Aflatoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain molds, primarily Aspergillus species, which can contaminate crops such as grains and nuts. These toxins pose a significant health risk to animals and humans. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most potent of these compounds and has been well-characterized to lead to diminished growth and feed efficiency by disrupting nutrient absorption and metabolism in poultry. AFB1 can trigger apoptosis and inflammation, leading to a decline in immune function and changes in blood biochemistry in poultry. Recently, there has been growing interest in using microalga

The toxicity of the contaminated powder contributed to toxic aflatoxins has been well-known in the literature. However, before this study, the specific fungal strain behind aflatoxin production remained unidentified. Our research aimed to isolate and identify fungi from the tainted sandwiches while also assessing the preservation of sandwiches in ambient conditions. The study pinpointed Aspergillus flavus as the fungus responsible for aflatoxin production. Analysis revealed that the sandwich samples contaminated with pure A. flavus exhibited a significant Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) concentration of 5

Aflatoxins are mycotoxins produced by Aspergillus flavus and several other related organisms and are common contaminants of numerous grains and nuts, especially maize (corn) and peanuts. Although, undoubtedly, aflatoxins have been present in the food of humans for millennia, their toxic effects were not discovered until 1960, first becoming evident as a non-infectious outbreak of poisoning of turkeys (Turkey X disease) arising from contaminated groundnut meal. The elucidation of specific chemical structures in 1963 led to the rapid characterization of aflatoxins as among the most potent chemic

This article developed a novel electrochemical immunosensor for the specific detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Amino-functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3 O4 -NH2 ) were synthesized. Fe3 O4 -NH2 were chemically bound on self-assembly monolayers (SAMs) of mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA). Finally, polyclonal antibodies (pAb) were immobilized on Fe3 O4 -NH2 -MBA. The sensor system was evaluated through atomic force microscopy (AFM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A reduction in the anodic and cathodic peak currents was observed after the assembly of t

Aflatoxins are poisonous byproducts of the soilborne fungus Aspergillus, involved in the decomposition of plant materials. Aflatoxins can be found in various food products, such as maize, sorghum, millet, rice and wheat. AFB1 is the most toxic of these, classified as a carcinogen and mutagen for both humans and animals. AFB1 has been detected in human cord blood and placenta; however, its toxic effect on sperm is less known. The current study examines sperm responses associated with AFB1 exposure. These included acrosome integrity and function, mitochondrial polarity, DNA fragmentation, fertil

Aflatoxin exposure is an important public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa as well as parts of Latin America and Asia. In addition to hepatocellular carcinoma, chronic aflatoxin exposure is believed to play a role in childhood growth impairment. The most reliable biomarker of chronic aflatoxin exposure is the aflatoxin-albumin adduct, as measured by ELISA or isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). In this report, we have used high resolution LC-MS/MS with IDMS to quantitate AFB1-lysine in an extremely vulnerable population of Nigerian children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. T

Zinc concentrations strongly influence aflatoxin accumulation in laboratory media and in food and feed crops. The presence of zinc stimulates aflatoxin production, and the absence of zinc impedes toxin production. Initial studies that suggested a link between zinc and aflatoxin biosynthesis were presented in the 1970s. In the present study, we utilized two zinc chelators, N,N,N',N'-tetrakis (2-pyridylmethyl) ethane-1,2-diamine (TPEN) and 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS) to explore the effect of zinc limitation on aflatoxin synthesis in Aspergillus parasiticus. TPEN but not DMPS dec

The main objective of this study was to determine if the competitive adsorption of tryptophan (Trp) and aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) could potentially affect the ability of a sodium bentonite (NaB) to prevent aflatoxicosis in monogastric animals. The adsorption of Trp and AFB₁ on this adsorbent is fast and could be operating on the same time-scale making competition feasible. In vitro competitive adsorption experiments under simulated gastrointestinal conditions were performed. A high affinity of the clay for Trp and NaB was observed. The effect of an excess of KCl to mimic the ionic strength of the ph

