Prevalence of neurological manifestations in COVID-19 and their association with mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Articles published in the literature report neurological manifestations or "complications" of SARS-CoV-2 infection and conclude that the different neurological manifestations are relatively similar, but with different frequencies. This study aimed to determine the frequency of neurological manifestations of COVID-19 and to identify which are associated with mortality. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of all patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection by RT-PCR at Hospital 1° de Octubre, in Mexico, from the beginning of the pandemic to 22 December 2020. A total of 561

[A case of gustatory disturbance caused by ipsilateral pontine hemorrhage].

We reported a 71-year-old woman with sudden-onset hypogeusia. The patient showed no other neurological signs or symptoms except for the taste disturbance. She lost bitter, salty, sour or sweet sensation on the right half of the tongue. A brain CT scan revealed a small hemorrhage in the right tegmentum of the middle pons. The hematoma was adjacent to the forth ventricle, affecting the gustatory tract running from the nucleus solitalius to the pontine taste area (PTA) in the upper pons. The gustatory pathway is generally said to exist around the medial lemniscus and the reticular formation. In t

A study about the frequency of taste disorders.

Although 5% of the general population exhibit a functional anosmia, little is known about the frequency of gustatory disorders. Whenever taste function has been tested within large sociodemographic studies, so far only short test versions were applied making the interpretation difficult. Using two psychophysical taste tests, the validated "taste strips" and suprathreshold taste solutions of the four basic tastes sweet, sour, salty and bitter we investigated 761 healthy subjects within the age range of 5-89 years. Prior to testing, all subjects rated their taste function. According to testing w

Assessment of health-related quality of life after mild COVID-19 infection.

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) affected the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and its impact on well-being is not sufficiently understood yet. The worsening of HRQoL and symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, depression, chronic Headache, Myalgia, ageusia, olfactory disorders, and cognitive impairment can be seen in people of different ages and genders after COVID-19 infection, even mild infections without hospitalization. These issues generate a disease burden that can reduce work skills and cause social, psychological, and neuropsychiatric challenges. OBJECTIVE: To evalua

Post-COVID syndrome in non-hospitalised patients with COVID-19: a longitudinal prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: While the leading symptoms during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are acute and the majority of patients fully recover, a significant fraction of patients now increasingly experience long-term health consequences. However, most data available focus on health-related events after severe infection and hospitalisation. We present a longitudinal, prospective analysis of health consequences in patients who initially presented with no or minor symptoms of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Hence, we focus on mild COVID-19 in non-hospitalised

Diagnostic value of symptoms for pediatric SARS-CoV-2 infection in a primary care setting.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic value of symptoms used by daycares and schools to screen children and adolescents for SARS-CoV-2 infection, we analyzed data from a primary care setting. METHODS: This cohort study included all patients ≤17 years old who were evaluated at Providence Community Health Centers (PCHC; Providence, U.S.), for COVID-19 symptoms and/or exposure, and received SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing between March-June 2020. Participants were identified from PCHC electronic medical records. For three age groups- 0-4, 5-11, and 12-17 years-we estimated the s

Clinical neurophysiology and cerebrospinal liquor analysis to detect Guillain-Barré syndrome and polyneuritis cranialis in COVID-19 patients: A case series.

We report a case series of five patients affected by SARS-CoV-2 who developed neurological symptoms, mainly expressing as polyradiculoneuritis and cranial polyneuritis in the 2 months of COVID-19 pandemic in a city in the northeast of Italy. A diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome was made on the basis of clinical presentation, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, and electroneurography. In four of them, the therapeutic approach included the administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (0.4 g/kg for 5 days), which resulted in the improvement of neurological symptoms. Clinical neurophysiology revealed

Clinical characteristics and online mental health care of asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic patients with coronavirus disease 2019.

Comparing to data in patients with severe coronavirus diseases 2019 (COVID-19), there are few studies on the prevalence anxiety and/or depression in patients with asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic COVID-19. We investigated the clinical characteristics and the prevalence of anxiety and/or depression among asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic patients with COVID-19 and monitored their mental health using an online assessment. An online survey for monitoring and assessing the mental health of patients with COVID-19 using a mobile phone was conducted. We used the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Sca

Post-traumatic taste disorders: a case series.

Since 1800s there are reports of post-traumatic anosmia, but few studies investigated post-traumatic gustatory deficit and adopted validated evaluation tests. Peripheral and/or central mechanisms may be involved in the genesis of post-traumatic gustatory dysfunction. Beyond a reduction/loss (hypogeusia/ageusia) of gustatory function following a trauma, qualitative taste changes (dysgeusia) may occur. Especially when persistent, taste deficits might be particularly relevant for patient's quality of life and activities of daily life, but knowledge on this topic is limited. Fifty-three consecutiv

CT scan does not make a diagnosis of Covid-19: A cautionary case report.

Here, we report the clinical case of a 12-year-old girl presenting with flu-like symptoms, cough, anosmia, ageusia, breathing difficulties, and patchy ground glass opacities on TDM chest scan who turned out to be Coronavirus 229E-infected. This case draws attention to the risk of false COVID-19 diagnosis when over-relying on CT scan imaging.

Analysis of drug-induced adverse reactions affecting appetite and taste using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report Database.

OBJECTIVE: Pharmacotherapy is a potential risk factor for undernutrition; however, the association between individual drugs and nutrition-related adverse reactions remains unknown. We aimed to explore drugs affecting appetite and taste using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. METHODS: JADER reports (April 2004-January 2025) were analyzed for drug safety signals across seven Preferred Terms (PTs): "Appetite disorder," "Decreased appetite," "Abnormal loss of weight," "Ageusia," "Dysgeusia," "Hypogeusia," and "Taste disorder." Signal detected drugs were classified by therap

Optimal symptom combinations to aid COVID-19 case identification: analysis from a community-based, prospective, observational cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnostic work-up following any COVID-19 associated symptom will lead to extensive testing, potentially overwhelming laboratory capacity whilst primarily yielding negative results. We aimed to identify optimal symptom combinations to capture most cases using fewer tests with implications for COVID-19 vaccine developers across different resource settings and public health. METHODS: UK and US users of the COVID-19 Symptom Study app who reported new-onset symptoms and an RT-PCR test within seven days of symptom onset were included. Sensitivity, specificity, and number of RT-PCR test

Loss of smell and taste: a new marker of COVID-19? Tracking reduced sense of smell during the coronavirus pandemic using search trends.

OBJECTIVES: It has been demonstrated that reduction in smell and/or taste is the most predictive symptom in SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19 infection. We used Google Trends to analyze regional searches relating to loss of smell and taste across Italy, Spain, France, Brazil, and the United States of America and determined the association with reported Covid-19 cases. METHODS: In order to retrieve the data, we built a Python software program that provides access to Google Trends data via an application program interface. Daily COVID-19 case data for subregions of the five countries selected were retrieved
