Mucormycosis.

The term mucormycosis encompasses a distinctive group of infections caused by fungi belonging to genera within the taxonomic order Mucorales, usually Rhizopus, Absidia, Mortierella, and Mucor. These fungi are widespread in nature, subsisting on decaying vegetation and diverse organic materials. Although the fungi and spores of Mucorales show minimal intrinsic pathogenicity toward normal persons, they can initiate aggressive and fulminant infections under certain clinical conditions. Ketoacidotic diabetics are predisposed to rhinocerebral mucormycosis, whereas patients with leukemia or lymphoma

Treatment of intestinal and hepatic mucormycosis in an immunocompromized child.

During ALL chemotherapy, a 4-year-old patient presented with febrile neutropenia and abdominal pain. Ultrasound examinations were repeatedly normal. Computerized tomography on day 7 demonstrated appendicitis and multiple hepatic foci identified as mucormycosis (Absidia corymbifera). Successful outcome was achieved by aggressive re-surgery, long-term antifungal therapy with serum level-monitored posaconazole, and recovery of neutrophil counts. Considering the interference of posaconazole with CYP3A4, vincristine was administered during 72 hr posaconazole windows. Pediatric intestinal mucormycos

Mucormycosis in a Diabetic Patient: A Case Report with an Insight into Its Pathophysiology.

Mucormycosis is one of the most rapidly progressing and fulminant forms of fungal infection which usually begins in the nose and paranasal sinuses following inhalation of fungal spores. It is caused by organisms of the subphylum Mucormycotina, including genera as Absidia, Mucor, Rhizomucor, and Rhizopus. The incidence of mucormycosis is approximately 1.7 cases per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year. Mucormycosis affecting the maxilla is rare because of rich blood vessel supply of maxillofacial areas although more virulent fungi such as Mucor can overcome this difficulty. The common form of this in

Subacute disseminated mucormycosis in a diabetic male.

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic invasive infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. Rhizopus, Absidia, and Mucor are the most commonly encountered genera. Disease is characterized by vascular invasion, thrombosis, and tissue necrosis. Rhinocerebral disease is the most common manifestation but pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and widely disseminated forms have been reported. Pulmonary and disseminated disease are usually seen in neutropenic patients with leukemia or lymphoma. Both present as fever and unexplained pulmonary infiltrates unresponsive to antibacterials and corticoste

Chapter 7: zygomycosis.

Zygomycosis (mucormycosis) is a rare but highly invasive infection caused by fungi belonging to the order Mucorales, which includes the genera Rhizopus, Mucor, Rhizomucor, Absidia, Apophysomyces, Saksenaea, Cunninghamella, Cokeromyces and Syncephalastrum. This type of infection is usually associated with hematologic diseases, diabetic ketoacidosis and organ transplantation. The most common form of presentation is rhinocerebral mucormycosis, with or without pulmonary involvement. Pulmonary zygomycosis is more common in patients with profound, prolonged neutropenia and can present as segmental o

Microbial transformation of sampangine.

Microbial transformation studies of the antifungal alkaloid sampangine (2) have revealed that it is metabolized by a number of microorganisms. Using a standard two-stage fermentation technique, Beauvaria bassiana (ATCC 7159), Doratomyces microsporus (ATCC 16225), and Filobasidiella neoformans (ATCC 10226) produced the 4'-O-methyl-beta-glucopyranose conjugate (3), while Absidia glauca (ATCC 22752), Cunninghamella elegans (ATCC 9245), Cunninghamella species (NRRL 5695), and Rhizopus arrhizus (ATCC 11145) produced the beta-glucopyranose conjugate (4). Survival after isolated cerebral mucormycosis.

Cerebral mucormycosis is a rare disorder caused by several genera of the family Mucoraceae. The genera Rhizopus, Absidia, and Mucor are the predominant pathogenic groups. Disease caused by these organisms usually complicates an underlying chronic illness, such as diabetes mellitus or malignancy. Cerebral involvement usually occurs from an ascending infection from the paranasal sinuses via the orbit and is usually associated with poorly controlled diabetes. The pulmonary system is the most common site of infection in patients with leukemia. Isolated cerebral mucormycosis not associated with hea

The production and partial characterization of a monoclonal IgG antibody specific for moulds belonging to the order Mucorales.

A monoclonal antibody (mAb) was raised against extracellular polysaccharides from Mucor racemosus after intrasplenic immunization of mice. An indirect ELISA and a dot-blot assay were developed with this mAb. The IgG antibody was found to be very specific for all mould species tested belonging to the order of Mucorales, except species belonging to the genus Mortierella sensu stricto. No cross-reactions were observed with other moulds or yeasts. The immunoreactivity of the polysaccharides of these moulds with this mAb is based on carbohydrate epitopes, in which fucose residues probably play an i

Outbreaks of zygomycosis in hospitals.

Zygomycosis refers to a group of uncommon and frequently fatal mycoses caused by fungi of the class Zygomycetes, the organisms of which are usually found in decaying organic matter. Disease can be transmitted by the inhalation of spores or by direct inoculation on disrupted skin or mucosa. For rare diseases such as zygomycosis, two or more cases occurring in a short time should be investigated as a probable epidemic. Twelve hospital outbreaks and two pseudoepidemics caused by Zygomycetes have been cited in the English literature. The first epidemic was recorded in 1977 and the last in 2008. Ou

Mucormycoses caused by Lichtheimia species.

