Association between wrist-worn free-living accelerometry and hand grip strength in middle-aged and older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Wrist-worn activity monitors have seen widespread adoption in recent times, particularly in young and sport-oriented cohorts, while their usage among older adults has remained relatively low. The main limitations are in regards to the lack of medical insights that current mainstream activity trackers can provide to older subjects. One of the most important research areas under investigation currently is the possibility of extrapolating clinical information from these wearable devices. METHODS: The research question of this study is understanding whether accelerometry data collec

Evaluating Accelerometry Thresholds for Detecting Changes in Levels of Moderate Physical Activity and Resulting Major Mobility Disability.

BACKGROUND: An important decision with accelerometry is the threshold in counts per minute (CPM) used to define moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). We explore the ability of different thresholds to track changes in MVPA due to a physical activity (PA) intervention among older adults with compromised function: 760 CPM, 1,041 CPM, and an individualized threshold. We also evaluate the ability of change in accelerometry and self-reported PA to attenuate treatment effects on major mobility disability (MMD). METHODS: Data from a week of hip worn accelerometers and self-reported PA data (

Validating accelerometry estimates of energy expenditure across behaviours using heart rate data in a free-living seabird.

Two main techniques have dominated the field of ecological energetics: the heart rate and doubly labelled water methods. Although well established, they are not without their weaknesses, namely expense, intrusiveness and lack of temporal resolution. A new technique has been developed using accelerometers; it uses the overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA) of an animal as a calibrated proxy for energy expenditure. This method provides high-resolution data without the need for surgery. Significant relationships exist between the rate of oxygen consumption (V̇O2 ) and ODBA in controlled conditi

Deep learning approaches to predict femoral neck T-score and osteopenia/osteoporosis status from wrist accelerometry data.

Osteoporosis is a prevalent condition with substantial health and economic implications. Although physical activity is associated with bone health, the specific temporal activity patterns related to bone mineral status remain insufficiently understood. This proof-of-concept study evaluated whether convolutional neural networks (CNNs) applied to Gramian Angular Field (GAF) representations of MIMS-derived wrist accelerometry data could predict femoral neck T-score and classify normal bone status versus osteopenia/osteoporosis. Data from 2504 participants in NHANES 2013-2014 were analyzed, includ

Comparing Step-Counting Algorithms for High-Resolution Wrist Accelerometry Data in Older Adults in the ARIC Study.

BACKGROUND: Step counting from wrist accelerometry data is widely used in physical activity research and practice. While several open-source algorithms can estimate steps from high-resolution accelerometry data, there is a critical need to compare these algorithms and provide practical recommendations for their use in older adults. METHODS: A total of 1 282 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study participants (mean age 83.4, 60% female) wore ActiGraph GT9X wrist devices for 7 days, collecting 80-Hz triaxial accelerometry data. Five open-source step-counting algorithms (ADEPT, Oak, Step Dete

Enhancing rehabilitation in stroke survivors: a deep learning approach to access upper extremity movement using accelerometry data.

Upper Extremity (UE) rehabilitation is crucial for stroke survivors, aiming to improve the use of the paretic UE in everyday activities. However, assessing the effectiveness of these treatments is challenging due to a lack of objective measurement tools. Traditional methods, such as clinician-rated motor ability or patient self-reports, often fail to measure UE performance in real-life settings accurately. Evidence suggests that currently used clinical assessments do not reliably capture actual UE use at home or in the community. This study investigates the application of Convolutional Neural

Artificial intelligence to predict modified rankin score after acute stroke symptoms using wrist-worn triaxial accelerometry data.

BACKGROUND: The modified Rankin Scale (mRS) is the most common measure of post-stroke functional outcome. However, its impact on post-stroke care is limited by its subjectivity, impracticality in vulnerable populations, and susceptibility to cultural and language barriers. Artificial intelligence (AI) applied to triaxial wrist-worn accelerometry data may offer an objective way to characterize post-stroke functional status and related changes. METHODS: We analyzed data from the REACH Stroke-Sleep study at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Using single-day epochs averaged over the firs

Thigh-worn accelerometry: a comparative study of two no-code classification methods for identifying physical activity types.

BACKGROUND: The more accurate we can assess human physical behaviour in free-living conditions the better we can understand its relationship with health and wellbeing. Thigh-worn accelerometry can be used to identify basic activity types as well as different postures with high accuracy. User-friendly software without the need for specialized programming may support the adoption of this method. This study aims to evaluate the classification accuracy of two novel no-code classification methods, namely SENS motion and ActiPASS. METHODS: A sample of 38 healthy adults (30.8 ± 9.6 years; 53% female

Use of Hidden Markov Models to Identify Behavioral Patterns in Accelerometry Data of Subterranean Rodents in Field Enclosures.

