Absorbable polyglycolide pins in fixation of displaced fractures of the radial head.

In a prospective study 24 patients with a displaced fracture of the radial head were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using absorbable polyglycolide pins, 2 mm in diameter. All patients admitted with fractures involving a quarter or more of the radial head, whether comminuted or not, were included in the study whenever there was a displacement of 2 mm or more between the fragments. The mean follow-up time was 28 months (range 15-43 months). A postoperative redisplacement of 1-3 mm between the fragments was seen in four patients with severely comminuted fractures. A transient inf

Missed Osteochondral Shear Injury of the Humeral Head Following Anterior Shoulder Dislocation - A Case Report.

CASE: Two months after anterior shoulder dislocation and spontaneous reduction, a 41-year-old man presented movement-related shoulder pain and a functional deficit. An initially missed osteochondral shearing injury of the humeral head with a Bankart lesion was diagnosed. Due to an extensive posteroinferior defect, an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using bioabsorbable chondral darts was performed. At the 1-year follow-up, magnetic resonance images showed a completely healed osteochondral fragment and the patient presented an unrestricted shoulder function. CONCLUSION: Even in miss

Ulnar Styloid Base Fracture Fixation Using Resorbable Nails and Suture.

There remains debate regarding the treatment of ulnar styloid fractures associated with distal radius fractures. We present a novel technique for basal ulnar styloid fracture fixation using absorbable pins and a suture tension band construct, leveraging the rotational stability of the tension band while minimizing impingement and hardware irritation. The procedure begins with an incision over the ulnar styloid to expose the fracture. Fracture fragments are cleared of soft tissue and reduced with a dental pick before temporary fixation with a K-wire. Absorbable nails are placed into the distal

Comparison of Absorbable Mesh Plate versus Titanium-Dynamic Mesh Plate in Reconstruction of Blow-Out Fracture: An Analysis of Long-Term Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: A blow-out fracture is one of the most common facial injuries in midface trauma. Orbital wall reconstruction is extremely important because it can cause various functional and aesthetic sequelae. Although many materials are available, there are no uniformly accepted guidelines regarding material selection for orbital wall reconstruction. METHODS: From January 2007 to August 2012, a total of 78 patients with blow-out fractures were analyzed. 36 patients received absorbable mesh plates, and 42 patients received titanium-dynamic mesh plates. Both groups were retrospectively evaluated

Medial Wall Orbital Reconstruction using Unsintered Hydroxyapatite Particles/Poly L-Lactide Composite Implants.

BACKGROUND: Poly-L-lactide materials combined with hydroxyapatite (u-HA /PLLA) have been developed to overcome the drawbacks of absorbable materials, such as radiolucency and comparably less implant strength. This study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of u-HA/PLLA material in the repair of orbital medial wall defects. METHODS: This study included 10 patients with pure medial wall blow-out fractures. The plain radiographs were taken preoperatively, immediately after, and 2 months after surgery. The computed tomography scans were performed preoperatively and 2 months after surgery. Pati

Arthroscopic Reduction and Internal Fixation of Detached Osteochondritis Dissecans Lesions Using Bioabsorbable Screws and Fibrin Glue.

Osteochondritis dissecans is a disease that may lead to disability in adolescents and young adults, with a potentially multifactorial etiology. Currently, there are numerous treatment options for osteochondritis dissecans. A variety of implants can be used for fragment fixation. Each type of implant has potential advantages and disadvantages. Our Technical Note describes the arthroscopic preparation of the bone bed, followed by microfracture, repositioning of the detached cartilage with fixation using absorbable screws, and simultaneous edge sealing with biological protein glue at the margins.

Evaluation of the histological and biomechanical properties of poly-4-hydroxybutyrate scaffold for pelvic organ prolapse, compared with polypropylene mesh in a rabbit model.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) is a biopolymer produced by Escherichia coli K12 bacteria. P4HB is fully resorbed in vivo by 18-24 months post-implantation. The aim of this study is to evaluate P4HB in the rabbit abdomen and vagina to determine that the biomechanical and histological properties are similar to the standard polypropylene mesh. Our hypothesis is that the histological and biomechanical properties of a fully absorbable graft will be similar to a lightweight polypropylene (PP) mesh when implanted in rabbit vagina and abdomen. METHODS: Sixteen (n = 16) fem

An Unusual Case of Early Dental Implant Failure in an Otherwise-Healthy Patient due to Actinomycosis.

