Burnout among healthcare professionals in high-emotion work environments: A qualitative study from the burn unit in Albania.

This study explores the experiences of burnout among physicians and nurses working in the Burn Unit at the University Hospital Center "Mother Teresa" in Tirana. Using a qualitative case study methodology, ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals who have over five years of experience in this service. Thematic analysis, following a template analysis approach, identified four main themes: ongoing emotional and physical workload, lack of institutional support, emotional connection with patients, and individual coping strategies. The findings show that burnout in this conte

Psychosocial Perceptions and Health Behaviors Related to Lifestyle During Pregnancy: A Cross-Sectional Study in a Local Community of Albania.

Background: Maternal health behaviors during pregnancy are crucial for maternal and fetal outcomes. While global research has explored that demographic, clinical, and psychosocial determinants significantly influence these behaviors, evidence from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Albania, remains limited. This study aims to evaluate psychosocial perceptions and health behaviors related to lifestyle among pregnant women in a local Albanian community in order to identify which are higher risk subgroups that need targeted and tailored antenatal care interventions. Methods: This

Antigenic and molecular characterization of wild type 1 poliovirus causing outbreaks of poliomyelitis in Albania and neighboring countries in 1996.

Mass vaccination has led poliomyelitis to become a rare disease in a large part of the world, including Western Europe. However, in the past 20 years wild polioviruses imported from countries where polio is endemic have been responsible for outbreaks in otherwise polio-free European countries. We report on the characterization of poliovirus isolates from a large outbreak of poliomyelitis that occurred in Albania in 1996 and that also spread to the neighboring countries of Yugoslavia and Greece. The epidemics involved 145 subjects, mostly young adults, and caused persisting paralysis in 87 indi

Factors associated with poor glycaemic control among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Albania: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Poor glycaemic control is common among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in low- and middle-income settings in South-Eastern Europe, yet patient-level data on its correlates from Albania are scarce. We examined the demographic, clinical and treatment-related factors associated with poor glycaemic control (HbA1c ≥ 7%) in Albanian adults with T2DM. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 176 consecutive adults with T2DM attending a hospital-based outpatient diabetes service in northern Albania. Poor glycaemic control was defined a priori as HbA1c ≥ 7% (53 mmol/mol). Sociodemogra

COVID-19 breakthrough infections during the circulation of Delta and Omicron variants in Tirana, Albania, April 2021-March 2022.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 breakthrough cases raised crucial questions about vaccine effectiveness, implications for public health, and the dynamics of viral transmission. We described vaccine breakthrough infections in Tirana during the Delta (01/07/2021-12/15/2021) and Omicron (16/12/2021-31/03/2022) periods, to better inform mitigation and vaccination strategies. METHODS: We extracted data from 01/04/2021-31/03/2022 (study period) from two systems: the Albanian infectious disease surveillance system, and the national vaccination database. We defined a COVID-19 case as a resident of Tirana who te

Missed opportunities in health sector responses to violence against women and girls: a comparative mixed-methods study in Albania and Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a global public health crisis, affecting one in three women worldwide. Survivors of VAWG access health services more frequently due to the direct and indirect consequences of violence. Despite the health system's potential lifesaving role, these visits often result in missed opportunities. METHODS: The Missed Opportunities to Respond to Violence Against Women and Girls in the Health Sector (MISSOP) study investigated the nature, scale and determinants of missed opportunities in responding to VAWG within primary care and emergency departme

The current status of phlebotomine sand flies in Albania and incrimination of Phlebotomus neglectus (Diptera, Psychodidae) as the main vector of Leishmania infantum.

The incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Albania is higher than in other countries of southern Europe, however the role of local sand fly species in the transmission of Leishmania infantum was not addressed conclusively. In 2006, a country-wide collection of sand flies performed in 14 sites selected based on recent occurrence of VL cases showed that Phlebotomus neglectus was by far the most prevalent species (95.6%). Furthermore, 15% of pools made from 422 P. neglectus females tested positive for Leishmania sp. genomic DNA. In the same year, Culicoides trapping was performed for blueton

Parasites and vector-borne pathogens in client-owned dogs in Albania. Blood pathogens and seroprevalences of parasitic and other infectious agents.

Knowledge on the epidemiology of parasitic and vector-borne infections is still very limited for Albania, a country located in the Balkan Peninsula in southeast Europe. Recent publications indicated prevalence rates of up to 52% for vector-borne infections in less-cared dogs in Albania. To provide data on the epidemiological situation in dogs under veterinary care, a total of 602 client-owned dogs presented to four small animal clinics between March 2010 and April 2011 in Tirana, Albania, were screened by examination of Giemsa-stained blood smears, PCR, and serological methods for the presence

Outbreak of paralytic poliomyelitis in Albania, 1996: high attack rate among adults and apparent interruption of transmission following nationwide mass vaccination.

After >10 years without detection of any cases of wild virus-associated poliomyelitis, a large outbreak of poliomyelitis occurred in Albania in 1996. A total of 138 paralytic cases occurred, of which 16 (12%) were fatal. The outbreak was due to wild poliovirus type 1, isolated from 69 cases. An attack rate of 10 per 100,000 population was observed among adults aged 19-25 years who were born during a time of declining wild poliovirus circulation and had been vaccinated with two doses of monovalent oral poliovirus vaccines (OPVs) that may have been exposed to ambient temperatures for prolonged p

Synergistic Interventions for Silencing Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Dyslexia in a Child With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Case Report From Albania.

To the best of the authors' knowledge, this article is the first of its kind in Albania and neighboring countries to investigate the transformative synergistic intervention approach through cognitive behavioral therapy, parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), and heavy metal detoxification on a child with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and dyslexia. The limited mental health awareness in Albania, particularly regarding PCIT and similar treatments, highlights the importance of the applicability and adaptability of such intervent
