Molecular and antimicrobial susceptibility characterization of Globicatella sulfidifaciens isolated from sow's urinary tract infection.

BACKGROUND: The Globicatella genus comprises Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, α-hemolytic and catalase negative cocci morphologically and phenotypically very similar to Streptococcus and Aerococcus genus which can lead to misidentification and underestimation of this pathogen. Globicatella species have already been isolated from human and animals with heart and brain disorders. Their clinical relevance in animals, and its zoonotic potential, remains unknown due to the difficulty in their identification. OBJECTIVE: To present the isolation, phenotypic and molecular characterization of G.

Ofloxacin for prevention of bacterial infections in granulocytopenic patients.

We studied the potential value of oral ofloxacin (200 mg twice daily) for selective decontamination and infection prevention in 40 granulocytopenic patients with acute leukemia, blast crisis of chronic myelogenous leukemia, hairy cell leukemia or severe aplastic anemia. The quality of selective decontamination was acceptable with rapid elimination of Enterobacteriaceae from the alimentary tract, only a slight decrease in concentrations of anaerobes in faeces, and a small number of newly acquired transient (twelve isolates in seven patients) or colonizing (six strains with 28 isolates in four p

Nanopore and Self-Assembled Monolayer Engineering of l-Lactate Oxidase Gold Electrodes for Enhanced l-Lactate Biosensing.

Nanoporous architectures offer unique opportunities to spatially organize biocatalysts while preserving efficient interfacial charge transfer. Here, we introduce a tiered enzyme-electrode interface based on nanoporous gold (np-Au) that enables high-density, activity-retaining immobilization of lactate oxidase for sensitive l-lactate detection. The np-Au scaffold, prepared by controlled dealloying of Ag-Au, exhibits average pore diameter of ∼170 nm, providing geometric confinement compatible with the tetrameric structure of Aerococcus viridans l-lactate oxidase (LOx). A mixed self-assembled mon

16S rDNA-Based Amplicon Analysis Unveiled a Correlation Between the Bacterial Diversity and Antibiotic Resistance Genes of Bacteriome of Commercial Smokeless Tobacco Products.

The distribution of bacterial-derived antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in smokeless tobacco products is less explored and encourages understanding of the ARG profile of Indian smokeless tobacco products. Therefore, in the present investigation, ten commercial smokeless tobacco products were assessed for their bacterial diversity to understand the correlation between the inhabitant bacteria and predicted ARGs using a 16S rDNA-based metagenome analysis. Overall analysis showed the dominance of two phyla, i.e., Firmicutes (43.07%) and Proteobacteria (8.13%) among the samples, where Bacillus (9.

Association of vaginal microbiome, cytokines, and spontaneous preterm birth among Chinese women: a nested case-control study.

An imbalance of the vaginal microbiome and dysregulation of cytokines are associated with spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB). To date, the relationship between the vaginal microbiome, cytokines, and sPTB remains unclear in the Chinese population. Herein, we conducted a nested case-control study using data from a prospective cohort of 749 Chinese women with a singleton pregnancy who were enrolled between 16 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. Cases consisted of individuals experiencing sPTB (n = 38), while controls were selected randomly at a 4:1 ratio to cases (n = 152). Compared to the term group, the s

Evaluation of the microbiological quality of some natural honeys and determination of their antibacterial activity.

Antibiotic resistance is a major concern for health systems worldwide, due to the irrational use of antibiotics. Honey can be considered an alternative therapy to antibiotics. Our study aims to evaluate the microbiological quality and presumed antibacterial activity of 7 natural honeys of different floral origins. Aerobic bacteria grew in 3 samples of honey: (jujube honey ( Bacillus subtilis ), fig honey ( Staphylococcus hominis , S. epidermidis, and S. pettenkoferi ) and holm oak honey ( Aerococcus viridans )). Only holm oak honey contained a yeast ( Cryptococcus neoformans ), while the other

The Urinary Microbiome of Older Adults Residing in a Nursing Home Varies With Duration of Residence and Shows Increases in Potential Pathogens.

The community of bacteria that colonize the urinary tract, the urinary microbiome, is hypothesized to influence a wide variety of urinary tract conditions. Older adults who reside in nursing homes are frequently diagnosed and treated for urinary tract conditions such as urinary tract infection. We investigated the urinary microbiome of older adults residing in a nursing home to determine if there are features of the urinary microbiome that are associated with specific conditions and exposure in this population. We were also interested in the stability of urinary microbiome over time and in sim

Integrated microbiome and metabolome unveiled the effect of carbonate buffer mixture alleviating subacute rumen acidosis - Mediated endometritis in dairy goats.

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a prevalent metabolic disorder in ruminants, often associated with systemic inflammatory responses triggered by elevated levels of lipopolysaccharides (LPS). This study aimed to evaluate whether a carbonate buffer mixture (CBM) could alleviate SARA-induced endometritis in dairy goats by modulating the microbiota and metabolic profiles. A total of 30 healthy lactating dairy goats with similar body weight were selected for the experiment. Inflammatory markers were assessed in both uterine tissue and serum. The microbial communities in the rumen and uterus were

Changes in the cervicovaginal microbiota composition of HPV16-infected patients after clinical treatment.

BACKGROUND: High-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) infection is a key factor that alters cervicovaginal microbiota patterns and causes cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINs) or even cervical cancer. Although local excisional treatment can clear hrHPV infection and restore the cervicovaginal microbiota, it is unclear which cervicovaginal microbiota represents recovery. Our objective was to describe the cervicovaginal microbiota before and after treatments and to assess the association between the microbiota and HPV persistence. RESULTS: A cohort of 91 participants was classified into four
