Development and validation of the acculturation discrepancy scale for youth of Korean descent in Japan (ADS-KJ).

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop and validate the Acculturation Discrepancy Scale for Youth of Korean Descent in Japan (ADS-KJ). The scale measures youths’ subjective perceptions of intergenerational cultural gaps, that lead to parent–child acculturation discrepancies. METHODS: Based on interview data and a review of previous studies, an item pool was created and administered via questionnaire surveys to 278 youths of Korean descent in Japan and 110 Japanese youths. The scale’s structural validity, construct validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and criterion-related

The moderating role of gender and acculturative status in the socialization of cultural values in U.S. Mexican families.

OBJECTIVES: Familismo and respeto are traditional Latine values often taught to U.S. Latine children by their caregivers. Deference to authority figures and restraint from defiance to such figures are also taught. Despite the central role of these as markers of Latine ethnic identity and their relevance to children's health and well-being, little is known on how these traditional cultural values are socialized and whether differences exist in these values between English-speaking and Spanish-speaking U.S. Latine mothers and between boys and girls. We examined expressions of familismo, respeto,

Is duration of residence a proxy for acculturation? The case of health risk behaviors among international immigrants.

AIMS: Among international immigrants, health changes by duration of residence are commonly interpreted as an expression of acculturation to the receiving country context. This study compares changes in immigrants' health risk behaviors by duration of residence to changes by acculturation levels, in order to assess whether duration of residence can be regarded as a proxy for acculturation. METHODS: Using data from a previous systematic review, we identified 17 quantitative studies examining changes in alcohol, tobacco and drug use, physical inactivity, and diet by both duration of residence an

A Qualitative Exploration of Latinos' Perceptions About Skin Cancer: the Role of Gender and Linguistic Acculturation.

Latinos have the highest rate of skin cancers among U.S. minorities. Despite a rising incidence of melanoma-the deadliest form of skin cancer-and greater disease burden, Latinos tend to have poor awareness of skin cancer risk factors which may inhibit preventive action. We expanded on prior work by qualitatively examining potential moderators (i.e., gender, acculturation) of skin cancer perceptions among Latinos from El Barrio in Harlem, New York City. Four focus groups stratified by language (English/Spanish) and gender were conducted. Discussions were recorded, transcribed, and coded using t

Acculturative stress and psychotic-like experiences among Asian and Latino immigrants to the United States.

Previous studies have shown variation in the prevalence and incidence of psychosis across immigrant groups, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Stress related to acculturation may increase risk for psychosis among immigrant groups. In this study we examine the association between acculturative stress and psychotic-like experiences in a sample of Latino- and Asian-American immigrants to the United States in the National Latino and Asian American Study (n=2434). Acculturative stress was associated with visual and auditory hallucinations among Asians, but only with hearing voi

Acculturation to Western society as a risk factor for high blood pressure: a meta-analytic review.

OBJECTIVE: A number of studies have documented that acculturation to western society is related to an increase in blood pressure (BP). Although there is evidence that higher socioeconomic status appears related to better cardiovascular health, increasing acculturation to western society appears related to worse cardiovascular health. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the association between acculturation and BP. METHODS: Literature searches yielded 125 relevant research manuscripts, which were coded by teams of two independent raters. This study was conducted in 2003 and 20

[Mental disorders among Japanese-Brazilians in Japan: relationships to pre-migration and acculturative factors].

The current population of Japanese-Brazilians living in Japan consists mainly of second- and third-generation Japanese immigrants to Brazil. In the last 10 years, they have migrated to Japan, their ancestral country, mostly as industrial workers. The objective of this study was to examine possible relationships between mental disorders and both pre-migration psychosocial factors and acculturative status, among Japanese-Brazilians in Japan. We developed our own Portuguese acculturation-questionnaire to assess the their adaptation to Japanese society and their ethnic-cultural identity. Using the

Viviendo entre dos culturas: Evaluating the psychometric properties of the Psychological Acculturation Scale among Latinx caregivers.

This study evaluated the structure, internal consistency, language-based measurement invariance, and construct validity of the Psychological Acculturation Scale (PAS), which assesses psychological acculturation via emotional attachment and belonging-based indicators. Analyses were conducted on a sample of 511 Latinx caregivers of youth with emotional/behavioral problems living in the United States (U.S.). Caregivers provided survey data either in English or Spanish on key sociodemographic factors (e.g., age, binary-gender, generational status in the U.S., language preference) and on psychologi

Acculturation, Social Support, and Healthcare Utilisation Among Indonesian Migrant Workers in Malaysia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Equitable healthcare access is a key aspect of health equity, yet migrants face substantial barriers. In Malaysia, migrant workers encounter structural and socio-economic barriers to healthcare. Acculturation and social support may influence healthcare utilisation, but their interrelated role remains unclear. This study examined associations between acculturation, social support, and healthcare utilisation among Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia, and whether social support was indirectly associated with the relationship between acculturation and healthcare utilisation. Bean Preferences Vary by Acculturation Level among Latinas and by Ethnicity with Non-Hispanic White Women.

