The study examined medical records of 121 medical-surgical inpatients diagnosed with adjustment disorder by psychiatric consultants in a university hospital. Medical illness was the primary stressor, evoking the maladaptive reaction in 83 (68.6%) cases. These patients were largely free of preceding psychiatric problems, suffering protracted hospitalizations for advanced illnesses, particularly malignancy and diabetes; in contrast, the 38 (31.4%) patients whose adjustment disorder was precipitated by a stressor other than medical illness had established psychiatric histories and recurrent probl

In line with the new conceptualization of adjustment disorder (AjD) in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), a new 20-item self-report questionnaire was developed and validated - the Adjustment Disorder-New Module (ADNM). However, such a long research tool has the potential to become problematic for use in epidemiological and clinical settings. Therefore, an ultra-brief measure for AjD (ADNM-4) was established and validated in a recent study conducted with a representative national sample. The aim of the present study was to revalidate the ultra-brief ADNM

OBJECTIVES: Psychiatric comorbidities such as mood, anxiety and adjustment disorders are common among individuals seeking lung transplantation. The objective of this study is to describe the association between these disorders and length of initial hospitalization and number of hospitalizations in the first year following transplantation.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of all lung transplantation patients between January 1, 2008 and July 1, 2014 at a large academic center. We evaluated whether pretransplantation mood, anxiety or adjustment disorders were associated with length

Adjustment Disorders (AD) is a very common mental health problem in primary care. Only general treatment guidelines are available for its treatment. Our research team has developed a cognitive-behavioural treatment (CBT) supported by Virtual reality (EMMA system) that has shown its utility in the treatment of AD. EMMA is a VR adaptive display that adapts its presentation to the patient' therapeutic needs. So far, researchers have been centered on how to use the Information and Communication Technologies to deliver treatment within the therapeutic context. TEO is a completely open Online Emotio

The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) is a simple widely used 5-item measure of disability whose psychometric properties need more analysis in phobic disorders. The reliability, factor structure, validity, and sensitivity to change of the WSAS were studied in 205 phobic patients (73 agoraphobia, 62 social phobia, and 70 specific phobia) who participated in various open and randomized trials of self-exposure therapy. Internal consistency of the WSAS was excellent in all phobics pooled and in agoraphobics and social phobics separately. Principal components analysis extracted a single gener

Adaptation disorders are a heterogeneous group of mental disorders. Although they play a major role in clinical practice, are difficult to treat, and often lead to chronicity and disability, diagnostic algorithms are vague and scientific research is rare. Clinical practice has shown a subtype of adaptation disorder that is characterized primarily by lasting embitterment after exceptional though normal life events which violate basic beliefs. This disorder can be called post-traumatic embitterment disorder (PTED). A case vignette and results of a pilot study are reported. Critical life events w

Adjustment disorder (AjD) is a frequent but under-researched diagnosis due in part to a lack of specific symptom criteria and adequate tools of measurement. The ICD-11 for the first time proposes a positive symptom catalogue to define AjD. This study presents a validation of the Adjustment Disorder - New Module (ADNM), the first symptom severity measure for AjD according to the ICD-11 concept. Validity and sensitivity to change were investigated in a sample of 190 individuals with a DSM-IV diagnosis of AjD. The ADNM scales demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity for anxiety symptoms

INTRODUCTION: Adjustment disorder is the most common mental health diagnosis in the U.S. military and one of the most common globally, yet its patterns and predictors are rarely studied. Identifying career phases and characteristics associated with increased risk of first adjustment disorder (AD) diagnosis among U.S. Army soldiers can inform targeted prevention and intervention efforts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This longitudinal, retrospective cohort study analyzed data from the Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers-Longitudinal Study (STARRS-LS). Administrative medical and pers

INTRODUCTION: This study explored healthcare providers' intentions to diagnose Adjustment Disorder (AjD) in Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs) within the U.S. military, utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a guiding framework.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Focusing on 3 key TPB constructs-attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control-we conducted interviews with fifty healthcare providers experienced in caring for ADSMs. Initial coding involved categorizing data according to these theoretical constructs. This was followed by inductive and deductive thematic analysis to

