Imaging of the carotid artery vulnerable plaque.

Atherosclerosis involving the carotid arteries has a high prevalence in the population worldwide. This condition is significant because accidents of the carotid artery plaque are associated with the development of cerebrovascular events. For this reason, carotid atherosclerotic disease needs to be diagnosed and those determinants that are associated to an increased risk of stroke need to be identified. The degree of stenosis typically has been considered the parameter of choice to determine the therapeutical approach, but several recently published investigations have demonstrated that the deg

A retrospective study on epidemiology and treatment of maxillofacial fractures.

There are many different studies about the epidemiology and characteristics of maxillofacial fractures. In the authors' clinic a study was done regarding the characteristics of patients with maxillofacial fractures. 553 patients were investigated retrospectively. The causes, localizations, fracture types, treatments modalities, and complications were evaluated. The most common cause of maxillofacial fractures was traffic accidents (90.15%) followed by interpersonal violence (2.71%). The most common fracture site was the parasymphisis (30.9%) in mandibular fractures and the orbital rim in midfa

[Development of a lower limb model for the study of accident sequelae of vehicle-pedestrian collisions].

A major goal of the development and associated experimental investigation of car bumpers is the minimization of injuries in car-to-pedestrian collisions. Because the lower leg is particularly prone to injuries in a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian, a lower leg model has been developed that makes it possible to simulate most of the processes occurring during an injury. In cooperation with the Institut für Biomedizinische Technik (Institute for Biomedical Technology) of the University of Stuttgart and the Kunststofflabor des Fachbereiches für Produktionstechnik (Institute for Product

Safety risks and train drivers' perceptions: measurement of latent difficulties from the Taiwan railway.

This research utilizes data from the Taiwan railway to investigate the applicability of the SHELL (software, hardware, environment, liveware) model and psychometric multidimensional Rasch methods in evaluating train drivers' risk perceptions across various hazardous scenarios. The study establishes a systematic approach to identify which risks are challenging to perceive and to characterize the traits associated with risky train drivers. Our findings indicate that certain drivers may be more prone to incurring higher risks. Safety supervisors can leverage this information to identify these hig

Liaison consultation psychiatry with patients who have replantation surgery to the upper limb.

Thirty-eight patients who had replantation surgery to the upper limb were studied and findings, case vignettes and specific liaison-consultation issues are presented. The assessment of the patient for pre-existing psychopathology, such as drug and alcohol abuse and personality abnormalities, is emphasised; the possibility of the amputation having been a deliberate, self-inflicted act is noted; and the roles of pre-accident stress and emotional conflict are discussed. Data concerning adverse post-operative emotional reactions are presented and body-image changes, including the disruption to bod

Cranio-maxillofacial trauma: a 10 year review of 9,543 cases with 21,067 injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Cranio-maxillofacial trauma management requires pertinent documentation. Using a large computerized database, injury surveillance and research data describe the whole spectrum of injuries. The goal of this study was to assess the effect of the five main causes of accidents resulting in facial injury on the severity of cranio-maxillofacial trauma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: During a period of 10 years (1991-2000) 9,543 patients were admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital of Innsbruck with cranio-maxillofacial trauma. Data of patients were pro

Overview: psychiatric sequelae to multiple trauma.

The authors discuss the setting, patients, and staff, and the role of psychiatric consultants in intensive care units and trauma centers. They point out the similarities and differences between patients with multiple trauma and those who have had open-heart surgery and head or spinal cord injuries. They also deal with the question of an element of self-destructive behavior in accidents and offer suggestions for the psychiatric management of severely traumatized patients. The authors conclude that the role and obligation of the psychiatrist of the the future will lie in crisis intervention with

A Retrospective Evaluation of Mandibular Fracture in Kabul, Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: The mandible, a key bone in the lower face, is prone to trauma. Although mandibular fractures are widely recognized as common and costly, there is a research gap on this topic in Afghanistan. This study explores the causes of lower jaw fractures and their link to demographic factors in the Afghan population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 535 medical records from a Kabul tertiary hospital (March 2021 to March 2022) examined lower jaw fractures, patient demographics (age, sex), and injury causes. Statistical methods, including chi-square tests and Pearson's cont

Seasickness and its impact on researchers' work on board French oceanographic vessels.

BACKGROUND: Seasickness (SS) is an often hidden pathology, but one that can significantly disrupt work on board. The aim of the study is to evaluate the influence of SS on the workability of workers on board vessels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional questionnaire study conducted on 250 oceanographers in 2015 during 3 months. Based on the "Bos seasickness susceptibility questionnaire", we created a specific questionnaire with 49 questions. RESULTS: 151 men and 72 women responded to the survey. 188 of them (91.7% of women and 80.8% of men) report being seasick, either occa

Evidence for an increase in trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) in Europe after the Chernobyl reactor accident.

The objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence of Down syndrome (DS) associated with Chernobyl fallout. Maternal age-adjusted DS data and corresponding live birth data from the following seven European countries or regions were analyzed: Bavaria and West Berlin in Germany, Belarus, Hungary, the Lothian Region of Scotland, North West England, and Sweden from 1981 to 1992. To assess the underlying time trends in the DS occurrence, and to investigate whether there have been significant changes in the trend functions after Chernobyl, we applied logistic regression allowing for peaks

Analysis of teenage seat belt use: from the 2007 Missouri high school seat belt survey.

