"Move or Suffer": Is Age-Segregation the New Norm for Older Americans Living Alone?

Despite ethical claims that civic societies should foster intergenerational integration, age-segregation is a widespread yet understudied phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to understand the reasons that led community-dwelling older Americans to relocate into senior housing. Qualitative data were collected through participant observation and ethnographic interviews with 47 older adults living alone in San Francisco, California. Half of study participants lived in housing for seniors, the other half in conventional housing. Data were analyzed with standard qualitative methods. Findings i

Beyond the classroom: a qualitative study of voluntary home visits to older adults as a tool for empathy and professional growth in medical students.

Global populations are rapidly aging, posing significant challenges. Yet, ageism among clinicians and medical students persists, undermining empathy and care quality. Traditional short-term educational efforts have limited effect; sustained, relationship-based programs hold promise but remain understudied. To address this, we implemented a year-long service-learning project, where first-year medical students visit elderly individuals at their homes to engage in light physical activities and discuss life challenges. This qualitative study examines the project's impact on first, second, and thir

"When I Need to Travel, I Feel Feverish": Everyday Experiences of Transport Inequalities Among Older Adults in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Buses are the most common form of public transport for older adults in developing countries. With over 37% of total trips, buses are the principal mode of transport in Dhaka. The majority of older adults are dependent on buses because of their affordability relative to other modes such as auto-rickshaws, rideshares, and taxis. This study aims to investigate key barriers in accessing buses in Dhaka and the consequences of these barriers to the everyday mobility of older adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Thirty participants aged 60 and older were recruited from 2 s

``How am I going to work?'' Barriers to employment for immigrant Latinos and Latinas living with HIV in Toronto.

BACKGROUND: For individuals with HIV positive status, multiple barriers exist to accessing and re-entering employment. Studies on employment for people living with HIV lack a detailed consideration of race and ethnicity. This is the first article that focuses on barriers to employment for the HIV positive Latino community in the Canadian context. OBJECTIVE: To document the barriers that a sample of HIV positive Latinos and Latinas encounter in finding and maintaining employment in Toronto. METHODS: A non-probability sample of immigrant and refugee Latino men and women living with HIV/AIDS in

Depressive symptoms among older adults in Turkey: Evidence from a nationally representative ageing survey.

BACKGROUND: Late-life depression is a growing public health issue in ageing societies, influenced by health, functional, socioeconomic, and psychosocial factors. Evidence integrating health, functional, psychosocial, and healthcare-access determinants using nationally representative data in Turkey remains limited. This study examined determinants of depressive symptoms among adults aged ≥65 years. METHODS: This study analyzed data from 10,348 participants aged ≥65 years from the nationally representative Turkey Older Persons Profile Survey (TYPA 2023). All analyses incorporated survey samplin

Social Participation Among Older Immigrants: A Cross-Sectional Study in Nine Cities in Canada.

Background/Objectives: Social participation is important for healthy aging but challenging for older immigrants because of factors such as the loss of cultural community, language and transportation barriers, ageism, and racism. This study aimed to examine (1) the type of social activities in which older immigrants from Arabic (Arab), Mandarin (East Asian), and Punjabi-speaking (South Asian) communities in Canada engage; (2) their desire for more participation in social activities; and (3) factors they perceive as preventing their engagement in more social activities. Methods: Using a cross-se

Age-period-cohort analysis of trends in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis incidence.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with an unknown cause. Studies have reported that the incidence rate of ALS might be changing. As ALS is an age related disease, crude incidence could increase as population structure changes and overall life expectancy improves. Age-period-cohort (APC) models are frequently used to investigate trends in demographic rates such as incidence. Age-specific incidence rate for ALS from 1996 to 2014 were taken from a population-based ALS register in Ireland. To circumvent the well-known identifiability issue in APC models

Subjective aging and psychological well-being in older adults: a narrative review and multilevel framework integrating perceptual, behavioral, and sociocultural pathways.

As the global population ages, understanding the psychological determinants of well-being in later life has become an important public health priority. A growing body of evidence suggests that how older adults experience, interpret, and evaluate their own aging-the domain of subjective aging-shapes psychological well-being. However, this literature remains fragmented across social gerontology, health psychology, and cultural psychology, with limited integration of perceptual, behavioral, and sociocultural mechanisms. This narrative review synthesizes recent and foundational literature on subje

Mapping Uncharted Territory in Later Life Disablement Trajectories: A Closer Look at Progressive Disease.

