Age of onset of life-time mental disorders and treatment contact.

BACKGROUND: Early onset of mental disorders is a major social and public health concern as it affects individuals in their most formative years. The impact is more pronounced when early onset is also associated with treatment delay. Little is known about the age of onset (AOO) for mental disorders and its predictors in Singapore. METHOD: A national mental health survey was conducted among adult residents aged 18 years and above in Singapore. The composite international diagnostic interview (CIDI 3.0) was used to establish the life-time diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD), dysthymia,

[Clinical heterogeneity of Alzheimer's disease according to the age of onset].

INTRODUCTION: The age of onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been linked to the degree of clinical heterogeneity. Some studies have suggested that the presenile and senile forms may be different conditions. AIM: To describe the clinical and developmental characteristics of patients with AD according to the age of onset. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A clinical sample of AD patients was evaluated by means of the Cambridge Examination for Mental Disorders of the Elderly protocol together with other tests and clinical scales (Trail Making Test, Neuropsychiatric Inventory, Rapid-Disability Rating Scal

Using age of onset to distinguish between subforms of breast cancer.

Information on family history and age of onset of breast cancer is examined in an attempt to distinguish between postulated early and late onset forms of breast cancer and to estimate the familial correlation between any subforms that may exist. Data are taken from the Cancer and Steroid Hormone Study, a multicentre, population-based, case-control study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The data set includes 4730 histologically confirmed breast cancer cases aged 20-54 and 4688 controls who were frequency-matched to cases by geographic region and five-year categories of age. D

Psychosocial correlates in treatment seeking gamblers: Differences in early age onset gamblers vs later age onset gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Age of onset is an important factor in the development and trajectory of psychiatric disorders; however, little is known regarding the age of onset in relation to disordered gambling in treatment seeking samples in the UK. Utilising a large residential treatment seeking gambler cohort, the current study examined the relationship between age of gambling onset and a range of variables thought to be associated with disordered gambling. METHOD: Data were collected from 768 gamblers attending residential treatment for disordered gambling. Individuals were grouped per the age they start

Age at onset of DSM-IV pathological gambling in a non-treatment sample: Early- versus later-onset.

BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling (PG) is a prevalent and impairing public health problem. In this study we assessed age at onset in men and women with PG and compared the demographic and clinical picture of early- vs. later-onset individuals. We also compared age at onset in PG subjects and their first-degree relatives with PG. METHOD: Subjects with DSM-IV PG were recruited during the conduct of two non-treatment clinical studies. Subjects were evaluated with structured interviews and validated questionnaires. Early-onset was defined as PG starting prior to age 33years. RESULTS: Age at onse

Early-onset alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use with age at onset of hypertension: a survival analysis.

PURPOSE: To examine the associations of age when first substance use and early-onset substance use before age 18 with age at onset (AAO) of hypertension. METHODS: This study included 19,270 individuals with AAO of hypertension from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Age when first use of 10 substance use variables included alcohol, daily cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), inhalants, and methamphetamine use. The outcome was AAO of hypertension and variable cluster analysis was used to classify the expos

Early onset multiple sclerosis and the effect of disease onset age on neurological disability in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: The incidence of early onset multiple sclerosis (EOMS) is increasing. We therefore aimed to compare the demographic, clinical, and magnetic resonance imaging features of early onset and adult onset multiple sclerosis patients. Furthermore, the effects of age of onset were evaluated for patients who reached an expanded disability status scale (EDSS) scores of six. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of MS patient medical charts between 1977 and 2021, which were registered in the MS database. Only patients with relapsing remitting MS longer than 1 year were included

Age at onset is associated with the seasonal pattern of onset and exacerbation in inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors are suggested to affect the pathogenesis of several diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The seasonality of disease onset and exacerbation in IBD, however, are not well established. We herein aimed to clarify the disease seasonality and to investigate the underlying characteristics in IBD patients exhibiting seasonality of the disease course. METHODS: This was a multicenter observational study comprising 20 institutions (Osaka Gut Forum) in Japan. Data were collected from November 2013 to August 2014 using survey forms for physicians and ques

Genome screen for loci influencing age at onset and rate of decline in late onset Alzheimer's disease.