Actinomyces species are members of normal oral flora that may give rise to a rare disease-oral actinomycosis. Presented herein is a case of early implant failure associated with actinomycosis in an otherwise healthy 43-year-old female and the treatment adopted after explantation. Clinically, 1 month after the implant placement, the peri-implant soft tissues were hyperplastic and associated with an excessive tissue reaction, bleeding, suppuration, deep probing depth, and implant mobility of #19 and #20 implants. Both implants were removed and all granulomatous tissues were thoroughly debrided.

Engineered porosity for tissue-integrating, bioresorbable lifetime-based phosphorescent oxygen sensors.

Versatile silk protein-based material formats were studied to demonstrate bioresorbable, implantable optical oxygen sensors that can integrate with the surrounding tissues. The ability to continuously monitor tissue oxygenation in vivo is desired for a range of medical applications. Silk was chosen as the matrix material due to its excellent biocompatibility, its unique chemistry that facilitates interactions with chromophores, and the potential to tune degradation time without altering chemical composition. A phosphorescent Pd (II) benzoporphyrin chromophore was incorporated to impart oxygen

The effects of cochlear implantation on middle ear function: A prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Although sound conduction mechanisms may influence by cochlear implantation (CI), it is not very clear whether, how, and to what extent these mechanisms may be influenced the pediatric population. Wideband tympanometry (WBT) is a sensitive tool to evaluate alternations in the middle ear mechanics in a wide frequency range. The current study aimed to explore CI's impacts on sound conduction across the middle ear cavity using WBT in pediatrics. METHODS: In a prospective design, 35 unilaterally implanted children (<24 months of age) with normal temporal bone anatomy were included in

Sculpting the Future of Bone: The Evolution of Absorbable Materials in Orthopedics.

The repair of bone defects remains a major clinical challenge, as autologous grafts are constrained by donor limitations and bioinert implants often necessitate secondary surgeries. Absorbable materials, including polymers, ceramics, and metals, are rapidly transforming orthopedic care by offering temporary support and synchronized degradation to match tissue regeneration. This review highlights cutting-edge advances in composite scaffolds that enhance mechanical integrity, degradation kinetics, and osteoinductivity. We further explore innovative systems integrating stimuli-responsive smart ma

Delayed orbital floor implant complications: Case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: Foreign body reaction to non-absorbable alloplastic orbital implants utilized for bony reconstruction are infrequently documented in the literature. We present the workup and surgical management of a giant cystic mass encapsulating a patient's alloplastic orbital implant, which was ultimately deemed to be a result of foreign body reaction. OBSERVATIONS: A 41-year-old male patient with distant history of a right orbital floor fracture had undergone repair with the placement of a nylon foil implant. The patient presented twenty years later with progressive ipsilateral globe proptosis a

Retro-rectus placement of bio-absorbable mesh improves patient outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There is little consensus on the ideal anatomical placement of bio-absorbable mesh. We hypothesized that retro-rectus placement of bio-absorbable mesh would significantly reduce recurrence rates when compared to intraperitoneal mesh placement. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients who underwent open complex ventral hernia repair using bio-absorbable mesh (Bio-A, Gore, Flagstaff, AZ). Patient demographics and Centers for Disease Control wound type were collected. RESULTS: A total of 81 patients were included. Seventy-four (91.4%) of these hernia repairs had mes

Implantation techniques (predilatation, sizing, and post-dilatation) and the incidence of scaffold thrombosis and revascularisation in lesions treated with an everolimus-eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffold: insights from the AIDA trial.

AIMS: Specific implantation strategies have been proposed for the Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold (Absorb BVS) to optimise outcomes. We aimed to analyse whether the occurrence of definite scaffold thrombosis (ScT) and target lesion revascularisation (TLR) in Absorb-treated AIDA patients was influenced by scaffold implantation techniques. METHODS AND RESULTS: Absorb BVS implantation in 1,074 lesions was graded according to definitions of optimal implantation based on predilatation, sizing, and post-dilatation (PSP). rhBMP6 in autologous blood coagulum is a preferred osteoinductive device to rhBMP2 on bovine collagen sponge in the rat ectopic bone formation assay.

Osteoinductive BMPs require a suitable delivery system for treating various pathological conditions of the spine and segmental bone defects. INFUSE, the only commercially available BMP-based osteoinductive device, consisting of rhBMP2 on bovine absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) showed major disadvantages due to serious side effects. A novel osteoinductive device, OSTEOGROW, comprised of rhBMP6 dispersed within autologous blood coagulum (ABC) is a promising therapy for bone regeneration, subjected to several clinical trials for diaphysial bone repair and spinal fusion.
