Breastfeeding, Early Self-Regulation, and Academic Achievement in Kindergarten Among Disadvantaged Children.

OBJECTIVES: The importance of breastfeeding exposure and children's development of self-regulation, independently, are well established. Each of these domains also has been linked to better cognitive development and academic achievement in children. However, little is known about how breastfeeding affects development of early self-regulation skills or whether self-regulation mediates the relationship between breastfeeding and academic achievement, particularly for disadvantaged children. This study examined breastfeeding exposure, self-regulation, and academic achievement in kindergarten among

A tale half told: State exclusionary and inclusionary regimes, incarceration of fathers, and the educational attainment of children.

Paternal incarceration leads to educational disparities among children who are innocent of their fathers' crimes. The scale and concentration of mass paternal incarceration thus harms millions of innocent American children. Current individuallevel analyses neglect the contribution of macro-level variation in responses of punitive state regimes to this social problem. We hypothesize that state as well as individual level investment in exclusionary paternal incarceration diminishes the educational attainment of children, although state inclusionary investment in welfare and education can offset

Let's emerge from the pandemic lockdown into a fairer academic world.

At the beginning of the pandemic, as universities were shutting, a meme did the rounds on social media. Some academics suggested that they were looking forward to increased productivity in grant and paper writing under lockdown. They cited the fact that Isaac Newton came up with his theory of gravity whilst quarantined during the bubonic plague. Globally, the reaction from many was to inwardly - or publicly - scream.

The Role of Learning Difficulties in Adolescents' Academic Emotions and Academic Achievement.

The present study examines associations between learning difficulties (LD), academic emotions, and academic achievement among 845 Grade 6 adolescents (455 girls, 390 boys). Reading difficulties (RD) and math difficulties (MD) were identified based on tested reading and math skills in the fall semester of Grade 6. At this time, the students also rated their hope, enjoyment, and anxiety regarding literacy and math. Information on students' achievement in literacy and math, as well as their overall academic achievement, was gathered using questionnaires in both the fall and spring semesters of Gr

Metabolic control and academic achievement over time among adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

The relation between metabolic control (HbA1c) and achievement (grade point average [GPA]) was examined over a period of 2.5 years (every 6 months) employing a dynamical systems approach that allowed for the examination of whether HbA1c was associated with change in subsequent GPA and vice versa. Metabolic control tends to deteriorate (i.e., with higher HbA1c reflecting poorer metabolic control) during adolescence. It was hypothesized that these higher levels of HbA1c would limit subsequent increases in GPA. The sample included 252 adolescents (Mbaseline age = 12.49 years, SD = 1.53; 53.6% fem

How growth mindset shapes math achievement: The moderating role of classroom practices and the mediating role of engagement across adolescence.

Although the positive role of a growth mindset in adolescent math learning is widely recognized, little is known about the moderating role of classroom practices, the mediating role of engagement, or developmental patterns in these relations. One thousand three hundred thirty adolescents in Grades 8, 10, and 12 attending 14 U.S. urban public schools (Mage = 15.50, SDage = 1.56; 54% female; 69% White, 26% Black; 49% low-income) participated in a longitudinal study conducted over one academic year. Students completed measures of motivation and reported on the classroom practices of their math te

The effect of a stress mindset intervention on academic motivation among junior high school students.

In recent years, stress mindset-how individuals perceive and respond to stress-has drawn increasing attention from researchers. Studies have begun to explore its mechanisms of influence on students' mental health and academic achievement. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a middle school in China. Two classes were randomly assigned to the intervention group and received a specially designed "Stress Mindset" course based on the B.E.S.T. principle, whereas the remaining two classes served as the control group. A total of 155 students participated, including 78 in the intervention gr

The NEST: An upstream approach to student success.

BACKGROUND: Pre- and post-licensure nursing students often face academic challenges in high stakes courses such as pathophysiology and pharmacology. To promote nursing program completion and timely graduation, it is important that students achieve success in these courses. PURPOSE: Recognizing the need to provide comprehensive academic support to students enrolled in pathophysiology and pharmacology, one school of nursing implemented an academic excellence initiative called NEST (Nursing Excellence through Scholarship and Technology). METHOD: The NEST program combines targeted academic inter

Exclusionary School Discipline and School Achievement for Middle and High School Students, by Race and Ethnicity.

IMPORTANCE: There are racial and ethnic inequities in exclusionary school discipline (ESD) (ie, a disciplinary action that removes students from their classroom or school environment, eg, referrals, suspensions, and/or expulsions) practices in the US. Exclusionary school discipline has been associated with negative education, health, and criminal justice outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether experiencing an ESD event was associated with decreased grade point average (GPA) and whether minoritized students (eg, Black or Latine [description used in database]) are disproportionately affect

Entwined life events: The effect of parental incarceration timing on children's academic achievement.

