AIM: To characterize the histochemical type and pattern of intestinal metaplasia (IM) adjacent to gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) and distal gastric cancer (GC) in Linzhou, Henan Province, China.
METHODS: Alcian-blue-periodic acid Schiff and high iron diamine-Alcian blue histochemical methods were performed on 142 cases of IM, including 49 cases of GCA and 93 cases of GC. All the patients were from Linzhou, Henan Province, China, the highest incidence area for both GCA and squamous cell carcinoma. BACKGROUND: Papular mucinosis is an idiopathic cutaneous mucinosis. It includes 3 clinicopathologic subsets according to the recent Rongioletti classification: a generalized papular form, a localized form, and atypical forms. One hundred and twenty-one rectal biopsies from 99 patients with carcinoma of the rectum or lower sigmoid colon were investigated using a high iron-diamine-Alcian blue technique for sulphated and non-sulphated acid mucins. Mucin deposit is a feature that is not commonly mentioned in textbooks when talking about rosacea. Nevertheless, it is one of the prominent findings of a severe variant of the phymatous type of rosacea known as the fibrous type. We retrospectively investigated 20 cases of early stages of rosacea and examined the mucin deposit in them, with histochemical stains (Alcian Blue and Periodic Acid-Schiff). Epidermotropic lymphocytes in mycosis fungoides typically reside in clear lacunae. The material forming this space is unknown. Thirty specimens from 30 patients with mycosis fungoides were stained with alcian blue, modified Mowry's colloidal iron and mucicarmine to determine if some form of mucin could be identified. Using these stains, no form of mucin was noted in the lacunae surrounding the epidermotropic lymphocytes of mycosis fungoides. The cause of the clear spaces around epidermotropic lymphocytes in mycosis fungoides remains unexplained, but is unlikely to represent mucin deposition.

Red blood cells have a negative charge on their surface which prevents Rouloau formation. This charge may reflect the charge on glomerular capillaries. A novel dye exclusion assay based on differential staining of fixed cells has been evaluated using the MOLT4 (T-lymphoblastic leukaemia) and DAUDI (Burkitt lymphoma) cell lines. Reproducible differential staining was found with fixed samples kept for up to 2 months. A small increase (less than 13%) in the proportion of stained cells was observed over the first 30 days in fixative. A case of Sister Mary Joseph's nodule (umbilical metastasis) is described from a primary adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon. Needle aspiration cytology made the diagnosis which was confirmed by immunocytochemical localization of CEA, B72.3, EMA, and cytokeratin in the tumour cells. Extensive mucus production in the tumour cells was demonstrated by alcian blue and mucicarmine stains.
