BACKGROUND: Active transportation (AT; e.g., walking and cycling) is increasingly promoted to increase youth physical activity (PA). Most previous research focused solely on school trips, and associations among AT and cardiovascular risk factors have seldom been examined in adolescents.
PURPOSE: To address these important research gaps using data from the nationally representative 2007-2009 Canadian Health Measures Survey.
METHODS: A total of 1,016 adolescents aged 12-19 years reported their weekly time spent utilitarian walking and cycling, and wore an Actical accelerometer for 7 days. They

This study examined the health concerns and behaviors of 563 adolescents (aged 11 through 14) from a variety of social, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. Behaviors associated with adolescent morbidity and mortality were examined, including sexual behavior, substance use, and injury-related behaviors. Although young adolescents are often viewed as unlikely participants in these risk behaviors, the results of this study suggest that greater attention should be paid to this younger group and their health-risk behaviors. A majority of the sample had tried alcohol and tobacco, and almost a third had

The health problems of 160 adolescents in four residential facilities of the Quebec social welfare court were studied. At the time of admission 44% had at least one problem requiring consultation with a specialist and 80% had an average of two problems requiring primary care. The medical records of 106 youngsters in two re-education centres were also reviewed and similar results were noted. The health services available, particularly physical examination and laboratory testing at the time of admission and arrangements for referral and follow-up were judged to be insufficient in most centres. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The study objective was to understand the relationship between depressive symptoms and demographic, behavioral, and environmental risk variables among adolescents attending school-based health centers (SBHCs) using the Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services (GAPS) questionnaires.
METHODS: Using GAPS questionnaires, we conducted a retrospective medical record review of 672 adolescents attending two Detroit-area school-based health clinics. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to determine which factors were associated with depressive symptoms whi

This paper reviews emerging research findings related to the biological, behavioral, psychological and social processes that occur during adolescence. New research makes it possible to identify interactions among brain structures, hormonal production and behavioral impulses, that underpin and explain the connections with serious problems emerging during adolescence: behavioral disorders, substance abuse, risky sexual conduct, violence and other social disorders.

PURPOSE: To investigate mental health in Iranian adolescents, particularly in high school students from urban areas.
METHOD: A sample of 4599 girls and boys was selected from third year classes from high schools in Tehran by a stratified cluster random sampling method. They were investigated by means of the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) in a cross-sectional study. Following the recommendations of Goldberg et al, the chosen cut-off point for the differentiation between individuals with and without psychiatric morbidity was a score of 7 because of the high mean score within the

Pertussis in adolescents and adults is common, endemic, and epidemic worldwide, and its incidence is reportedly increasing. Although a number of individuals suffer only a mild cough, many others have symptoms typical of pertussis, causing prolonged cough illness, frequent use of health care resources, missed work and a variety of complications. Symptoms experienced by adolescents and adults include sleep disturbance, weight loss, pharyngeal discomfort, influenza-like symptoms, sneezing attacks, hoarseness, sinus pain, headaches and sweating attacks. Even when symptoms are typical of pertussis,

BACKGROUND: The UK has the highest rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), especially among young people, in western Europe. Knowledge of what influences young people's sexual behaviour is limited which highlights a need to understand adolescent development and recognise that they are at increased risk of acquiring an STI compared with other groups. This article examines the risks of acquiring STIs in adolescence and discusses how nurses feel about treating young people with sexual health needs.
CONCLUSION: Postgraduate training needs to incorporate specific modules relating to young

Most homeless teenagers are running away from abusive or violent home situations. Many of the daily survival tactics employed by runaways put them at risk for a variety of medical problems, including sexually transmitted diseases, hepatitis, tuberculosis, trauma, accidents, and HIV infection. Mental health issues of depression, low self-esteem, hostility, and suicidal behavior or ideation are common and may be compounded by drug abuse or addiction. Barriers to obtaining care for the uninsured homeless teenager encompass confidentiality issues, minor status, and general distrust of adult author

The prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases in children and adolescents are most desirable and the physician should be involved in the achievement of these goals. Furthermore, cooperation between the physician and the dentist may be imperative for the comprehensive treatment of some patients. One should be aware of the influence of the general growth and development of the periodontium in order to be able to differentiate between health and disease. Periodontal diseases in children and adolescents include chronic gingivitis, gingival recession, chronic periodontitis, prepubertal perio

Lifestyle factors established within the family help determine health-care functioning. Adolescents first may be challenged to meet their own health needs as freshmen in college. A 153-item questionnaire was utilized to examine concerns in the areas of alcohol and other drug use, auto safety, weight and dieting, smoking, sexuality, coping and stress, and selection and utilization of health-care services. One hundred fifty-nine male college students responded. Major problems with alcohol use, auto safety, weight control, stress and sexuality were identified. Positive lifestyle factors that were

Adolescent health care has been structured around present-focused approaches: rights, holistic health, risk, and gender. These frameworks have led to substantial progress, but they share a limitation: they describe the adolescent's current state without offering a systematic way to project their future trajectory. We present the prospective-dynamic approach, a conceptual framework that integrates these frameworks with an explicit temporal orientation and draws on self-determination theory, motivational interviewing, the future-oriented perspective on adolescent development, the life-course per

BACKGROUND: Menstrual poverty (MP) defines the lack of access to menstrual health management (MHM) due to financial barriers, and there are limited data regarding its effects on youth mental health. The purpose of this study was to assess MHM practices among adolescents, determine the prevalence of MP according to socioeconomic status and examine its association with depressive symptoms (DS).
METHODS: We conducted a survey on a nationally drawn sample (N = 1241) of adolescents aged 10-19 years. Data were collected from 12 provinces, which were classified into three (Tiers 5-6 having the lowes
