Home and Community Environmental Features, Activity Performance, and Community Participation among Older Adults with Functional Limitations.

This paper describes relationships among home and community environmental features, activity performance in the home, and community participation potential to support aging in place. A subset of data on older adults with functional limitations (N = 122), sixty three (63) with mobility and 59 with other limitations, were utilized in this study from a larger project's subject pool. Results showed significant and positive correlations between environmental barriers, activity dependence and difficulty at home, and less community participation in the mobility limitation group. While kitchen and bat

Molecular insights into the contribution of oak barrel aging to the aroma of beer with high alcohol content using SAFE-GC-O/AEDA and OAV calculation.

Wooden barrel aging has currently been used to increase the flavour complexity of beers. To investigate the aroma evolution of beer with high alcohol content after bourbon barrel aging, the aroma of beer before and after aging (BBA and BAA) was comparatively studied at both sensory and molecular levels. QDA revealed that BBA was characterised by a pronounced "fruity", "caramel-like", "wine-like" and "alcoholic" aroma, whereas BAA was rich in "coconut", "woody", and "vanillin" notes. Thirty-three odourants with OAV > 1 were identified and verified. Both additive and subtractive aging took place

The Association Between Residential Movement and Successful Aging: Evidence from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging.

The residential environment is a key determinant of well-being in later life, especially amid rapid urbanization and population aging in Korea. This study investigates the relationship between residential movement and successful aging among older adults in South Korea. Based on data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2012-2022), an analysis was conducted on 5,307 individuals aged 51 to 101 years, examining residential changes across administrative divisions, urban-rural contexts, and housing types. Successful aging was defined through four dimensions: absence of major disease, no dis

Aging and Wound Healing of the Skin: A Review of Clinical and Pathophysiological Hallmarks.

Aging is a universal process that can cause diminished function of organs and various diseases. The most striking consequences of aging can be seen visibly on the skin, which acts as a barrier against various external insults. Aging of the skin consists of intrinsic and extrinsic processes that work in concert and influence each other. Intrinsic aging involves biochemical degenerative processes that gradually takes place with age. Extrinsic aging are biochemical processes driven by external influences that lead to aging. There are significant morphological changes at all levels in aged skin th

Aging in the downtown corridor: Mapping the neighborhood experiences of Seattle's unhoused adults over age 50.

Research has established the importance of understanding the dynamic relationship between older adults and the environments in which they are embedded. However, the meaning of place for unhoused older adults amidst an increasingly contested urban landscape is largely unknown. This exploratory study aims to further include unhoused older adults' experiences in the scholarship on aging and place by asking how unhoused adults over age 50 (1) describe their spatial patterns and experiences and (2) negotiate their relationship with common urban places. Through iterative mapping conducted in focus g

Latent profile characteristics of nature connectedness and place attachment among urban older adults practicing Tai Chi: psychological heterogeneity of green space exposure.

BACKGROUND: With the rapid acceleration of population aging, promoting active aging and psychological health among older adults has become an important public health priority. Urban green spaces play a key role in supporting physical activity and psychological adjustment in older adults. However, most existing studies have adopted a variable-centered approach, which limits the understanding of intra-individual psychological heterogeneity. This study focused on urban park older adults practicing Tai Chi and examined latent profile characteristics of nature connectedness and place attachment fro

Structural and Molecular Imaging of Aging Brain: A Focus on MR Imaging and PET Modalities.

The process of aging in the brain is reflective of various factors including the environment, lifestyle, genetics, and management of concurrent chronic conditions. Aging in the brain leads to observable structural changes on neuroimaging, such as brain volume reduction, neuronal atrophy, and synaptic loss, which affect higher cognitive functions. Positron emission tomography imaging can help visualize these changes earlier before structural changes even take place and the associated decline in brain function, revealing important insights into how the brain ages and the impact on neural connect

Quasi-Seniors' Perception, Response, and Planning from the Perspective of Successful Aging.

With the coming of a rapidly aging society, individuals born in the baby boom era after World War II are now facing the challenges of aging. From late middle age to successful aging, what are the perceptions and responses of these quasi-seniors? With this in mind, referring to Phelan's successful aging scale, the researchers developed the 4P Strategies (Physical, Psychological, Prospect, and Place and Relationships) tailored for quasi-seniors. Based on grounded theory, the results of 12 sessions of focused interviews (involving a total of 93 interviewees between the ages of 55 and 75; 41 males

Planning Dementia-Capable Group Homes for Adults With Intellectual Disability: Insights From a 15-Year Longitudinal Study.

Adults with intellectual disability (ID) experience elevated risk of developing dementia, including earlier onset in some conditions such as Down syndrome. As increasing numbers of adults with ID reach older age, community service systems are confronted with the need to adapt residential supports originally designed for lifelong developmental assistance to accommodate progressive neurodegenerative conditions. One emerging response has been the development of small, community-based dementia-capable group homes that integrate specialized care practices within familiar neighborhood environments.

Articular Cartilage Aging-Potential Regenerative Capacities of Cell Manipulation and Stem Cell Therapy.

Changes in articular cartilage during the aging process are a stage of natural changes in the human body. Old age is the major risk factor for osteoarthritis but the disease does not have to be an inevitable consequence of aging. Chondrocytes are particularly prone to developing age-related changes. Changes in articular cartilage that take place in the course of aging include the acquisition of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype by chondrocytes, a decrease in the sensitivity of chondrocytes to growth factors, a destructive effect of chronic production of reactive oxygen species and

Antisenescence therapies for age-related bone loss: Target factors, medicines, biomedical materials.

Progress in living conditions and medical technology have extended the human life span such that population aging, and thus the development of multi-system degenerative diseases, has become a major problem in many countries. Bone is a metabolically dynamic tissue and bone aging is closely related to a shift in the balance between bone resorption and bone formation. The resulting loss of bone mass and bone mechanical properties in older adults place them at risk of injury and premature death. Cellular senescence occurs in response to endogenous and exogenous stresses that lead to permanent cell

Aging leads to altered microglial function that reduces brain resiliency increasing vulnerability to neurodegenerative diseases.

Aging is the primary risk factor for many neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, understanding the basic biological changes that take place with aging that lead to the brain being less resilient to disease progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease or insults to the brain such as stroke or traumatic brain injuries. Clearly this will not cure the disease per se, yet increasing the ability of the brain to respond to injury could improve long term outcomes. The focus of this review is examining changes in microglia with age and possible therapeutic int

News from the old: Aging features in the intracardiac, musculoskeletal, and enteric nervous systems.

Aging strongly affects the peripheral nervous system (PNS), triggering alterations that vary depending on the innervated tissue. The most frequent alteration in peripheral nerve aging is reduced nerve fiber and glial density which can lead to abnormal nerve functionality. Interestingly, the activation of a destructive phenotype takes place in macrophages across the PNS while a reduced number of neuronal bodies is a unique feature of some enteric ganglia. Single cell/nucleus RNA-sequencing has unveiled a striking complexity of cell populations in the peripheral nerves, and these refined cell ty

Airborne particle exposure and extrinsic skin aging.

For decades, extrinsic skin aging has been known to result from chronic exposure to solar radiation and, more recently, to tobacco smoke. In this study, we have assessed the influence of air pollution on skin aging in 400 Caucasian women aged 70-80 years. Skin aging was clinically assessed by means of SCINEXA (score of intrinsic and extrinsic skin aging), a validated skin aging score. Traffic-related exposure at the place of residence was determined by traffic particle emissions and by estimation of soot in fine dust. Exposure to background particle concentration was determined by measurements