With high levels of protein, fiber, folate, iron and other micronutrients, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating beans for optimal nutrition. Low-income women are at greater risk of nutrition-related health disparities. Use of beans may change among Hispanic women (Latinas) during acculturation, but few studies exist that describe specific preferences of this important traditional food. Preserving or promoting beans in the diets of all low-income women could improve dietary quality. The study objectives were to describe consumption frequency, purchasing patterns, and attitudes

Acculturation and selected birth defects among non-Hispanic Blacks in a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: There are noted birth defects prevalence differences between race/ethnicity groups. For instance, non-Hispanic (NH) Black mothers are more likely to have an infant with encephalocele, although less likely to have an infant with anotia/microtia compared to NH Whites. When stratifying by nativity and years lived within the United States, additional variations become apparent. METHODS: Data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study were used to calculate descriptive statistics and estimate crude/adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) among NH Blacks

Acculturation, family cohesion, and mental health among Latinos living with HIV on the U.S.-Mexico border.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate whether acculturation to U.S. culture is associated with greater posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology through diminished family cohesion among Latinos living with HIV on the U.S.-Mexico border. METHOD: Baseline survey data were analyzed from a sample of Latinos seeking HIV care from a publicly funded HIV clinic in El Paso, Texas. We used a regression-based bootstrapping approach to test our mediation hypothesis. RESULTS: A total of 248 Latinos living with HIV completed the survey, with 96.4% being of Mexican descent, 19.

Sleep behaviors of infants and young children: associated demographic and acculturation characteristics among Hispanic teen mothers.

Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed is a leading cause of preventable infant death. Bed sharing, teen motherhood, and Hispanic ethnicity have been associated with infant sleep suffocation death. Fifty-five Hispanic teen mothers were surveyed regarding acculturation/demographic characteristics and their infants' sleep behaviors. Most participants had 2 foreign-born parents from Latin America. Participants with 2 US-born parents were less likely to bed share than their less-acculturated peers. Many participants reported not always placing their infant in a supine sleep position. Ther

Social anxiety among East Asians in North America: East Asian socialization or the challenge of acculturation?

North American research has consistently reported higher social anxiety among people of Asian heritage compared to people of Western heritage. The present study used a cross-national sample of 692 university students to explore explanatory hypotheses using planned contrasts of group differences in social anxiety and related variables. The East Asian socialization hypothesis proposed social anxiety would show a linear relation corresponding to the degree of exposure to East Asian cultural norms. This hypothesis was not supported. The cultural discrepancy hypothesis examined whether bicultural E

Acculturation-related variables, sexual initiation, and subsequent sexual behavior among Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Cuban youth.

The relationship among acculturation-related variables, past sexual activity, and subsequent sexual behavior was examined for a sample of Latino youth in the United States over a 12-month period. A subsample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health database was analyzed by means of a prospective design. History of sexual intercourse predicted subsequent sexual behavior over the ensuing 12 months. The acculturation-related variables were related to whether an adolescent reported being sexually active at Wave 1 but in a complex fashion. Among recent immigrants, youth from Englis

Acculturation Stress Magnifies Child Depression Effect of Stressful Life Events for Latinx Youth 3 Years Later.

INTRODUCTION: Experiences of stressful life events (SLEs) during childhood are associated with greater risk for youth psychopathology. Although SLEs are reported in greater frequency by Latinx families, Latinx populations remain largely absent in the SLE literature. Furthermore, Latinx populations face added stressors related to socio-political climate, acculturation, and racism and discrimination. The purpose of this study was to explore the intersection between parent-reported SLEs and acculturation (i.e., socio-political climate-related) stressors for Latinx youth. Greater frequency of care

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Acculturation, and Risky Sexual Behaviors in Hispanic Young Adults: Findings from Project RED.

While adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are well-documented predictors of maladaptive behaviors in adulthood, including risky sexual behaviors (RSB), the influence of acculturation in this association remains unknown. Although Hispanics are a rapidly growing population in the United States and are disproportionately affected by adverse sexual health outcomes, there is a paucity of research examining the interplay of ACE, acculturation, and RSB in this population. We observed the ACE-RSB association and how this relationship varies across U.S. and Hispanic acculturation levels, in a sample of

Acculturation, Mental Health, and Quality of Life among Hispanic Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Latent Class Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Acculturation appears to be an important aspect of the association between ethnicity and disease, but it has not been explored in depth among childhood cancer survivors (CCS). The purpose of our study was to identify distinct acculturative profiles among Hispanic CCS and to assess differences in quality of life and depressive symptoms. DESIGN: Latent class analysis was used to identify distinct acculturative profiles using 9 indicator items reflecting Hispanic and Anglo cultural orientation. Multinomial logistic regression was performed to explore differences in depressive symptoms