Mucormycoses are life-threatening infections with fungi from the order Mucorales (Mucoromycotina). Although mucormycoses are uncommon compared to other fungal infections, e.g. aspergillosis and candidiasis, the number of cases is increasing especially in immunocompromised patients. Lichtheimia (formerly Absidia) species represent the second to third most common cause of mucormycoses in Europe. This mini review presents current knowledge about taxonomy and clinical relevance of Lichtheimia species. In addition, clinical presentation and risk factors will be discussed. [Outbreak of paraventricular and ventricular mucormycosis in fattening bulls].

There is a description of mass occurrence of nine cases of acute, fatal paraventricular and ventricular mucormycosis in fattened bulls at the age of about 18 months. In the reticulum, the disease was characterized by numerous ulcerations penetrating into the submucosa. In rumen the deposits were of hemorrhagic character penetrating through a thick muscular layer into the subserosa. Hemorrhagic peritonitis was within the range of those changes. Thromboses of arteries and veins prevailed in the microscopic picture. Inflammatory reparative changes were formed by neutrophile leucocytes. Mucoraceum

Acute refractory hyperkalaemia and fatal cardiac arrest related to administration of liposomal amphotericin B.

A 36-year-old male with acute myeloid leukaemia was treated with liposomal amphotericin B for a breakthrough fungal infection with Absidia corymbifera during voriconazole and caspofungin therapy for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. Four episodes of hyperkalaemia developed with a highly probable relation to infusion of liposomal amphotericin B, of which the last episode was characterised by severe, refractory hyperkalaemia and fatal cardiac arrest. The available literature on severe hyperkalaemia and cardiac arrest during administration of both conventional and liposomal amphotericin B is revi

Isolated zygomycosis in a bought living unrelated kidney transplant.

We report the first case of zygomycosis by Absidia corymbifera, only localized in an unrelated living donor kidney was bought and transplanted in India. Zygomycosis was diagnosed 2.5 months post-transplantation, in the clinical setting of rapid transplant failure, following an episode of cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis, CMV nephritis, and acute rejection. Treatment consisted of transplantectomy. One year later, the patient is doing well, without clinical or serological evidence of persistent mycotic or virological infections. We speculate that this isolated mycotic infection originated with the

Zygomycosis.

Zygomycosis is an invasive mycotic disease caused by fungi in the class Zygomycetes. Within this class, the most common species associated with infection include Absidia corymbifera, Apophysomyces elegans, Cunninghamella bertholletiae, Rhizomucor pusillus, Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis, and Rhizopus arrhizus. These fungi all produce characteristic hyphal forms in tissue that are variable in width, produce haphazard branching, and lack septation. Although these fungi are ubiquitous in the environment, they are opportunists causing invasive disease in compromised hosts with a high mo

Experimental systemic bovine zygomycosis with reference to pathology and secretion of antigen into urine.

ELISA and immunoblotting were applied for the characterization of somatic antigens from Absidia corymbifera. Immunoblotting revealed major antigenic bands at 11 to 81 kDa. The ELISA showed some crossreactivity towards somatic antigens from other fungi. However, the crossreactivity was especially observed with somatic antigens from other fungi of the zygomycetes. The ELISA and immunoblotting assays were applied to urine samples from two groups of 3 calves each systemically infected with A. corymbifera and Aspergillus fumigatus, respectively. The immunoreactivity of the urine samples was similar

Microbiological evolution of hay and relapse in patients with farmer's lung.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies in France have shown that Absidia corymbifera and, to a lesser degree Eurotium amstelodami and Wallemia sebi, play a role in farmer's lung disease (FLD), but that Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula, classically incriminated, does not. Little is known about farmers' reactions to these fungi or the circumstances which lead to exposure. AIMS: To investigate the conditions which favour the development of these microorganisms in hay and to analyse the relation between their concentration and the risk of occurrence of FLD. METHODS: Sequential microbiological analyses of each

Mucormycosis in India: Pathophysiology and Perspectives on Treatment and Management.

Mucormycosis, also known as "black fungus," is a potentially fatal disorder that causes blurred or double vision, chest pain, and breathing problems. The introduction of novel risk factors and causative agents, as well as the problems with controlling the disease, are all significant problems with mucormycosis in India. It is most common among COVID-19 patients. Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal disease that primarily affects immunosuppressant patients, mainly caused by mold fungi of the genus mucor, rhizopus, rhizomucor, and absidia, which are in the zygomycetes class and the Mucorales order

An atypical case report of extensive mucormycotic osteomyelitis of maxilla as a consequence of post-COVID complication.

Saprophytic molds such as Mucor, Rhizopus, and Absidia cause mucormycosis, a fungal infection. These saprophytic fungi are common in the environment and have a strong proclivity for invading major blood arteries, causing tissue ischemia, necrosis, and infarction. They have been linked to immunocompromised individuals with a history of diabetic ketoacidosis, corticosteroid medication, HIV infection, malignant lymphomas, and patients currently receiving and recovering from COVID-19 treatment. The foregoing is the case of a 78-year-old COVID-19 recovered male who presented with a primary complain

Liposomal amphotericin B and surgery as successful therapy for pulmonary Lichtheimia corymbifera zygomycosis in a pediatric patient with acute promyelocytic leukemia on antifungal prophylaxis with posaconazole.

Pulmonary zygomycosis, also referred to as mucormycosis, is a fungal infection of lungs caused by fungi of the order Mucorales in the class of Zygomycetes. It is usually associated with high morbidity and mortality. Here, we report the case of a 14-year-old girl with pediatric acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) on antifungal prophylaxis with posaconazole, who developed pulmonary Lichtheimia corymbifera (formerly Absidia corymbifera) zygomycosis. She was successfully treated by means of liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) and surgery. To our knowledge, this is the first published report on pediatr