Aging research has conceptualized disablement via 2 primary frameworks. Paradigms of successful aging frame substantial disablement in aging as universally abnormal. These models have often been challenged as narrow and ableist, leaving out common experiences among people with chronic conditions. By contrast, steady decline paradigms frame substantial disablement in aging as universally normal. These models have invited challenges due to ageism inherent in automatically conflating older age and disability. Both frameworks juxtapose monolithic and rigid ideas of normalcy-and thus limit our unde

Machine Learning, Sentiment Analysis, and Tweets: An Examination of Alzheimer's Disease Stigma on Twitter.

OBJECTIVES: Social scientists need practical methods for harnessing large, publicly available datasets that inform the social context of aging. We describe our development of a semi-automated text coding method and use a content analysis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia portrayal on Twitter to demonstrate its use. The approach improves feasibility of examining large publicly available datasets. METHOD: Machine learning techniques modeled stigmatization expressed in 31,150 AD-related tweets collected via Twitter's search API based on 9 AD-related keywords. Two researchers manually code

Participatory Approaches with Older Adults in Technology and Innovation Research: A Scoping Review of Reviews.

Compared to other age groups, older adults are often marginalized in the design processes of digital technologies leading to digital and social exclusion. While these aspects have been discussed in several reviews, an overarching perspective on how older adults are involved in Participatory Approaches (PA) in technology and innovation development is currently missing. This scoping review of reviews provides an overarching view on the narratives, trends, and gaps in PA in different fields of innovation, and proposes future research and practice directions. The study followed the Arksey & O'Mall

Health needs of older people and age-inclusive health care in humanitarian emergencies in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

Health needs of older people in humanitarian settings are poorly documented, negatively affecting the appropriateness of health services they receive. This Review identified the major health needs of older people across humanitarian contexts, including non-communicable diseases and mental health conditions (eg, psychological distress and depression). Barriers to health care of older people included inaccessibility of health-care services; shortage of appropriate health care; insufficient availability of medications and medical equipment; poor geriatric expertise of health-care staff, health po

Pregnancy experiences of transgender and gender-expansive individuals: A systematic scoping review from a critical midwifery perspective.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that transgender and gender-expansive people are more likely to have suboptimal pregnancy outcomes compared with cisgender people. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the role of midwifery in these inequities by analyzing the pregnancy experiences of transgender and gender-expansive people from a critical midwifery perspective. METHODS: We conducted a systematic scoping review. We included 15 papers published since 2010 that reported on pregnancy experiences of people who had experienced gestational pregnancy at least once, and were transg

Determinants of a sense of insecurity among home-dwelling older people.

Aims: A sense of insecurity may have an impact on older people's well-being and their courage to engage actively in meaningful activities. Studies on a sense of insecurity among older people are scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which home-dwelling older adults perceive their life as being insecure and how a sense of insecurity is associated with their health, functional status, active social engagement, well-being and perceptions of the societal treatment of older people. Methods: This study is part of the Helsinki Aging Study, a cohort study ongoing since 1989. Dat

[Family work in geriatric psychiatry].

Dementia and other late-life conditions in neuropsychiatry impose a heavy burden on society as a whole and in families in particular. A number of clinical presentations involving family aspects may be seen in clinical practice in a range of diagnoses (Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, depression or any other psychiatric disorder in the elderly). As a consequence, there is a growing trend towards working with families in geriatric psychiatry. Marital issues are not a frequent target for specific clinical intervention, but couple therapy may be useful regardless of age. The effectiveness of

Systemic Failure Modes of Large Language Models in Geriatric Psychiatric Assessment: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) show strong performance on medical examinations, yet their reliability in real-world psychogeriatric assessment is uncertain, where delirium, dementia, and late-life depression often coexist amid frailty, polypharmacy, and long clinical histories. We aimed to map empirically evaluated LLM failure modes most relevant to geriatric psychiatric assessment and risk management. METHODS: We conducted a systematic scoping review of empirical evaluations published between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2025. We searched biomedical and technical sources and i

Informed Consent in Patients With Frailty Syndrome.

Frailty is present in more than 30% of individuals older than 65 years of age presenting for anesthesia and surgery, and poses a number of unique issues in the informed consent process. Much attention has been directed at the increased incidence of poor outcomes in these individuals, including postoperative mortality, complications, and prolonged length of stay. These material risks are not generally factored into conventional risk predictors, so it is likely that individuals with frailty are never fully informed of the true risk for procedures undertaken in the hospital setting. While the ter
