Nation-wide surveillance of ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on dogs and cats in Singapore.

Companion animals are major reservoirs of zoonotic parasites and pathogens. Among these, ticks and tick-borne pathogens are of particular concern. Efforts to study the zoonotic risks associated with companion animals in Singapore have been hampered by a poor understanding of the ticks of local dogs and cats. To address this knowledge gap, ticks from companion animals were collected as part of Singapore's first nation-wide tick surveillance program beginning in 2018. Under the program, a total of 362 ticks were collected from dogs and one cat. These represented three tick genera and five specie

Molecular Cloning and Expression Analysis of Enolase in the Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

Rhipicephalus microplus is the main blooding-sucking ectoparasite of bovines and is regarded as important vectors of animal diseases such as Babesiosis. Mining protective antigens of R. microplus to develop antitick vaccine is the most potential tick control strategy. In this study, the specific primers were designed according to the conserved nucleotide sequence of enolase gene in Haemaphysalis flava, Ixodes ricinus, and Ornithodoros moubata. The fragment of enolase gene was obtained by PCR using cDNA template from fully engorged female R. microplus. The full-length cDNA of enolase gene was a

Counting Ticks (Acari: Ixodida) on Hosts Is Complex: A Review and Comparison of Methods.

Locating and counting parasites on a host is a fundamental aspect of ecological research and basic veterinary and clinical practice. Variability in the biology and behavior of both hosts and parasites creates many methodological, logistical, and ethical considerations that must be made to collect this deceptively simple measurement. We identified methods that are used to count ticks (Acari: Ixodida, Leach 1815) on hosts by reviewing the methods sections of relevant published studies. Unfortunately, there is no best method agreed upon by scientists to collect ticks from hosts. In general, we su

Rickettsial infection in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) from reptiles in the Colombian Caribbean.

Although more reptiles are illegally traded in Colombia than any other group of animals, for both local and international markets, little is known about ticks associated with reptiles or pathogens associated with these ticks. In this study, ticks were collected from reptiles in Magdalena, Cesar and La Guajira regions in northern Colombia, and identified morphologically using taxonomic keys and molecularly by sequencing of the COI gene. In addition, Rickettsia spp. were detected by PCR amplifying the gltA, 16S rRNA, and sca1 genes. Ticks were identified as Amblyomma dissimile, representing the

Habitat Suitability Model for the Distribution of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in Minnesota.

Ixodes scapularis Say, the black-legged tick, is the primary vector in the eastern United States of several pathogens causing human diseases including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. Over the past two decades, I. scapularis-borne diseases have increased in incidence as well as geographic distribution. Lyme disease exists in two major foci in the United States, one encompassing northeastern states and the other in the Upper Midwest. Minnesota represents a state with an appreciable increase in counties reporting I. scapularis-borne illnesses, suggesting geographic expansion of vector

Detection of a novel Rickettsia sp. in soft ticks (Acari: Argasidae) in Algeria.

Argasid ticks are vectors of viral and bacterial agents that can infect humans and animals. In Africa, relapsing fever borreliae are neglected arthropod-borne pathogens that cause mild to deadly septicemia and miscarriage. It would be incredibly beneficial to be able to simultaneous detect and identify other pathogens transmitted by Argasid ticks. From 2012 to 2014, we conducted field surveys in 4 distinct areas of Algeria. We investigated the occurrence of soft ticks in rodent burrows and yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) nests in 10 study sites and collected 154 soft ticks. Molecular id

Iron metabolism in hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae): the antidote to their toxic diet.

Ticks are notorious parasitic arthropods, known for their completely host-blood-dependent lifestyle. Hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) feed on their hosts for several days and can ingest blood more than a hundred times their unfed weight. Their blood-feeding habit facilitates the transmission of various pathogens. It is remarkable how hard ticks cope with the toxic nature of their blood meal, which contains several molecules that can promote oxidative stress including iron. While it is required in several physiological processes, high amounts of iron can be dangerous because iron can also participa

Abundance and distribution of Microdispus lambi (Acari: Microdispidae) in Spanish mushroom crops.