Parental incarceration has negative effects on children's educational outcomes. Past studies have only analyzed, and therefore only treated as consequential, parental incarceration that occurs during childhood rather than prenatally. Such analyses that emphasize the importance only of events that occur during one's lifetime are common in life course studies. This paper introduces an "entwined life events" perspective, which argues that certain events are so consequential to multiple persons' lives that they should be analyzed as events within multiple independent life courses; parental incarce

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess real-world educational outcomes and developmental disorders in patients with a history of Hirschsprung disease compared to an age-matched control group. METHODS: With ethics approval (H2016:014) a retrospective cohort study of all children diagnosed with Hirschsprung disease at a single centre from 1992 to 2017 was performed. A 10:1 date-of-birth matched control cohort was constructed from a population-based directory. The educational outcomes were compared using the following measures: Early Developmental Instrument, Grades 3, 7, and 8 assessments

Reading skills in children with mild to borderline intellectual disability: a cross-sectional study on second to eighth graders.

BACKGROUND: Students with intellectual disabilities (IDs) have various learning difficulties and are at risk for school failure. Large inter-individual differences are described for reading, but it is unclear how these vary as a function of grade. The aim of this study was to examine various reading fluency, accuracy and comprehension parameters in second-to-eighth-grade Italian children with either borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) or mild ID (MID). METHODS: We examined 106 children with BIF (67 M and 39 F) and 168 children with MID (107 M and 61 F). The children were in the second t

Academic Achievements of College Graduates With Learning Disabilities Vis-a-Vis Admission Criteria and Academic Support.

Postsecondary entrance examination scores are generally low predictors of college achievement (grade point average [GPA]) for students with learning disabilities (LD). The difficulties with meeting academic requirements have raised the awareness of the needs of students with LD for support services. The present study examined the adequacy of entrance criteria to academic studies for students with LD and the effectiveness of three support levels during their academic studies in increasing their academic gains. Data were collected for 315 college graduates with LD and 955 graduates who do not ha

Developmental trajectories of school-beginners' ability self-concept, intrinsic value and performance in mathematics.

BACKGROUND: Although research clearly demonstrates the importance of motivation in mathematics learning, relatively little is known about the developmental dynamics between different facets of mathematics motivation and performance, especially in the early years of schooling. AIMS: In a longitudinal setting, we examined (1) how children's ability self-concept and intrinsic value in mathematics change over time during their first 3 years in school, (2) how those changes relate to each other and (3) how they connect with mathematics performance. SAMPLE: The participants were 285 Finnish school

Brief Report: Investigating Relations Between Self-Concept and Performance in Reading and Math for School-Aged Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

A typically developing student's perceptions of his or her own capabilities (academic self-concept), is predictive of later academic achievement. However, little is known about academic self-concept in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To understand whether students math self-concept and reading self-concept predicted their performance, 44 school-aged children and adolescents with ASD and 36 age-matched individuals with typical development (TYP) rated their perceived math and reading abilities and were administered standardized achievement measures. Results showed self-concept was pre

Base rates of low achievement scores in young adults: implications for specific learning disability assessment.

BACKGROUND: Specific learning disability (SLD) is a high-incidence diagnosis, with academic skill deficits at its core. Diagnostic models for SLD vary but they generally require data from norm-referenced achievement tests. Multivariate base rates for low scores on such tests have not been examined in young adults. METHODS: The young adult (ages 18-29) group from the Woodcock-Johnson IV (WJ-IV; 2014) normative sample (N = 1330) was used. We calculated base rates for low scores on the 11 subtests of the Standard Battery of the WJ-IV Tests of Achievement. We also calculated base rates for discre

Harnessing Resilience to Mitigate the Effect of Test Anxiety on English Achievement: A Case of the Dual-Mode Hypothesis.

Test anxiety has been found to impede English achievement. Much attention has been paid to motivational and cognitive factors (e.g., self-concept, strategic competence) in reducing test anxiety and its effects, leaving under-explored psychological variables such as resilience. Drawing on the Dual-Mode Hypothesis (DMH), we hypothesize that resilience can impact the effect of test anxiety on English achievement through two modes: reducing the level of test anxiety and subsequently its effectiveness in impairing English achievement (the effectiveness mode) and weakening the negative relationship

Personal resource gains: Effective coping builds academic buoyancy, and academic buoyancy builds achievement.

BACKGROUND: Academic buoyancy is conceptualized as students' capacity to cope with academic challenges. Studies that examine how academic buoyancy and coping responses are reciprocally related, or that include relations with achievement, are lacking. AIMS: The study examined reciprocal relations among academic buoyancy, coping and achievement. SAMPLE: The sample comprised students aged 16-19 years in upper secondary education. At the first wave of data collection, there were 533 students (138 male, mean age = 16.4 years). METHODS: Data were collected in five waves over two school years. Ach
