A stochastic delay framework for East Coast fever dynamics with integrated vaccination, treatment, and acaricide strategies.

East Coast fever (ECF) is a severe tick-borne disease of cattle in Africa caused by Theileria parva and transmitted primarily by the brown ear tick, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. This study develops a stochastic delay differential equation model for ECF transmission between cattle and ticks by incorporating vaccination, treatment, natural recovery, carrier-mediated transmission, and acaricide-induced tick removal. Two biologically distinct delays are included: a cattle-side delay representing the incubation or prepatent period and a tick-side delay representing parasite development within the

Acaricidal efficacy of fluralaner against Rhipicephalus microplus ticks under laboratory and field conditions in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The first isoxazoline-based acaricide (fluralaner) for the control of Rhipicephalus microplus was introduced onto the market in 2022, initially in Brazil, followed by other Latin American countries. Therefore, it is important to establish laboratory methods to monitor the susceptibility of populations of R. microplus to this molecule and to determine the relationship between the results of laboratory tests and those from field trials. METHODS: A larval immersion test (LIT) was performed on 18 populations of R. microplus. The lethal concentration 50 (concentration causing 50% morta

Acaricidal, larvacidal, and repellent activity of Linalool loaded zinc oxide nanoparticles against Hyalomma anatolicum.

Current strategies for tick control have led to the development of resistance and environmental contamination. Consequently, there is an urgent need for research into new and effective acaricides for tick control. The aim of this study was to fabricate and characterize Linalool loaded zinc oxide nanoparticles (Lin@ZNP), and to assess the acaricidal, larvacidal, and repellent activities of Lin@ ZNP against Hyalomma anatolicum, a prevalent tick species infesting cattle in Saudi Arabia. Lin@ ZNP was synthesized using an ethanolic solution of polyvinyl alcohol. The adult immersion, the larval pack

In vitro acaricidal activity of essential oils and their binary mixtures against ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae).

Ixodes scapularis ticks are vectors of infectious agents that cause illness in humans, including Lyme disease. Recent years have seen a surge in tick-borne diseases (TBD) resulting in a high demand for tick management products. Plants offer a valuable source of active compounds for the development of novel, eco-friendly tick control products, reducing potential risks to human and animal health. Essential oils (EOs) have emerged as potential acaricides and repellents against ticks providing an alternative to synthetic chemicals and aiding in the prevention of TBD by lowering the risk of tick bi

Evaluation of fluralaner as an oral acaricide to reduce tick infestation in a wild rodent reservoir of Lyme disease.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is an increasing public health threat in temperate zones of the northern hemisphere, yet relatively few methods exist for reducing LD risk in endemic areas. Disrupting the LD transmission cycle in nature is a promising avenue for risk reduction. This experimental study evaluated the efficacy of fluralaner, a recent oral acaricide with a long duration of effect in dogs, for killing Ixodes scapularis ticks in Peromyscus maniculatus mice, a known wildlife reservoir for Borrelia burgdorferi in nature. METHODS: We assigned 87 mice to 3 fluralaner treatment groups (50

In vitro bioassays used in evaluating plant extracts for tick repellent and acaricidal properties: A critical review.

Ticks are haematophagous arthropods which rank closely with mosquitoes in their capacity to transmit disease pathogens of importance to animals and humans. Current control of ticks is based on the routine use of synthetic chemicals administered to animals or their environment. However, years of use and overuse of these chemicals have resulted in the development of resistance in these parasites and negative environmental impacts, hence the need for cheaper, safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives with alternate modes of action. There has been a large interest in using plants for th

Acaricidal properties of the formulations based on essential oils from Cymbopogon winterianus and Syzygium aromaticum plants.

The cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, has caused serious harm to livestock raising in Brazil, considering the costs of controlling it, loss of revenue due to smaller production of milk and meat, and damage to leather, in addition to transmitting diseases. The use of medicinal plants is considered an alternative to the recurring resistance to chemicals. Due to the need for efficient alternatives with less environmental impact, this study aimed to develop contact formulations with essential oils from the Java citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus) and clove (Syzygium aromaticum) pla

In vitro and in vivo acaricidal activity and residual toxicity of spinosad to the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae.

This paper describes two experiments conducted to examine the acaricidal potential of spinosad against the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer), a serious ectoparasitic pest of laying hens. Spinosad is a natural product derived from the fermentation of the micro-organism Saccharopolyspora spinosa. In vitro testing confirmed that, when applied to a galvanised metal plate to the point of run-off, spinosad was toxic to adult female D. gallinae and suggested that at an application rate of 3.88 g/L a significant residual toxicity of spinosad could be achieved for up to 21 days. Susceptibility of Amblyomma sculptum, Vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, Ticks from a National Park and an Experimental Farm to Different Synthetic Acaricides.

Amblyomma sculptum is a relevant tick species from a One Health perspective, playing an important role as a vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the main agent of spotted fever rickettsiosis in Brazil. In this study, we evaluated the susceptibility of two A. sculptum populations from Goiás state (midwestern Brazil) to different acaricides. The first tick population (GYN strain) originated from an experimental farm, where the ticks are annually exposed to acaricides. The second (PNE strain) was collected in a national park (Emas National Park), where the ticks had not been exposed to acaricides. Im

P8 nuclear receptor responds to acaricides exposure and regulates transcription of P450 enzyme in the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae.

Spider mites are destructive arthropod pests on many crops and they have developed resistance to nearly all acaricides. In recent years, along with the application of high throughput sequencing, the molecular mechanisms of mite resistance had made a series of progress. But, the response in molecular level of mite exposure to acaricides, as well as the original mechanism of resistance development was still unclear. To disclose the deeply mechanisms, we used RNA sequencing to analyze the responses of mite exposure to a sublethal concentration (LC30) treatment of the three different action mode a

Resistance to acaricides in the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) from dairy farms in the Triângulo Mineiro region, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Rhipicephalus microplus is a major ectoparasite of cattle in tropical and subtropical regions and poses a serious threat to animal welfare and productivity. Chemical acaricides remain the main method of control in Brazil. Nevertheless, resistance to these compounds has become increasingly widespread. Minas Gerais is the leading milk-producing state in Brazil, yet data on acaricide resistance in one of its key dairy-producing region, the Triângulo Mineiro, remain scarce. This study evaluated the resistance of R. microplus populations from 15 dairy farms from nine municipalities in the Triângulo

Thymol enhances the acaricidal effects of cypermethrin through the disruption of oocyte development in Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is one of the most important ectoparasites in tropical and subtropical regions. Synthetic pyrethroids are widely used to control this tick, although the selection of resistant populations is a worldwide concern. Thymol, a natural monoterpene, alone or combined with other compounds, has shown efficacy against tick species. In R. microplus engorged females, thymol increases cypermethrin concentration in various tissues by enhancing its penetration at the cuticular level.
