Subjective Neurophysiological Perception and Behavioral Avoidance in Women with Fibromyalgia: An Analysis of Pain and Affective Symptoms.

This study examined associations among pain intensity, psychological distress, neurophysiological perception, and avoidance behaviors in women with FMS. Participants included 120 women with FMS and 110 age-matched healthy controls who completed the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), Cognitive Behavioral Avoidance Scale (CBAS), and Neurophysiological Perception Scale (NPS). Independent t-tests, Pearson correlations, and multivariate logistic regression were performed. Compared to controls, FMS participants had significantly higher VAS, DASS-21, and CBAS score

The NLRP3 inflammasome as a key pathway in the affective and chronic fatigue symptoms of Long COVID.

BACKGROUND: The neuropsychiatric and somatic manifestations (physio-affective phenome) of Long COVID are substantially predicted by elevated peak body temperature (PBT) and diminished oxygen saturation (SpO2) during the acute infectious stage. The latter is linked to the immune pathophysiology of Long COVID involving activation of the immune-inflammatory response system (IRS) and the nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat and pyrin domain-containing receptor 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. Nevertheless, there is a lack of data indicating whether NLRP3 and its components are implicated in the ph

Exploratory Analysis of Respiratory Variability in Relation to Disease Impact, Affective Symptoms, and Pain Sensitivity in Fibromyalgia.

PURPOSE: Fibromyalgia is a complex multisystem disorder characterized by generalized chronic pain. While its etiology remains largely unclear, neuroinflammation, chronic stress, and autonomic dysregulation may play significant roles. Resultantly, respiratory patterns could serve as both a biomarker and a therapeutic target in fibromyalgia. We hypothesized that fibromyalgia impact, anxiety, depression, pain intensity, and pain sensitivity are associated with reduced respiratory variability. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this observational study, twenty-three female participants with fibromyalgia co

Neural correlates of cognitive and affective processing in maltreated youth with posttraumatic stress symptoms: does gender matter?

We investigated the relationship of gender to cognitive and affective processing in maltreated youth with posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Maltreated (N = 29, 13 females, 16 males) and nonmaltreated participants (N = 45, 26 females, 19 males) performed an emotional oddball task that involved detection of targets with fear or scrambled face distractors. Results were moderated by gender. During the executive component of this task, left precuneus/posterior middle cingulate hypoactivation to fear versus calm or scrambled face targets were seen in

Affective forecasting and self-rated symptoms of depression, anxiety, and hypomania: evidence for a dysphoric forecasting bias.

Emerging research has examined individual differences in affective forecasting; however, we are aware of no published study to date linking psychopathology symptoms to affective forecasting problems. Pitting cognitive theory against depressive realism theory, we examined whether dysphoria was associated with negatively biased affective forecasts or greater accuracy. Participants (n=325) supplied predicted and actual emotional reactions for three days surrounding an emotionally evocative relational event, Valentine's Day. Predictions were made a month prior to the holiday. Consistent with cogni

Cardiovascular symptoms affect the patterns of habitual coffee consumption.

BACKGROUND: Excessive coffee consumption can lead to unpleasant sensations such as tachycardia and heart palpitations. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to investigate if cardiovascular symptoms can lead to alterations in habitual patterns of coffee consumption. METHODS: We used information from up to 390,435 European ancestry participants in the UK Biobank, aged 39-73 y. Habitual coffee consumption was self-reported, and systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and heart rate were measured at baseline. Cardiovascular symptoms at baseline were based on hospital diagnoses, primary

Vaginal symptoms in women who are affected by gynecologic cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pelvic floor disorders are common among gynecologic cancer survivors. With improvements in survivorship, quality of life conditions in these women need greater attention and care. This review focuses specifically on vulvovaginal symptoms, which are common and have a negative impact on sexual health and quality of life in women affected by gynecologic cancer. RECENT FINDINGS: We review publications on treatment-specific sexual health outcomes, screening and treatment of vulvovaginal symptoms and sexual pain, and surgical management options. Recent evidence regarding the safe

AFFECT, SYMPTOM, FANTASY, DREAM: CLINICAL AND THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS.

