Trends in hospital admissions for adrenal insufficiency in adolescents and young adults in the 21st century.

BACKGROUND: Very little is known about the epidemiology of adrenal crises (AC) and adrenal insufficiency (AI) in adolescents and young adults. METHODS: Data on all admissions to Australian hospitals between 2000/1 to 2019/20 for a principal diagnosis of AI (including AC) in 10-24 year olds were extracted from a national repository. Age and sex-specific rates and age-adjusted rates were compared. FINDINGS: Over the study, there were 3386 admissions for a principal diagnosis of AI; 24.0% (n=812) were for an AC and 50·7% (n=1718) were for secondary AI. Age-adjusted AI admissions increased from

SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in children and adolescents: Can immunization prevent hospitalization?

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its variants of concern can infect people of all ages and can cause severe diseases in children, such as encephalitis, which require intensive care. Therefore, vaccines are urgently required to prevent severe disease in all age groups. We reviewed the safety and efficacy profiles of mRNA vaccines-BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273-demonstrated by clinical trials or observed in the real world. mRNA-1273 is effective in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection in preschool children (6 months-6 years old). Both BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 are effective i

Positive and negative uses of social media among adolescents hospitalized for suicidal behavior.

INTRODUCTION: There is public concern about potential associations between adolescent social media/smartphone use and risk for suicide. However, no prior studies leverage qualitative methods to explore the experiences of adolescents currently at-risk for suicide. METHODS: This study examined social technology use from the perspectives of adolescents (n = 30; Mage = 16.1 years) currently hospitalized for a recent suicide attempt or severe ideation. We conducted in-depth interviews and coded transcripts using thematic analysis. We had three research questions: What (1) negative and (2) positive

Are postoperative standing radiographs relevant before hospital discharge in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis?

PURPOSE: Postoperative standing radiographs are usually performed before hospital discharge after AIS fusion. However, patients are often still painful and have not recovered yet their physiological balance. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the relevance of such early radiographs and more specifically investigate whether postoperative alignment could be analyzed. METHODS: All consecutive AIS patients operated between January 2015 and December 2015 were included. All patients underwent biplanar stereoradiographs before hospital discharge, at 4 months postoperative and at last fo

Cost analysis of inpatient treatment of anorexia nervosa in adolescents: hospital and caregiver perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Admission to hospital is the treatment of choice for anorexia nervosa in adolescent patients who are medically unstable; however, stays are often prolonged and frequently disrupt normal adolescent development, family functioning, school and work productivity. We sought to determine the costs of inpatient treatment in this population from a hospital and caregiver perspective, and to identify determinants of such costs. METHODS: We used micro-costing methods for this cohort study involving all adolescent patients (age 12-18 yr) admitted for treatment of anorexia nervosa at a tertiar

Body weight as a prognostic factor for day hospital success in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

For female adolescents with anorexia nervosa, body weight at admission as a predictor of treatment outcome in the day hospital setting was examined. A retrospective review of patient charts was completed to determine success or failure in the day hospital program based on weight above or below 85% of ideal body weight. There was not a greater risk of failure in the day hospital program for patients with ideal body weight below 85% compared to those patients with an ideal body weight of ≥ to 85%. Body weight did not predict day hospital success in adolescents with anorexia nervosa in this study
