Radon measurements and dose estimate of workers in a manganese ore mine.

In the new European Basic Safety Standard (EU-BSS), a new reference level for indoor radon concentration in workplaces has recommended that the annual average activity concentration of indoor radon shall not be higher than 300Bqm-3. This paper describes the radon concentration level in an underground workplace (manganese ore mine) over long time intervals (4 years). Several common radon monitors devices - including NRPB and Raduet (as a passive method based on CR-39), AlphaGUARD PQ 2000Pro, SARAD EQF3220, TESLA and Pylon WLX (as active methods) - were used for continuous radon measurements. The discovery of an unusual cause of indoor radiation pollution.

The objective of our study is to investigate the reasons why 21 persons suffered erythema and other skin changes, and conjunctivae infection after staying in a closed room for three hours. A multi-disciplinary case study including interviews, building and ventilation inspections, was performed by a multidisciplinary team comprising a medical epidemiologist, and an industrial hygienist. A self-administered questionnaire was designed to determine the magnitude of the health problem of the affected students. By a process of investigative elimination, we deduced that the symptoms were caused by ac

Comparative study of 131I released during a nuclear accident.

Radioiodine-131 (131I) is the most significant environmental contaminant during a short-term nuclear accident. When present in the atmosphere, it concentrates mainly in the thyroid gland through inhalation or ingestion. This can lead to partial or total destruction of thyroid cells, potentially causing hypothyroidism. It therefore negatively affects the thyroid in exposed populations. At high doses, radiation can also cause cellular mutations and increase the risk of thyroid cancer, particularly in children under five years old and those exposed during pregnancy. In such cases, nonradioactive

An improved method of nasal swab analysis for assessing alpha internal radioactive contaminants.

When responding to nuclear and radiological emergencies, rapid and on-site detections of possible internal radioactive contaminants are required for early dose estimation and medical triage. Nasal swab analysis is an effective method to provide valuable information for early and fast estimates of alpha radionuclide inhalation intakes and resultant doses. In this study, to improve the quality of nasal swab measurements, a specialised double-detector alpha counter was designed. Various parameters including swab materials, sample pre-preparation, angle-dependence and vacuum dependence were invest

Regional radiation risk and vulnerability assessment by integration of mathematical modelling and GIS analysis.

The Kola Peninsula, Russian Arctic exceeds all other regions in the world in the number of nuclear reactors. The study was aimed at estimating possible radiation risks to the population in the Nordic countries in case of a severe accident in the Kola Peninsula. Two approaches were tested: (1) probabilistic analysis of modelled possible pathways of radionuclide transport and precipitation and (2) deterministic approach (case studies) for most possible or worst-case scenarios of modelled transport and deposition of radionuclides. For the general population, Finland is at most risk with respect t

Airborne particle radioactivity during desert dust days in Cyprus.

Mediterranean countries are often affected by desert dust storms, which have significant effects on the environment and public health. We compared airborne particle radioactivity levels during desert dust and non-dust days in Cyprus. Gross α- and β-radioactivity from Total Suspended Particle (TSP) samples, collected at two urban routine monitoring stations in Limassol and Nicosia, were available for the period 2017-2020 and 2008-2020, respectively. Radionuclides 137Cs and 40K, from TSP samples, were also available from a semi-industrial monitoring station in Nicosia during 2008-2020. Informati

Exposure to radon and ambient particle radioactivity during pregnancy and adverse maternal, fetal and perinatal outcomes: The current literature and potential mechanisms.

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that is naturally occurring in the environment, originating from the decay of uranium that exists in the earth's crust. In addition to lung cancer, radon exposure has recently been associated with hypertension and cardiovascular disease. However, little consideration has been given to radon exposure during pregnancy, even though pregnant people are a more vulnerable population and ionizing radiation is a known risk factor for adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. There is also greater recognition of the potential effect of ambient particle radioact

Evaluation of the Nose-to-Brain Transport of Different Physicochemical Forms of Uranium after Exposure via Inhalation of a UO4 Aerosol in the Rat.

BACKGROUND: Health-risk issues are raised concerning inhalation of particulate pollutants that are thought to have potential hazardous effects on the central nervous system. The brain is presented as a direct target of particulate matter (PM) exposure because of the nose-to-brain pathway involvement. The main cause of contamination in nuclear occupational activities is related to exposure to aerosols containing radionuclides, particularly uranium dust. It has been previously demonstrated that instilled solubilized uranium in the rat nasal cavity is conveyed to the brain via the olfactory nerve

Estimation of airborne contamination during therapeutic radioiodine-131(I-131) administration: A comparative study between capsule and solution forms.

BACKGROUND: Radioiodine-131(I-131) is widely used in the treatment of thyroid diseases. Despite its therapeutic advantages, working with unsealed sources such as I-131poses risk of airborne contamination and occupational radiation exposure, especially from airborne contamination during the preparation and administration procedures. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the airborne contamination levels during the administration of I-131in capsule and solution forms by estimating the Derived Air Concentration (DAC) during therapeutic procedures and evaluating occupational exposure risk. Radon levels in caves in Primorsko-goranska County, Croatia and assessment of the effective dose for visitors and tourist guides.

