in effect because of legal challenges) and a corresponding judicial bypass option to the minors and asked their opinions about them. Time plays a fundamental role in abortion regulation. In this article, we compare the regulatory frameworks in England and Wales and the Netherlands as examples of the centrality accorded to viability in the determination of the parameters of non-criminal abortion, demonstrating that the use of viability as a threshold renders the law uncertain. We assess the role played by the concept of viability, analysing its impact upon the continued criminalization of abortion and categorization of abortion as a medical matter, rather than a reproductive choice. Abortion counseling, including informed consent laws specifying what a woman must be told to obtain an abortion, have been the subject of a great deal of social policy. Except for in Mexico City, abortion is legally restricted throughout Mexico, and unsafe abortion is prevalent. We surveyed 1,516 women seeking abortions in San Diego, California. After a short description of the most important echographic pictures for diagnosis of spontaneous abortion in the first trimester, the clinical development in 89 patients with threatened abortion symptoms, is examined. The interruption of pregnancy has been predicted in 97,05% of the cases resulted in abortion and normal prosecution of pregnancy in 98,18% with regular outcome. These results are very reassuring and no doubt more reliable than pregnancy-test, which for its prompt applicability, may be compared with echographic examination.

According to strictly defined criteria a differential diagnosis between regular pregnancy, imminent abortion, missed abortion, incomplete abortion or hydatidiform mole is attempted using 385 basic ultrasound tests carried out from the 6th to the 16th week of pregnancy. The diagnostic procedure, its pitfalls, their reasons and possibilities of avoidance are discussed. In spite of the wide area of application the positive score of 92% in all basic tests is stressed. Comparing these findings with HCG tests the ultrasound method is clearly superior.

747 cases of ultrasonic B-scan examinations carried out over 528 patients, in threatened or deranged stage of early gestation, are reported, and this method is hereby recommended in therapeutic check-ups of imminent abortions. Concerning cases of missed abortion it is established on the basis of individual materials and other publications that the ultrasonic technique cannot be presently substituted by any other methods. The application of ultrasonic B-scan for the diagnosis and exclusive diagnosis of hydatidiform mole, ectopic pregnancy and incomplete abortions is discussed.