Activity rhythms of laboratory rodents are usually measured by running wheels, and although wheel running activity-or-rest data enable straightforward rhythmic analyses, it provides limited behavioral information. In subterranean rodents (tuco-tucos), we used bio-loggers (accelerometers) to measure activity rhythms in both lab and field conditions, detecting diverse movements that compose activity. However, understanding these different accelerometer-detected activity components requires more complex analytical tools. Here we used supervised hidden Markov models (HMMs) as a machine learning an

Incorporating an Exercise Detection, Grading, and Hormone Dosing Algorithm Into the Artificial Pancreas Using Accelerometry and Heart Rate.

In this article, we present several important contributions necessary for enabling an artificial endocrine pancreas (AP) system to better respond to exercise events. First, we show how exercise can be automatically detected using body-worn accelerometer and heart rate sensors. During a 22 hour overnight inpatient study, 13 subjects with type 1 diabetes wearing a Zephyr accelerometer and heart rate monitor underwent 45 minutes of mild aerobic treadmill exercise while controlling their glucose levels using sensor-augmented pump therapy. We used the accelerometer and heart rate as inputs into a v

Prescription footwear for severe injuries of foot and ankle: effect on regularity and symmetry of the gait assessed by trunk accelerometry.

After foot and/or ankle fracture, the restoration of optimal gait symmetry is one of the criteria of recovery. Orthotic insoles and orthopaedic shoes improve gait symmetry and regularity by controlling joint motion and improving alignment. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of prescription footwear on gait quality by using accelerometers attached to the lower back. Sixteen adult patients with persistent disability after ankle and/or foot fractures performed two 30-s walking trials with and without prescription footwear (insoles and stabilizing shoes). Sixteen control subject

Accelerometry-Based Assessment of Overnight Coat Use on Dog Sleep and Activity Patterns: Implications for Farm Dog Welfare.

New Zealand working farm dogs can struggle to maintain their body weight and condition during periods of high workload, despite substantial energy intake, highlighting the need to optimise energy balance. One potential strategy for reducing overall energy demands is to reduce energy expenditure for thermoregulation, particularly during colder conditions, which may improve both recovery and energy utilisation. This study investigated whether wearing coats influenced the sleep behaviour, activity, and apparent nutrient digestibility of outdoor-kennelled dogs. Eight adult working-breed dogs (n =

Detection of nocturnal epileptic seizures using a wearable armband: A deep learning approach combining accelerometry and photoplethysmography signals.

BACKGROUND: Epileptic seizures can lead to severe outcomes including sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Clinical standard for seizure diagnosis and detection requires electroencephalography and video monitoring, which is yet considered not suitable for home use, especially during nighttime sleep in a low-light condition. We proposed a deep learning (DL)-based approach to automatically detect nocturnal major seizures using a wearable armband that can potentially help reduce SUDEP risk through timely caregiver intervention. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 68 patients with m

Combined Individual Experience and Accelerometry Measurement of Upper Limb Use in Daily Activities in Real Time After Stroke.

Use of the upper limb to engage in everyday activities is a key indicator of functional recovery of stroke survivors. In addition to functional capacity, personal and environmental factors contribute to real-world upper limb use post-stroke. We aimed to combine data from the experience sampling method (ESM), a method used to capture real-time engagement in daily activities, with accelerometry, an objective measurement of arm use, to evaluate arm use behaviours of adult stroke survivors living in real-world environments. Thirty mild-moderately impaired stroke survivors and 30 age-standardized h

Estimating running economy using wearable trunk accelerometry: a comparative analysis of three footwear conditions in highly trained runners.

Wearable accelerometry offers a practical methodology for analysing running biomechanics, a key determinant of running economy (RE). This study investigated whether accelerometer-derived features could estimate RE in highly trained runners. Eighteen male participants (age: 26.5 ± 3.4 years; body mass index: 21.1 ± 1.2 kg/m2; 5 km personal best: 15 min 26 s ± 1 min) completed one laboratory visit, with RE assessed during 5-min treadmill runs at 12 km/h and 16 km/h across three shoe conditions. Metabolic parameters were quantified via indirect calorimetry, while a tri-axial accelerometer measure