A symptom being studied in the process of analysis can be seen as not unlike the unconscious affect it sprang from. The author presents a case in which a symptom, premature ejaculation, was analogous to the unconscious affect of guilt, which itself seemed to be a premature defensive transformation of a deeper current of anger. Guilt was interpreted as if it were a psychic premature ejaculation, a defensive derailment of anger. Fantasy and dream seemed to be engaged in similar transformations, with a fantasy of "premature incarceration" not unlike the symptom itself in its analogous functioning

Emotion dysregulation and negative affect: association with psychiatric symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of research focuses on the development and correlates of emotion dysregulation, or deficits in the ability to regulate intense and shifting emotional states. Current models of psychopathology have incorporated the construct of emotion dysregulation, suggesting its unique and interactive contributions, along with childhood disruptive experiences and negative affect, in producing symptomatic distress. Some researchers have suggested that emotion dysregulation is simply a variant of high negative affect. The aim of this study was to assess the construct and incremental v

Total, somatic, and cognitive-affective depressive symptoms trajectories and urinary incontinence: Evidence from two national longitudinal cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Depression is increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to urinary incontinence (UI). Unlike single time-point assessments, longitudinal trajectories of depressive symptoms may yield deeper insights into their relationship with UI. This study examined the association between long-term depressive symptom trajectories and UI. METHODS: We included participants with complete data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). UI was defined as any involuntary leakage within the past 12 months. Depressive symptoms were measured

Childhood adversities and long-term sleep problems: The mediating role of affective symptoms. A prospective population study.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are known to impact mental and physical health. In cross-sectional population studies, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) associate with sleep problems (SPs), with potential variations by sex. In a prospective population study, we tested whether the effect of ACEs on SPs differs between males and females. METHOD: In a Finnish population-based study, 3142 individuals aged 30-64 years (56 % female) completed questionnaires about ACEs in 2000 and SPs in 2000 and in 2011. The effects of ACEs on SPs were analysed using repeated measures ANOVA and path analyses.

Apathy and affective symptoms associated with elevated plasma neurofilament light but not p-tau181 in Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Apathy and affective neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are prevalent in Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet their neurobiological cause is still unclear. We examined associations between plasma neurofilament light chain (NfL) and tau pathology (p-tau181) with apathy and affective symptoms in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD dementia. METHODS: This longitudinal study analyzed data from 781 participants with MCI and AD dementia enrolled in ADNI, with annual blood samples collected over 4 years. NPS were assessed via the Neuropsychiatric Interview (NPI), and biomarker trajectories we

A mouse model of non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease: focus on pharmacological interventions targeting affective dysfunctions.

Non-motor symptoms, including psychiatric disorders, are increasingly recognized as a major challenge in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). These ailments, which often appear in the early stage of the disease, affect a large number of patients and are only partly resolved by conventional antiparkinsonian medications, such as L-DOPA. Here, we investigated non-motor symptoms of PD in a mouse model based on bilateral injection of the toxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in the dorsal striatum. This model presented only subtle gait modifications, which did not affect horizontal motor activity

A prospective study of the trajectories of clinical insight, affective symptoms, and cognitive ability in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Clinical insight in bipolar disorder is associated with treatment adherence and psychosocial outcome. The short-term dynamics of clinical insight in relationship to symptoms and cognitive abilities are unknown. METHODS: In a prospective observational study, a total of 106 outpatients with bipolar disorder I or II were assessed at baseline, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 26 weeks. Participants were administered a comprehensive neuropsychological battery, clinical ratings of manic and depressive symptom severity, and self-reported clinical insight. An affective dimension within oppositional defiant disorder symptoms among boys: personality and psychopathology outcomes into early adulthood.

BACKGROUND: A dimension of negatively oriented affect within oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms, which has been described as irritability, has been shown to predict depression and anxiety. Related constructs have been linked to temperament and personality constructs. However, only a few studies have examined the prediction from irritability within ODD to psychopathology or personality outcomes. Further, no studies have investigated whether irritability distinguishes among classes of youth. METHODS: Data from a clinic-referred sample of 7-12-year-old boys followed up to age 18 were u