INTRODUCTION: Reduced superior temporal gyrus (STG) volume is associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but this has not been explored in adjustment disorders. Since adjustment disorders have similar clinical features with MDD and PTSD, it was hypothesized that volume change would also occur in these disorders.
METHODS: In the study, nineteen patients with adjustment disorder and eighteen healthy controls were compared using MRI in terms of the STG and its subregions.
RESULTS: The STG volume of the patient group was found to be significantly re

The ICD-11 has introduced a new conceptualization of adjustment disorder (AjD) as a stress response syndrome with core symptoms of preoccupations and failure to adapt to the stressor. The current study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of the International Adjustment Disorder Questionnaire (IADQ) in two culturally distinct samples from Israel and Switzerland. Two samples were recruited in Israel (N = 1142) and Switzerland (N = 699) during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that a correlated two-factor model provided an excellent fit t

In preparation for ICD-11, the adjustment disorder (AjD) diagnosis has undergone considerable revisions; however, the latent structure of AjD remains uncertain. It is unclear whether AjD is best represented as a unidimensional or multidimensional construct. This study performed a comprehensive assessment of the latent structure of AjD symptomatology and assessed its concurrent and discriminant validity. Individuals who experienced involuntary job loss (N = 333) completed a self-report measure of AjD symptoms. Seven alternative models of AjD were tested using confirmatory factor analysis. Gener

Adjustment disorders (ADs) are under-researched due to the absence of a reliable and valid diagnostic tool. This paper describes the development and content/construct validation of a fully structured interview for the diagnosis of AD, the Diagnostic Interview Adjustment Disorder (DIAD). We developed the DIAD by partly adjusting and operationalizing DSM-IV criteria. Eleven experts were consulted on the content of the DIAD. In addition, the DIAD was administered by trained lay interviewers to a representative sample of disability claimants (n = 323). To assess construct validity of the DIAD, we

Adjustment disorder has been a recognised disorder for decades but has been the subject of little epidemiological research. Now researchers have identified the prevalence of adjustment disorder in primary care, and found general practitioner recognition very low but with high rates of antidepressant prescribing. Possible reasons for the seemingly low prevalence, recognition rate and inappropriate management include its recognition as a residual category in diagnostic instruments and poor delineation from other disorders or from normal stress responses. These problems could be rectified in ICD-

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a stressful life event that increases the risk of developing mental disorders, particularly adjustment disorder (AD). Given the paucity of data on the prevalence of AD symptoms in infertility, the purpose of this study was to ascertain the prevalence, clinical presentation, and risk factors for AD symptoms in infertile women.
METHOD: In a cross-sectional study, 386 infertile women completed questionnaires including the Adjustment Disorder New Module-20 (ADNM), the Fertility Problem Inventory (FPI), the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), and the Primary Care Posttrauma

Adjustment disorder (AD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorders and is generally conceptualized to be mild and short-lived. Despite the frequent use of AD in clinical settings, little is known about the prognosis of this condition. Our goal was to systematically review research on a range of AD outcomes in order to provide a broad characterization of AD prognosis. We conducted searches in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO. We included 31 cohort or randomized controlled trials with a total of 1,385,358 participants. Many patients maintained an AD diagnosis or were diagnosed w

A high percentage of patients have a diagnosis of adjustment disorder (AD) when they arrive at primary care (PC) appointments. However, most of them do not receive adequate psychological treatment. The present study's aim is to determine the efficacy of a group psychological treatment program in patients with AD. The sample consisted of patients with AD from two PC units in Valencia, from which two groups were randomly generated: A treatment group (n = 31) and a waiting-list group (n = 20), homogeneous in terms of socio-demographic and psychometric variables prior to treatment. Treatment consi

BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorder is among the most frequently diagnosed mental disorders in clinical practice although it has received little academic attention and been the subject of substantial criticism over the past decades. While those suffering with adjustment disorders are often treated by mental health professionals, research interest in the origin of the disorder or the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic and medical interventions has only recently begun to emerge. This article summarizes the empirical literature published on adjustment disorder and points out current diagnostic develo
