Postburn Microstomia Prevention Using an Appliance Providing Simultaneous Horizontal and Vertical Adjustable Forces.

Microstomia, an abnormally small oral orifice, is a complication of perioral facial burns. In this case, contraction of the circumoral tissues and hypotonia of the musculature is responsible for this microstomia, which can produce aesthetic and functional impairment with eating, swallowing, communication (speech and facial expressions), compromised dental care and maintenance due to limited oral access, social interactions, and psychological well-being. Conservative management involves providing physical resistance to scar contracture, with opposing horizontal and vertical circumoral forces by

Evaluation of the Oropharyngeal Airway Space in Class II Malocclusion Treated with Mandibular Activator: A Retrospective Study.

AIM: The development of a class II malocclusion is usually related to a reduced oropharyngeal airway space. In order to prevent airway obstruction, functional appliances are commonly used for orthodontic therapy. The aim of the article is to verify if these appliances could positively influence oropharyngeal diameters preventing the onset of future respiratory disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A group of 10 patients treated at the Dental Clinic of San Gerardo Hospital in Monza with mandibular activator was selected. Ten similar untreated class II subjects with retrognathic mandible were used

A modified clear twin block appliance for treatment of class II malocclusion: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Skeletal Class II malocclusion is commonly treated with functional appliances, but bulkiness and discomfort usually affect the compliance. Modifications of these appliances using clear thermoplastic materials could improve comfort and esthetics; though clinical evidence remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical effectiveness of a Modified Twin Block (MTB) appliance, fabricated from 2 mm biocompatible polyethylene terephthalate modified with Glycol (PETG) thermoplastic material, in comparison with the Conventional Twin Block (CTB), for treatment of skeletal Class II due to

Skeletal, dental, and functional effects of headgear-activator therapy on Class II malocclusion in Japanese: a clinical case report.

Ten orthodontic patients in whom a headgear-activator appliance was used in the first phase of treatment for Class II malocclusion were clinically evaluated. All patients had abnormal perioral muscle function at the initial examination. Myofunctional methods were used before and during active treatment. Pretreatment and posttreatment cephalometric tracings were evaluated to examine the effect of the appliance on dental, skeletal, and soft tissue structures. Five of the 10 cases illustrated distal movement of the lower first molar, a phenomenon not mentioned previously in the literature. Growth

Evaluation of head and cervical spine posture after functional therapy with Twin‑Block and Bionator appliances: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of head and cervical spine posture and estimation of sample size. METHODS: Thirty eligible participants who required functional therapy were randomly assigned to the Control group (C), Twin Block group (TB), or the Bionator group (B). Randomization was accomplished by means of blocks of fixed size stratified by sex and age, with the allocations concealed in opaque and sealed envelopes. RESULTS: Significant differences were identified between the pre -and post-functional SNB (p = 0.024) and ANB (p = 0.034) angles in the Twin Block group and SNA (p = 0. 019) and ANB (p =

[The classification of defects in the dental arches of children and orthodontic treatment methods].

Dentition defects occurring in children are classified into 6 classes with subclasses in some of them. Class I includes dentition with defects in the frontal part, class II includes dentitions with distal defects. Both classes include special subclasses for dentition with defects of deciduous teeth, of permanent teeth with underdeveloped roots, and of permanent teeth with mature roots. Non-distal dentition defects (class III) are divided into two subclasses: unilateral and bilateral. Class IV includes dentition with multiple defects in various age groups. Dentition defects combined with maxill

Esthetic outcomes in orthodontics through digital customization with a lingual appliance system.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary fixed orthodontic appliances are shifting from non-customized pre-adjusted appliances to custom-designed and printed appliances with novel digital setup systems. We are one step closer to precision dentistry and orthodontics using personalized mechanics and custom appliances. However, despite the evidential enhancement and other improvements to fixed appliances, tooth movement is still limited to five degrees of freedom. Opening or closing spaces still requires manually placing elastomeric chains or coil springs. AIM: In this article, we aimed to demonstrate how advan

Multidisciplinary treatment of two patients with cleft lip and palate using archwise distraction: A case report.

Distraction osteogenesis is usually performed in cleft lip and palate patients with severe maxillary sagittal discrepancies, considering the stability of surgical maxillary advancement and the limited complications of velopharyngeal valve insufficiency. Moreover, interdental distraction osteogenesis is a successful treatment protocol for repairing large clefts. Herein, we report a multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of two patients with cleft lip and palate using an archwise distraction appliance (AWDA). AWDA is a tooth-supported, custom-made appliance for closing the alveolar cleft a

Cephalometric effects of Twin-block and van Beek Headgear-Activator in the correction of Class II malocclusion.

INTRODUCTION: The Twin-block (TB) and the van Beek Headgear-Activator (vBHGA) are indicated for patients with Class II malocclusion with a retrognathic mandible. Although the former is commonly prescribed for horizontally growing patients, the latter is often recommended for those growing vertically. This study aimed to compare the skeletal, dentoalveolar, and soft-tissue short-term effects of TB and vBHGA, taking growth patterns into account. METHODS: Immediate prefunctional (T1) and postfunctional appliance (T2) lateral cephalometric radiographs were retrospectively obtained for vBHGA (n =

The Effect of Thymus Vulgaris Essential Oil and Chlorhexidine on Candida Albicans Accumulated on Removable Orthodontic Appliance: A Clinical Trial.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Orthodontic removable appliances can facilitate the accumulation of certain microorganisms and microbial plaque on tooth surfaces and appliance components. Since long-term use of chemical agents is not recommended, an alternative option would be medicinal plants for disinfection of the oral cavity. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of thymus vulgaris (T. vulgaris) essential oil to decrease the count of candida albicans (C. albicans) accumulated on removal orthodontic appliances. MATERIALS AND METHOD: In this 2-arm parallel controlled clinical

Comparison of Early Effectiveness of Three Different Intervention Methods in Patients with Chronic Orofacial Pain: A Randomized, Controlled Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Occlusal appliances are still widely used instruments in the management of orofacial pain in dentistry, yet alone or as a part of multimodal therapy. However, some of those modalities have been lacking thorough randomized assessment, and there is a conflicting evidence available. It is hypothesized that pain symptoms might improve faster and in more tangible way due to combined therapy. Also, to our best knowledge, nimesulide was never examined in this aspect, too. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare early effectiveness of routine intervention methods in patients with