Radon is a natural source of radiation and one of the main causes of lung cancer. Since radon is a product of radium decay, it leaks from soil and rock and often accumulates in enclosed spaces. Caves are known for high radon concentrations, especially under certain meteorological conditions when the air circulation in the cave is weak. In this study, the results of radon monitoring in two caves in Croatia, Šparožna Cave and Biserujka Cave, are presented. Radon concentrations were measured continuously in each cave for 14 months. The monthly average concentrations showed a clear seasonal patter

"Fusion of Horizons": Part III. Rethinking radon Risk: Scientific advances and regulatory implications (since 1990s).

This study examines the global evolution of scientific understanding regarding radon exposure and its health implications, focusing on the transition from early occupational exposure limits and epidemiological risk assessments to molecular-level attributions of radon-induced diseases. Since the early 1990s, advancements in genetic and molecular research have provided growing evidence suggesting that radon exposure may leave a distinct oncological signature, potentially allowing for more precise differentiation between radon-induced lung cancers and those caused by other factors. While this fie

Assessment of radon and carrier gases in an underground gold mining company in Ghana.

Previous studies in Ghanaian mines have largely focused on radon concentration and associated health risk, with limited investigation into the role of carrier gases that influence radon transport from bedrock. This study evaluates radon (222Rn) levels, carrier gases (CO2, H2S, CH4), and their associated health risks in an underground section of the AngloGold Ashanti mine. Measurements were conducted in two phases using CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detectors and a Ventis Pro5 multi-gas detector. The average radon concentration across both phases was 214 ± 16 Bq·m-3, with phase-specific means

On the usability of event zero time determinations using radioxenon isotopic activity ratios given the real atmospheric background observations.

This work focuses on the usability of event zero time determination using xenon isotopic activity ratios. Two data sets from Nevada underground nuclear test and Fukushima accident debris were used to calculate the age of radioxenon release by considering three kinds of radioactivity release radionuclide sources: nuclear explosion scenarios, nuclear power reactor release and medical isotopes production facilities release. Typical nuclear power reactor releases were characterized and reference values are proposed for six isotopic activity ratios, which data can be considered as reference point o

Volatile organic compounds in the unsaturated zone from radioactive wastes.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often comingled with low-level radioactive wastes (LLRW), but little is known about subsurface VOC emanations from LLRW landfills. The current study systematically quantified VOCs associated with LLRW over an 11-yr period at the USGS Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) in southwestern Nevada. Unsaturated-zone gas samples of VOCs were collected by adsorption on resin cartridges and analyzed by thermal desorption and GC/MS. Sixty of 87 VOC method analytes were detected in the 110-m-thick unsaturated zone surrounding a LLRW disposal facility. Chlorofluorocar

ESTIMATION OF AIRBORNE 106RU ACTIVITY CONCENTRATION FROM TOTAL BETA ACTIVITY OF PM10 PARTICLE FRACTIONS.

Airborne radioruthenium, as a result of an accidental release, presents a risk for occupational and public exposure. In fall 2017, a detection of 106Ru was reported by the European atmospheric radioactive contamination monitoring networks. We investigated the daily specific total beta activity of PM10 particle fractions samples. The presented method enables indirect determination of airborne 106Ru activity concentration from total beta activity, in case 106Ru was confirmed as single excess radiological pollutant. This allows for daily measurements and time-resolved 106Ru activity concentration

ASSESSMENT OF INDOOR GAMMA RADIATION AND DETERMINATION OF EXCESS LIFETIME CANCER RISK IN TEHRAN IN WINTER AND SPRING 2017.

Natural radiation is a feature of the environment in which we live. One of the contributions of human exposure to ionizing radiation due to natural sources arises from gamma radiation. Therefore, present study was aimed to evaluate and map indoor gamma dose rate in Tehran. The corresponding annual effective dose (AED) and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) were also calculated. All measurements were performed by a Geiger Muller detector in 43 dwellings in Tehran. The average indoor gamma dose rate in Tehran was appointed as 343.2 nGy/h. AED and ELCR were calculated as 2.4 mSv and 10.3 × 10-3,

Quantification of FISH-painted chromosome aberrations after domestic radon exposure.

Chromosome painting (target chromosomes 1, 4, 12) was performed in peripheral lymphocytes from 25 occupants of nine houses with indoor radon concentrations of 210-3000 Bqm-3. Compared to a control group, the mean frequency of symmetrical translocations of the radon group was slightly but not significantly (p < 0.10) increased. A similar tendency became apparent for a comparison of two groups of subjects with cumulative radon exposures above and below 2800 Bqm-3 y. It is concluded that FISH-based measurements of stable symmetrical translocations should reflect the cumulative radon exposure to h