We performed an affected sib-pair (ASP) linkage analysis to test for the effects of age at onset (AAO), rate of decline (ROD), and Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype on linkage to late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) in a sample comprising 428 sib-pairs. We observed linkage of mean AAO to chromosome 21 in the whole sample (max LOD = 2.57). This came entirely from the NIMH sample (max LOD = 3.62), and was strongest in pairs with high mean AAO (>80). A similar effect was observed on chromosome 2q in the NIMH sample (max LOD = 2.73); this region was not typed in the IADC/UK sample. Suggestive eviden

Age at onset and symptom spread in primary adult-onset blepharospasm and cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: The site of dystonia onset is known to affect the risk of spread in primary adult-onset focal dystonia, but other factors possibly influencing spread are unknown. This study explored the relationship between age and spread of dystonia in primary adult-onset focal dystonia. METHODS: Two survival models analyzed spread of dystonia in a large cohort of patients with primary blepharospasm (BSP) and cervical dystonia. The first model was based on time interval between onset and spread of dystonia, and the second model was based on age at spread. RESULTS: Patients presenting with BSP h

An Exploratory Study on the Onset Age of Child Sexual Abuse: A Comparison of Childhood and Adolescence Onset.

Research on child sexual abuse has predominantly focused on cases that typically begin in early childhood. By contrast, sexual abuse and boundary violations that first occur during adolescence have received comparatively little attention. This study aims to analyze the similarities and differences in the age of abuse onset in childhood and adolescence, considering victim characteristics and abuse-related factors. The study is based on anonymously collected data from the German Sexual Abuse Telephone Helpline covering the years 2016 to 2024. The sample comprises 1,935 reported cases of sexual a

Burden of psychiatric disease inversely correlates with Alzheimer's age at onset.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is regarded as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Associations between AD and other psychiatric disorders are less clear. METHODS: We screened 1,500 AD UCSF Memory and Aging Center patients for prevalence of psychiatric disorders and compared results to 8,267 NACC AD participants. RESULTS: AD with depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder were significantly younger at age at onset than AD without (p < 0.001; p < 0.001; p < 0.05). Comorbidity of depression, anxiety and PTSD led to further decreases in AD age at onset. Within the NACC cohort, we f

New-Onset Age of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Cancer Risk.

IMPORTANCE: The onset age of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is decreasing, and whether earlier ages of NAFLD onset are associated with increased cancer risk is currently unclear. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between NAFLD new-onset age and cancer risk. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted among 179 328 participants included in the Kailuan Cohort Study between 2006 and 2021. In total, 46 100 incident NAFLD cases were identified. For each case, a participant matched by age (older or younger by 1 year) and sex was randomly selected to create a ne

[Neuropsychological differences in Alzheimer's disease depending on the age of onset].

INTRODUCTION: Early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) has been defined as a dementia due to AD presenting before the arbitrarily established age of 65 (as opposed to late-onset Alzheimer's disease or LOAD). There is still little research about other age sub-groups, the use of so-called senile dementia has been banished, usually including it within the late-onset Alzheimer's dementia. To the extent of our knowledge, there are no studies comparing the neuropsychological features of very-late-onset patients with early and late-onset ones. METHODS: We retrospectively selected 359 patients with a d

Age and symptoms at onset of ankylosing spondylitis in Japanese patients.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the age at onset and initial symptoms as clinical features of ankylosing spondylitis in Japanese patients. METHODS: This retrospective study included 60 Japanese patients diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis at our institute between January 2004 and June 2021. Initial symptoms were considered pain in axial joints and/or extra-axial joints. If a patient had initial symptoms at multiple sites, each site was counted. We assessed trends for the number of patients and sites of initial symptoms according to age at onset. RESULTS: Mean age (± standard deviation) at onset was

Age of onset by sex in schizophrenia: Proximal and distal characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Earlier schizophrenia onset in men relative to women has been a consistent finding in the literature, but a nuanced understanding of underlying reasons remains elusive. Further consideration should be given to factors associated with sex differences in age of onset. METHOD: Participants with schizophrenia were derived from the 2010 Australian Survey of High Impact Psychosis (n = 857). The SHIP survey constituted a representative, population-based study of almost 1.5 million Australian adults seen at various mental health services, and assessed personal health information, psychiat

Clinical Phenotypes of Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia by Age at Onset.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is generally considered a young-onset dementia, although age at onset is highly variable. While several studies indicate clinical differences regarding age at onset, no biomarker validated cohort studies with updated clinical criteria have been performed. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine behavior, cognition, and mortality over the full age spectrum in a cohort of bvFTD patients with neuroimaging, genetic, or histopathological confirmation and exclusion of positive Alzheimer's disease biomarkers or severe cerebrovascular damage.