INTRODUCTION: This study analyzed high school teenagers' seat belt use based on the observational surveys of more than 15,000 teenagers at 150 schools and was conducted in the state of Missouri, U.S., in 2007. Since fatal car accidents involving high school teenagers are disproportionately high, and increased seat belt use saves lives in what would otherwise be fatal accidents, it is imperative that teenagers' safety be protected through an increase in use. METHOD: This study investigated various personal, vehicle, school, and locational factors associated with high school teenagers' seat bel

[Acute renal artery occlusion. Origin, diagnosis, possibilities of treatment].

Although acute renal artery occlusion is luckily a rare event, many cases are probably overlooked. They are caused either by emboli, accidents or iatrogenic vascular injury. The conventional wisdom holds that the kidney is irreversibly damaged by arterial obstruction lasting several hours, but clinical experience shows that there are exceptions to this rule. How this is to be explained from the pathophysiologic viewpoint is discussed in this article. Recognition of acute renal artery occlusion is easiest and fastest in iatrogenic cases. In trauma due to accidents, useful pointers are hematuria

A fatal case of accidental asphyxia following nitrous oxide inhalation and alcohol consumption.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) abuse is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Moreover, the use of N2O combined with other substances, such as alcohol, is also common. Accidental deaths associated with N2O abuse are rare in forensic practice, with most fatal cases involving continuous inhalation equipment or exposure in a confined space. In contrast, the inhalation of N2O using balloons is traditionally regarded as a relatively safe method. In this report, we present an unusual fatal case of a 16-year-old girl who died after drinking alcohol and inhaling N2O from balloons. The decedent was found in a

Childhood obesity: a risk factor for traumatic injuries to anterior teeth.

The relationship between obesity and traumatic dental injuries was evaluated in a study population of 938 6- to 11-year-old schoolchildren from Rome, Italy, and it was suggested by the lifestyle and the physical activity of obese children, which, according to many authors, is different from the lifestyle of other children. The subjects were examined at school: presence and type of dental injury, overjet, incisor protrusion, upper lip incompetence and presence of obesity were recorded. Trauma predisposition was evaluated with a questionnaire investigating the behaviour which may predispose to i

[Sleep disorders and work: guidelines for health surveillance, risk management and prevention].

Sleep disorders and related diseases are becoming increasingly relevant for the health and wellbeing of the general and working populations. Sleep disorders affect all aspects of health, showing a bi-directionality with health conditions and comorbidity with several diseases. Consequently, sleep disorders may have severe negative consequences both for the individual and the enterprise, as well as for society on the whole, in terms of health, productivity and social costs. When considering the disturbances of the sleep/wake cycle, it is important to distinguish between those connected with endo

Deficiency of the proapoptotic SAP function in X-linked lymphoproliferative disease aggravates Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) induced mononucleosis and promotes lymphoma development.

The lack of functional SAP protein, a consequence of mutation or deletion of the SH2D1A gene is the cause of X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP). Others and we have shown that SAP can be involved in apoptosis. Activation induced apoptosis plays a pivotal role in the termination of the lymphocyte proliferation in infectious mononucleosis IM. This mechanism is inefficient in the XLP patients. Primary EBV infection of boys with XLP leads therefore to fulminant, often even fatal disease. In addition, the condition predisposes to considerably elevated incidence of lymphomas. Chromosomal tran

Chronic Manganese Toxicity in Indian Mines-An Historical Account of the Contributions of Dr. T.P. Niyogi.

The mining of manganese ore in India started in the year 1899, in Nagpur district of the Central Provinces. Almost six decades later, in 1957, Dr. T. P. Niyogi examined several young men involved in dry drilling of Manganese ore, who had symptoms of muscular pain, weakness, clumsy movements, asthenia, anorexia, insomnia, and gait difficulties. These patients were also emotionally disturbed and prone to falls and accidents. He concluded that these symptoms were due to chronic manganese toxicity with parkinsonian features and psychiatric manifestations which he published in 1958.[1] This lead to

The relative risk of nearside accidents is high for the youngest and oldest pedestrians.

Police road accident data from Great Britain for 1990-2009 were analysed. RR(NF) is the risk of a casualty occurring in the first half of road crossing, the half nearest to the pedestrian's starting position at the roadside, compared to the risk of it occurring in the second half. Children and younger adult pedestrians had a high relative risk of being killed or seriously injured in the nearside of the road (RR(NF)). RR(NF) decreased with age, for men and women, but rose again for people aged over 85 years. It was also substantially lower for children under 10 years old. Three possible explana

Transesophageal echocardiographic evaluation of coronary arteries for stenosis in the elderly patient.

This article documents the ability of transesophageal echocardiography to provide adequate images and clinically relevant information about the coronary anatomy of the elderly patient. Transesophageal echocardiography is commonly used to assess elderly patients who suffer cerebral vascular accidents. It is important to evaluate not only for the usually suspected causes of a cardiac source of emboli but also for direct and indirect evidence of coronary artery disease--the leading cause of death in the elderly stroke patient. Because atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases identified in one vasc