The enzymatic degradation of aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)) by white rot fungi through laccase production was investigated in different liquid media. A significant (P<0.0001) correlation was observed between laccase activity and AFB(1) degradation exhibited by representatives of Peniophora and Pleurotus ostreatus cultivated in minimal salts (MSM) (r=0.93) and mineral salts - malt extract (MSB-MEB) (r=0.77) liquid media. Peniophora sp. SCC0152 cultured in MSB-MEB liquid medium supplemented with veratryl alcohol and sugarcane bagasse showed high laccase activity (496U/L), as well as 40.45% AFB(1) degra

With the background that the foodborne mycotoxin aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)) could be toxic to the male reproductive mechanism in man as well as wild and domestic animals, the present study was aimed at finding the effect of AFB(1) on sperm. The Swiss albino mouse was the test animal. AFB(1,) suspended in corn oil and ethanol (95:5, v/v), was administered intraperitoneally to 90-day-old mice at a daily dose of 50 microg/kg body weight for 7, 15, 35 and 45 days. The analysis consisted of fertility testing and counts, motility and abnormalities of the cauda epididymidal sperm, adopting light- as wel

Projects funded by International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada and the European Commission have enabled the examination of more than 3000 samples of maize collected from all regions of Costa Rica at different stages, from the growing crop through storage to final sale, and at different water contents. Contamination with Aspergillus flavus was frequent and about 80% of samples contained more than 20 ng aflatoxins g(-1) grain. Average contamination with aflatoxins in the Brunca Region was > 274 ng g(-1) while that in other regions was < 70 ng g(-1). Except in Brunca region, where

The urinary excretion of aflatoxins in normal children from a periurban area, as well as those hospitalized with kwashiorkor and marasmus was assessed. In no case was aflatoxin isolated from the urine. It is concluded that aflatoxin exposure is unusual in this population and that aflatoxins do not play a primary role in the pathogenesis of kwashiorkor.

Since the early 1960s, when aflatoxin, the mold-produced contaminant of a number of important food commodities, was found to be a potent hepatocarcinogen for laboratory rats, there has been a sustained search for evidence to support the regulatory presumption that aflatoxin is a probable human carcinogen. The developing laboratory evidence of differences between species in metabolism of aflatoxin and susceptibility to its oncogenic effects indicated that humans were probably refractory to aflatoxin carcinogenesis, but the early epidemiological evidence indicated otherwise. That epidemiological

A method is described for the simultaneous detection of alfatoxin and zearalenone in corn at 5 and 200 ppb, respectively. No evaporation of solvent is required and the procedure is simple enough to be considered for use at marketing locations. The presence of absence of these myocotoxins can be determined in 10-20 min/sample. The procedure involves an initial blender extraction with methanol, partitioning of fat and pigments into 1-1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (Freon-113) from an aqueous ammonium sulfate layer, followed by extraction of aflatoxin from the aqueous layer with chlorobenzene. Aflatoxins, particularly aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), are among the most potent naturally occurring carcinogens and remain a major food-borne hazard in parts of Asia and Africa. China has generated a uniquely cohesive body of evidence connecting aflatoxin contamination to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), especially in settings where chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is highly prevalent and acts synergistically with aflatoxin exposure. Over five decades, field investigations and laboratory innovations-exemplified by long-term work in Qidong-have assembled a multi-layered causal chain spanning th

Mycotoxins, which are toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi, contaminate a wide range of food and feed items and represent significant health concerns to both humans and animals. The most potent and widespread of these are aflatoxins (AFs), particularly Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), which is commonly found in peanuts, cottonseed, spices, animal feed, and milk. AFB1 is linked to liver cancer, immunosuppression, reproductive problems, and growth retardation, particularly in poultry, cattle, and humans. Aflatoxin (AF) resistance to conventional detoxification treatments is frequently caused by its

Gall bladder cancer (GBC) is common among the socioeconomically deprived populations of certain geographical regions. Aflatoxin is a genotoxic hepatocarcinogen, which is recognized to have a role in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the role of aflatoxin in the pathogenesis of GBC is largely unknown. We determined serum AFB1-Lys albumin adduct (AAA) levels as a marker of aflatoxin exposure in the patients with GBC and compared to those without GBC. The relationship of AAA levels to cytogenetic (TP53mutation&HER2/neu amplification) and radiological characteristics of the tu