The myceliophagous mite Microdispus lambi has become a veritable plague since 1996, when it was first observed in Spanish mushroom crops, and is now causing substantial economic losses, particulary in spring and summer. This study looks at seasonal variation of the pest, its distribution on commercial farms and the population development during the crop cycle of the common white mushroom, Agaricus bisporus. Over a period of 18 months, 24 consecutive mushroom crop cycles were monitored and a total of 24 spawn and 960 substrate samples were analysed. We found that it is usually the substrates in

Approaches for sampling the twospotted spider mite (Acari: Tetranychidae) on clementines in Spain.

Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is an important pest of clementine mandarins, Citrus reticulata Blanco, in Spain. As a first step toward the development of an integrated crop management program for clementines, dispersion patterns of T. urticae females were determined for different types of leaves and fruit. The study was carried out between 2001 and 2003 in different commercial clementine orchards in the provinces of Castelló and Tarragona (northeastern Spain). We found that symptomatic leaves (those exhibiting typical chlorotic spots) harbored 57.1% of the total mite counts.

Transcriptome analysis of the salivary glands of Dermacentor andersoni Stiles (Acari: Ixodidae).

Amongst blood-feeding arthropods, ticks of the family Ixodidae (hard ticks) are vectors and reservoirs of a greater variety of infectious agents than any other ectoparasite. Salivary glands of ixodid ticks secrete a large number of pharmacologically active molecules that not only facilitate feeding but also promote establishment of infectious agents. Genomic, proteomic and immunologic characterization of bioactive salivary gland molecules are, therefore, important as they offer new insights into molecular events occurring at the tick-host interface and they have implications for development of

Additional instances of human parasitism by the brown dog tick (Acari: Ixodidae).

Nine cases of humans parasitized by the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille), are reported. Eight cases occurred during 1989. Seven of the individuals were from an apparent focus of human biting in northern Texas and southwestern Oklahoma, one case was from San Antonio, Bexar County, Tex., and one case was from Homestead Air Force Base, Dade County, Fla. These cases suggest that the role of R. sanguineus in the transmission of the etiologic agent of canine ehrlichiosis and other pathogenic organisms to humans may be underestimated and warrants investigation.

Host-dependent differences in feeding and reproduction of Ixodes dammini (Acari: Ixodidae).

The frequencies with which adult Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman and Corwin feed upon white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), raccoons (Procyon lotor), opossums (Didelphis virginiana), and domestic cats were compared in a wooded site in northeastern United States. By combining estimates of the quantity of ticks feeding on each host species with host densities, we derived the relative contribution made by each kind of host to the feeding of the tick population. To compare engorgement success and reproductive efficacy, we weighed ticks found on these hosts and compared tick weight

Different cadaver astigmatan mites (Arthropoda: Acari) are designed to bite flesh differently.

How dead bodies decay is useful forensically. Necrophagous astigmatan mites (Acari: Sarcoptiformes) commonly attacking cadavers change from protein-seeking Type 1 surface feeding omnivores to interstitial Type 2 fragmentary feeding obligate fungivore / microbiovores as human body decomposition progresses after death. An analytical occlusive method shows that at each forensic decay stage the chelae of the astigmatans are designed to bite foodstuff differently. Fixed chelal digits are more ‘toothy’ than moveable digits in such sarcoptiform mites. Variation in fixed digit design is all about the

DNA barcoding reveals novel biodiversity in ticks (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) of Ethiopia.

Identification of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) is problematic due to inconsistent diagnostic characters, sexual dimorphism, individual variation, and vast morphological differences among life stages, as well as distortion through blood feeding. DNA barcoding has proven useful in delineating tick species, but available genetic databases are littered with misleading mis-identifications, hindering tick-borne disease mitigation strategies. Efforts are needed to generate high quality reference sequences from expertly identified and morphologically vouchered samples. To date, 56 species of
