Human adenovirus replication and persistence in hypertrophic adenoids and palatine tonsils in children.

The role of human adenovirus (HAdV) infection in different acute diseases, such as febrile exudative tonsillitis, conjunctivitis, and pharyngoconjunctival fever is well established. However, the relationships, if any, of HAdV persistence and reactivation in the development of the chronic adenotonsillar disease is not fully understood. The present paper reports a 3-year cross-sectional hospital-based study aimed at detecting and quantifying HAdV DNA and mRNA of the HAdV hexon gene in adenoid and palatine tonsil tissues and nasopharyngeal secretions (NPS) from patients with adenotonsillar hypert

Relationship between Otitis Media and Epithelial Function in the Lymphoepithelium of Pediatric Adenoids.

Nose- or nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) has a unique role that is distinct from that of other lymphoid tissues. During upper airway mucosal immune response, NALT induces a variety of responses, including cytokine and chemokine production and innate immune response, to establish acquired immunity. NALT consists of epithelial cells, epithelium-associated lymphoid tissues such as IgA-committed B cells, innate lymphocytes, T helper cells and dendritic cells. Intranasal immunization has recently been shown to effectively induce a proactive immune response in the local mucosa in addit

The Bcl-2 protein expression in germinal centers of hypertrophied adenoids in children.

The aim of this study was to evaluate Bcl-2 expression in the germinal centers of adenoid in children on the assumption that it can be treated as a marker of adenoidal tissue function. The study involved 95 children. The patients were divided into three age groups: aged up to 5, 5-10 and above 10 years. The analysed material were adenoids removed on the grounds of hypertrophy. Immunohistochemical analyses were carried out using monoclonal antibodies (DAKO/Bcl-2, No. M0887) directed against human Bcl-2 protein. The presence of Bcl-2 positive lymphocytes within the lymphoid follicles and Bcl-2 i

The role of adenoids in the development of normal speech following palate repair.

The controversy surrounding the various approaches to palate repair continues unabated. Issues which have been studied relative to the development of normal speech following palate repair have included surgical technique and the timing of surgery. However, regardless of the various refinements in surgery, a percentage of children require secondary surgery to resolve velopharyngeal insufficiency. To date, other factors which might be responsible for the development of normal speech have been ignored. The purpose of this report is to discuss the importance of the relative size of the adenoids in

New Anatomical Adenoid Grading Method-A Nasopharyngoscopic Grading System for Adenoids and Its Clinical Correlation.

OBJECTIVES: To propose a new method for grading adenoids under fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy and discuss its relationship with related clinical symptoms. METHODS: The participants underwent fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy performed by an experienced technician, and several clear images were obtained. The images had to include the nasopharynx from both nostrils and clearly expose the relevant anatomical structures. Two otolaryngologists, one senior and one junior, who were unaware of the children's conditions, graded the adenoid hypertrophy from the images using both the new anatomical adenoid gra

Aerobic and anaerobic bacteriology of adenoids in children: a comparison between patients with chronic adenotonsillitis and adenoid hypertrophy.

Adenoids were obtained from 18 children with chronic adenotonsillitis (Group A) and from 12 others with adenoid hypertrophy (Group B). Patients' ages ranged from 20 months to 15 years (mean 6 years); 18 were males and 12 females. The adenoids were sectioned in half after heat searing of the surface, and the core material was cultured for aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Mixed aerobic and anaerobic flora were obtained from all patients, yielding an average of 7.8 isolates (4.6 anaerobes and 3.2 aerobes) per specimen. There were 97 anaerobes isolated. The predominant isolates in both groups

Impact of rapid palatal expansion on the size of adenoids and tonsils in children.

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid and tonsillar hypertrophy in children often leads to adverse respiratory symptoms and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Current clinical guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery recommend tonsillectomy as the first line of pediatric OSA treatment for children with tonsillar hypertrophy. Rapid palatal expansion (RPE) performed by orthodontists improves obstructive sleep apnea in children by reducing nasal airway resistance, increasing nasal volume, raising tongue posture, and enlarging pharyngeal airway. Muscular, functional and orthodontic changes in pre school children with enlarged adenoids and tonsils.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertrophy of the adenoids and palatine tonsils is the second most frequent cause of upper respiratory obstruction and, consequently, mouth breathing in children. Prolonged mouth breathing leads to muscular and postural alterations which, in turn, cause dentoskeletal changes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine muscular, functional and dentoskeletal alterations in children aged 3-6 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-three children, including 44 with tonsil hypertrophy and 29 controls, were submitted to otorhinolaryngologic, speech pathologic and orthodontic as

Rapid proliferation of B cells from adenoids in response to Epstein-Barr virus infection.

EBV is a human tumor virus that is associated with different types of tumors. A unique feature of EBV is its capability to infect and immortalize human B cells both in vivo and in vitro. In cell culture, this progress is termed immortalization and infected B cells grow out to permanent, so-called lymphoblastoid cell lines. During our experiments, we observed that B lymphocytes derived from adenoids are infected efficiently by EBV and proliferate much more rapidly than any other known type of B cell. High concentrations of adhesion molecules and of CD21, the EBV receptor, present on these cells

Assessment of the nasopharyngeal airway. A rhinomanometric and radiographic study in children with adenoids.

An assessment of the nasopharyngeal airway in 24 children referred to hospital for adenoidectomy was based on symptoms, radiography and rhinomanometry. The only symptom that was significantly correlated to a small size of the nasopharyngeal airway was Snoring. By radiography, measurement of the airway as well as of the depth of soft tissue of the posterior wall was found well correlated to nasal respiratory resistance which was measured by a new technique. By this, rhinomanometry could be performed in all children down to the age of 5 years. Both radiography and rhinomanometry give valuable pa

Single cell transcriptional analysis of human adenoids identifies molecular features of airway microfold cells.

The nasal, oropharyngeal, and bronchial mucosa are primary contact points for airborne pathogens like Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), SARS-CoV-2, and influenza virus. While mucosal surfaces can function as both entry points and barriers to infection, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues (MALT) facilitate early immune responses to mucosal antigens. MALT contains a variety of specialized epithelial cells, including a rare cell type called a microfold cell (M cell) that functions to transport apical antigens to basolateral antigen-presenting cells, a crucial step in the initiation of mucosal immu

Search for Herpesvirus 1 and 2 by in situ hybridization in tonsils and adenoids.

OBJECTIVE: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been described as cause of acute tonsillitis. It has also been found in nasopharyngeal florid lymphoid infiltrate, mostly composed of CD4+, CD56+ T-cells, simulating lymphoma. In spite of its widespread prevalence in latent form, to the best of our knowledge no study is available on in situ detection of HSV in chronically hyperplastic nasopharyngeal lymphoid tissue. The purpose of the present study was to search for the presence of HSV 1 and 2 in 21 adenoids and 15 tonsils from children (2-12 years of age) in which these organs had been surgically remo
