Socio-economic patterning of expenditures on 'out-of-home' food and non-alcoholic beverages by product and place of purchase in Britain.

While most food is consumed at home, food eaten out-of-home plays an important role in diets and it has been associated with higher energy intake and higher body weight. Beyond prepared meals, there is limited understanding of what foods people buy out-of-home and where they buy them from. This study analyses out-of-home food purchases by food groups and food outlet types, and estimates socio-economic differences in these expenditure patterns. We used a nationally representative product-level dataset of expenditures (n=2,734,987) on foods and non-alcoholic beverages for out-of-home consumption

Marchiafawa bignami disease possibly related to consumption of a locally brewed alcoholic beverage: Report of two cases.

Marchiafava Bignami disease is a rare toxic disease seen mostly in chronic alcoholics, resulting in progressive demyelination and necrosis of the corpus callosum. Initially it was thought to be specific to individuals in central Italy, consuming large amounts of Chianti red wine; however, alcoholic beverages worldwide are presently implicated. In our case series of two cases, locally made "illicit" liquor (Mahuwa Alcohol) could be the causative factor. In radiological point of view typically the corpus callosum is affected, with involvement of the body, genu, and splenium in order of occurrenc

[Determination of methanol and fusel oils in alcohol beverages using headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography].

A method for the determination of methanol and fusel oils in alcohol beverages using headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography (HS-SPME-GC) is presented. The solid phase was a coated epoxy resin. The extraction and chromatography conditions were optimized. Limits of detection were 0.02 mg/L-0.04 mg/L and relative standard deviations were in the range of 1.4%-4.1%. The proposed method showed better sensitivity in comparing with direct headspace gas chromatography(HS-GC, the National Standard method). This method was applied to evaluate real samples. The spiked recoveries in b

Evaluating new simplified assays for harm reduction from methanol poisoning using chromotropic acid kits: An analytical study on Indian and Iranian alcoholic beverages.

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of methanol can result in severe irreversible morbidity, and death. Simple and easy methods to detect methanol and other hazardous additives prior to consumption can prevent fatalities. This form of harm reduction is analogous to the widely practiced "pill testing" of recreational drugs in various countries. We aimed to evaluate the performance of two qualitative and quantitative kits to simultaneously identify the presence of methanol and formaldehyde in alcoholic beverages, and compare this to the standard gas chromatographic (GC) method. METHODS: Two-hundred samples o

Production and characterization of distilled alcoholic beverages obtained by solid-state fermentation of black mulberry (Morus nigra L.) and black currant (Ribes nigrum L.).

The present study was conducted to appraise the potential of black mulberry and black currant to be used as fermentation substrates for producing alcoholic beverages obtained by distillation of the fruits previously fermented with Sacchromyces cerevisiae IFI83. In the two distillates obtained, the volatile compounds that can pose health hazards are within the limits of acceptability fixed by the European Council (Regulation 110/2008) for fruit spirits. However, the amount of volatile substances in the black currant distillate (121.1 g/hL absolute alcohol (aa)) was lower than the minimum limit

Effects of ethanol and various alcoholic beverages on the formation of O6-methyldeoxyguanosine from concurrently administered N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine in rats: a dose-response study.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages has been identified as a major cause of oesophageal cancer in industrialized countries, with an exceptionally high risk associated with apple-based liquors (calvados). In the present study, we have determined the dose--activity relationship of the effects of coincident ethanol on the formation of O6-methyldeoxyguanosine (O6-MEdG) by the oesophageal carcinogen N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine (NMBzA). Male Fischer 344 rats received a single intragastric dose of NMBzA (2.5 mg/kg body wt; 7.4 ml/kg body wt) in tap water containing 0-20% ethanol (v/v). Survival time wa

'Nothing can be done until everything is done': the use of complexity arguments by food, beverage, alcohol and gambling industries.

BACKGROUND: Corporations use a range of strategies to dispute their role in causing public health harms and to limit the scope of effective public health interventions. This is well documented in relation to the activities of the tobacco industry, but research on other industries is less well developed. We therefore analysed public statements and documents from four unhealthy commodity industries to investigate whether and how they used arguments about complexity in this way. METHODS: We analysed alcohol, food, soda and gambling industry documents and websites and minutes of reports of releva

Targeting alcohol use in high-risk population groups: a US microsimulation study of beverage-specific pricing policies.

BACKGROUND: Raising retail prices on alcoholic beverages preferred by high-risk groups (males, those of low socioeconomic status, and those with heavy alcohol use) might selectively reduce their alcohol consumption. However, the differential impact of beverage-specific price increases on US population groups has yet to be studied. This study aimed to simulate the effect of beverage-specific price increases on alcohol use within subgroups of the adult US population defined by sex, educational attainment, and alcohol use category. METHODS: An individual-level microsimulation of the US populatio
