Protective effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from various sources on gastric ulcer has been examined in mice using parenteral as well as oral route. Ulcer is induced by indomethacin, stress or alcohol. LPS was prepared from 6 species of bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pantoea agglomerans, Serratia ficaria, Enterobacter cloacae, Bordetella pertussis, Alcaligenes faecalis) and from wheat flour. When administered intravenously, LPS of Pantoea agglomerans was the most effective among other LPS examined. Lipopolysaccharide of wheat flour (LPSw) showed a significantly protective effect by the oral rout

This study explores the novel synthesis of high-quality refractory ceramic bodies using varying proportions of petroleum waste sludge (PWS) and local bauxite mineral, with a focus on their antimicrobial properties. Five ceramic formulations, labeled RCB1 through RCB5, were prepared and fired at temperatures ranging from 600 to 1300 °C. These ceramics were rigorously evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activity against a range of pathogens, including Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Salmonella paratyphi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853, and Alcaligenes aquatilis) and Gra

The amino acid sequences of haemoglobin-like proteins from the bacteria Alcaligenes eutrophus, Bacillus subtilis, Erwinia chrysanthemi, Escherichia coli, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vitreoscilla sp. and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were studied. Phylogenies based on distance and parsimony analysis showed that the eubacterial group can be easily distinguished from the other haemoglobin-like proteins. The construction of a consensus bacterial flavohaemoglobin based on the alignment of six bacterial and one yeast globins allowed the design of consensus primers to search for haemoglobin-like ge

The environmental dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) poses a significant threat to both ecosystem and human health, yet their efficient removal continues to present considerable challenges. Hydroxyl radicals (•OH), as highly reactive oxidants, are capable of effectively degrading extracellular ARGs (eARGs). However, conventional Fenton reaction systems typically demand substantial chemical inputs and high energy consumption. Here, we report a biologically driven pathway that couples microbial ammonia oxidation with •OH generation to enable sustainable eARGs degradation. Alcali

A total of 284 clinical isolates of various species of Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, P. maltophilia, and Acinetobacter anitratum were tested for susceptibility to carbenicillin by the standardized Bauer-Kirby disc diffusion technique and a microtiter broth dilution method. The data obtained led to the following proposed criteria for the interpretation of the results of disc susceptibility tests. Enterobacteriaceae that yield zones of inhibition equal to or greater than 20 mm in diameter around 50-mug discs of carbenicillin are designated as sensitive to the drug; isolates that yi

Scleral buckle removal is an uncommon procedure performed for various reasons. Microbiological information on explanted scleral buckles remains limited. The authors identified 37 cases of scleral buckle removal during an 18-year period. Bacterial cultures isolated an organism in 4 of 9 patients (44%) with clinical infection. Organisms identified included methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Mycobacterium abscessus, and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species. Bacterial cultures isolated an organism in 3 of 11 patients (27%) without clinical infection. Organism

Among the facultative bacteria capable of growth on mesquite wood which were isolated from the asceptically dissected hind-gut of the termite Reticulitermes hesperus were two strains of Bacillus cereus, one strain each of Arthrobacter, Alcaligenes and Serratia, and a very small Gram-negative fermentative rod. The B. cereus strains, the Serratia marcescens strain and the Arthrobacter sp. grew well on a mineral salts alpha-cellusose agar. One of the Bacillus cereus strains and Serratia marcescens hydrolysed gels of carboxymethylcellulose. All isolates grew well with mesquite wood as the carbon s

Cyclospora cayetanensis (C. cayetanensis), an opportunistic intracellular coccidian, is responsible for chronic debilitating diarrheal outbreaks possessing life-threatening penalties, especially in immunocompromised patients. The solemn therapeutic agents against cyclosporiasis are limited by their grave effects and high recurrence rate. The current study aimed to utilize greenly synthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and evaluate their therapeutic efficacy on cyclosporiasis in immunosuppressed murine models. They were biosynthesized proficiently using Alcaligenes faecalis and characterize

A laboratory sequential anaerobic-aerobic bioreactor system, which consisted of an anaerobic fixed film reactor and two aerobic chemostats, was set up to degrade tetrachloroethylene (PCE) without accumulating highly toxic degradation intermediates. A soil enrichment culture, which could reductively dechlorinate 900 microM (ca. 150 mg/L) of PCE stoichiometrically into cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (cis-DCE), was attached to ceramic media in the anaerobic fixed film reactor. A phenol degrading strain, Alcaligenes sp. R5, which can efficiently degrade cis-DCE by co-metabolic oxidation, was used as ino

We report a case of corneal ulcer caused by the opportunistic organism Achromobacter xylosoxidans which developed during chronic topical steroid treatment of an eye with neovascular glaucoma. A. xylosoxidans has probably been underreported as a cause of ocular infection because of confusion between this organism and other Gram-negative organisms, particularly pseudomonas. A. xylosoxidans is resistant to aminoglycosides and some cephalosporins but not carbenicillin. This difference in antibiotic sensitivity patterns between A. xylosoxidans and pseudomonas makes an accurate differentiation betwe

Twelve denitrifying bacteria representing six genera were tested for an ability to nitrify pyruvic oxime heterotrophically. Six of these bacteria exhibited appreciable nitrification activity, yielding as much as 5.8 mM nitrite and little or no nitrate when grown in a mineral salts medium containing 7 mM pyruvic oxime and 0.05% yeast extract. Of the six active bacteria, four (Pseudomonas denitrificans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and two strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens) could grow on yeast extract but not pyruvic oxime, one (Pseudomonas aureofaciens) could grow slowly on pyruvic oxime, and one (

Bacteria with intrinsic resistance to antibiotics are found in nature. Such organisms may acquire additional resistance genes from bacteria introduced into soil or water, and the resident bacteria may be the reservoir or source of widespread resistant organisms found in many environments. We isolated antibiotic-resistant bacteria in freshwater samples from 16 U.S. rivers at 22 sites and measured the prevalence of organisms resistant to beta-lactam and non-beta-lactam antibiotics. Over 40% of the bacteria resistant to more than one antibiotic had at least one plasmid. Ampicillin resistance gene

Clinical and bacteriological features of nine cases in which Achromobacter xylosoxidans were isolated in Hawaii are described. Five cases were ear infections mixed with other gram-negative bacteria. Colonial morphology, xylose oxidation, peritrichous flagella staining, and antibiotic susceptibility pattern assisted in separating this bacterium from other nonfermentative, oxidase-positive, gram-negative rods.

Fluoroquinolones are active against a wide variety of bacteria. The antibacterial spectra of fluoroquinolones encompass staphylococci, Bacillus species, and Corynebacterium species implicated in infections of the immunocompromised host; Enterobacteriaceae; most intestinal pathogens; and many gram-negative organisms commonly causing nosocomial infections. Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus ducreyi, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Branhamella catarrhalis are highly susceptible to this class of drugs. Because of their ability to penetrate into phagocytes, fluoroquinolones have
